Just want to say thanks a ton for this video series. I've been looking at building a custom camper using 80/20 essentially like you have,. I really appreciate all of the amazing detail you go through in the process. Thanks!!

Dang, this is the best looking home build camper...BY FAR. It looks downright professionally designed and made. Also, I suspect with the proven 80/20 frame, it's amongst the best with regards to strength and durability vs weight vs the other home builds and the modular flexibility offered by building with 80/20 can't be matched. Really really nice work !

Too bad, you could have used the holes in the aluminium to run screws into a piece of wood so make it easy to hang on to the aluminium just my thoughts

First of all, anyone tell you, you look like Chuck Norris? I bought this table myself but my saw is corded. Along time ago I started with Makita but I didn't have good luck with their batteries. Then my wife ordered me Milwaukee, well they never showed up and I waited along time, so i bought Dewalt because Lowe's was running a big sale on them. I'm still with Dewalt, not all of my batteries say Dewalt but they are compatability is right on and cheaper. Everyone i know oh how great Milwaukee is, maybe. I also have adapters to run Dewalt batteries on other brands. I have an old 18 volt jig saw that I use 20 volt batteries with and it's been running great.

Don’t necessarily figure it out yourself. Space concerns have been worked out dozens of times by companies. They should be able to show you a 90% complete what is possible idea. Not that you can’t vary things but it may allow you to experience things….

LOVE, LOVE 80/20! I'm it's biggest promoter. However, it's WAY too heavy for a camper. Looks great but off-road that mass will be scary.

@buffalo4127
@buffalo4127 Год назад
Thank you. I saw DuelEx and he is terrific! I am utilizing shaped pieces of diamond plate AL for strength and modular assembly. I liked your method for its assembly/disassembly aspect…as one perfects the size and shape, it can be easily altered…. However all proof is in the pudding and i must get it completed on the Jeep Gladiator (-;

Check out youtuber ripcord @RipcordHQ. He has a little shorty rack sherpaec.com/products/animas . I think that might be the way to go if it will fit. The camper articulates separately from the cab so there still needs to be a gap between them while driving but can attach them at night for support

Nice work. I'm thinking of doing the same. Are you concerned about the hardware loosening up? Did you use any kind of thread locker on the bolts?
@CampProjectCom
@CampProjectCom Год назад
No thread locker yet. Still prototyping and taking things apart. Not tool worried about things loosening up. Mainly I forgot to tighten a few. With the redundancy of multiple bolts for each piece I haven't had a problem even if I forget to tighten something.

I'm curious why you chose to connect the 8020 with plates as opposed to double anchor fasteners? Would love to hear your opinion and pros and cons. I've never actually used any of the products. Thanks again for your wealth of knowledge and sharing your experience.
@CampProjectCom
@CampProjectCom Год назад
The original plan was to not use 8020 at all. Plates welded to posts. I am still planning to make posts without 8020 so by building the way they are built I can just swap them out.

I dont need a big ol popup. But, its inspired me to build my own. Ive only recently found out what 8020 actually is...but it looks so useful! Thank you so much! :)

Take the whole setup to the landfill and drive over their scale. Get your weight. Then weigh again without it. Or vice versa. Truck stops and scrap yards will also have scales but will cost a little bit to weigh.

Let me start off by saying that I really appreciate the time, effort and energy you are putting into these videos. You have actually given me a couple of things to consider about my build. But, I totally understand explaining ideas and philosophy. But 7 videos (70+ minutes) to finally get to installing the first piece. Right now I am 1 minute and 29 seconds into this video... I can only wonder how long it will take you to get to attaching the upright pieces. Like I said, I really do appreciate it! Cheers

Troy, we wondered if you hinged the roof to 7-12 pitch from side to side then creat a like hinging section of roof on the opposite side? Next up would be triangular folding end sections….forming the front and back closures thus creating a gable roof configuration…. Just wondering (-; Sorry abt the saw…

CP, how’s it going? I have several question? Have you created a schematic for material + dimensions? I am doing the same for Jeep Gladiator and want to avoid endless resizing…etc.
@CampProjectCom
@CampProjectCom Год назад
I think the Gladiator is probably the perfect vehicle for a popup camper. The one thing I miss with the Tacoma is the passthrough from the cab. I am still tweaking things so no schematic or cut list yet. Also the cabover doesn't have support yet. I am still sleeping on the lower deck but hopefully this summer I will get the popup and support finished.
@buffalo4127
@buffalo4127 Год назад
You bring out just the option i am working on that is, the pass through to cab. Marrying the camper to the cab is the challenge. I have decided to combine diamond plate aluminum with the 8020. Any observation on using diamond plate? Btw your camper looks terrific.

Thank you for all of the efforts and great videos. I wonder if there is a way to directly attach the front of the topper to the top of the cab? Not sure if that is good or not given the flex of the truck frame.

Finally found some 80/20. $359 for 1.5x3 12 ft long plus shipping. I'll just buy a used camper. I'm all about diy but by the time I get all the aluminum I need I'll be into it about 2500

That is crazy expensive, and probably heavy too. That is one of the reasons I went with the 1x2 inch. Still have a lot of challenges going with something smaller lighter (and cheaper) t-slot.

Nice vids. I know your frustration that a retail market for honeycomb panels does not seem to have developed, yet. I wonder if there are tech minded watchers of this channel who could help in the development of a new kind of 'buyer's cooperative' that can organize purchases of a truckload of honeycomb panels to be delivered to a major city at a specified weekend, so that a number of makers can get together and save on shipping (and not have markups).
@CampProjectCom
@CampProjectCom Год назад
There was a discussion with a small group of people about selling kits (prefab and custom). That way we could buy bulk. We would have to have some type of facility. We will have to wait and see how serious everyone was. Might have been the beers talking.
@harryniedecken5321
@harryniedecken5321 Месяц назад
There are companies that build honeycomb panels in a variety of materials. They have in house cnc capability and really can cut anything that you need. There are also foam core panels as well that are quite strong. You can diy as well using for instance hardware store foam and marine plywood.

will water get in between the tail gate and the back door? or is there a seal of some kind? love the multiple windows
@CampProjectCom

Water and snow are getting between the tailgate and back door. For the most part it keeps the water out but I need to seal it up still. Going to work on that later. The rain backdraft when driving is a bigger issue than I thought.

I tried to contact via your website, said I was a Spam Bot and didn't send the message. I'm working on a similar type design, but I am utilizing a program that you can build a cut list and design loads into it. It's free and seems to work out well. I still have some tweaking on my design but I would like to discuss it further with you. Cheers.
