Derren Brown has a really interesting act, but it disappoints me that people use it to support pseudoscience. If you think of the most reasonable explanation, it is that Simon actually did write that he wanted a BMX. This explains his confusion upon opening the note. The trick was managing to replace the note in what seemed to be Simon's handwriting. The "explanation" at the end is just further misdirection of the audience.

It's also important to realize that Derren Brown is very aware of what NLP is. He may use this to his advantage when coming up with his "explanations" and his performing of certain actions. With mentalists, you have to remember that there's a lot of work put in to fool YOU as well as the subjects. Look up "dual reality" tricks, they are an exemplar of this.

Mind Control with Derren Brown (2007) The show was a mix of new segments filmed in the US and older clips shown in earlier UK TV shows. How to pick up beautiful women is in the first episode of this US series, but the clip is likely from the British version of Mind Control. The oldest version of this clip on RU-vid is 16 years ago in 2022, which predates the airing in America

I first saw this video shortly after it was posted. Think about that. 12 years ago. Why did I keep returning? Well, obviously Derren is amazing. But, I kept returning to check if someone could tell me what the beautiful intro song is titled. Twelve long years. Over and over. Trying to find the title to a song that reminds me of how you feel when you first see something beautiful. Well, I have good news...I finally found the name. "Ennio Morricone - La donna gattina - Come Imparai Ad Amare Le Donne (1967)"

Clever magician. But the slight-of-hand occurred off-stage I'm sure (as a Quora member pointed out), when the BMX bike written on Simon's note was lifted to find out what he really wanted, and simply exchanged for something written in similar writing that he didn't. He's playing the audience and Simon by making us think that nlp is the cause. It isn't. But really, as magicians use misdirection--He's doing the same with here by making us believe it's nlp.

Some time ago, I was so impressed by this video that I once recommended it to a practicing NLP hypnotist. He was not impressed and waved me off in disgust. I can't recall what the hypnotist said was specifically wrong with it, because I was embarrassed and disappointed in his judgment and was not paying attention. Or, perhaps I was hypnotized into not remembering what he said was wrong with it. The only thing I remember from the conversation was, "Of *course* he chose the BMX bike!"

Look, about the touching: first he interrupts the handshake, which is a sort of short circuit to suggestibility---the brain has the action of handshake as a preprogrammed sequence, so if you interrupt it, the brain is temporarily floundering for instruction, and quickly seizes upon what's given in that moment of cognitive hiccup. Then he asks Pegg to reminisce and really focus on the positive, satisfactory feelings of acquiring something one really wants and (in addition to various mirroring activities) he first taps the elbow... so Pegg will associate that deeply positive feeling with the tap. Then he anchors each of the subliminal BMX bike keywords, via tapping again, back to the positive feeling as a sort of feedback loop. Re: Pegg is an actor -- there are dozens, hundreds of clips online of Brown and other mentalists/etc. employing various suggestion/hypnotism techniques on strangers, not stooges. There are TED Talks and scientific analyses of these methods; there are stage performances and spontaneous actions on the street (and nowadays, there are often breakdowns provided after to explain how it works). I grant you that some might be setups, but not all. If you don't believe in the possibility of this, then the entire area of psychology must be called into question---PTSD, childhood trauma, addiction, et cetera. If external stimuli can work on the mind, then the possibility for this also remains. What I'm curious about is if his methods work with other-than-average brains---sociopaths or people with Aspergers, for instance, for whom I would imagine pattern interruption would be harder, as rote social mannerisms like the handshake are not so subconscious?

it's all about how easy is for a person to access their subconcious; I was working with, or rather, for a NLP Coach, and I'm quite acquainted to such techniques and practices, plus I've always love mind stuff and psychology, neurosciences, philosophy, linguistics (actually my major), esoterism and such kind of things. From my own experiences, practices and research, I came to the conclusion that it is all related somehow, it's all about the mind... Through a more "scientific" perspective we can say that this kind of brains are atypical and its all about neurotransmitters and how they interact be it over or under that makes them change their cognitive patterns or is it the other way around? My point is, yes and no... You can make it work if you know how their cognitive patterns work and how do they (the people with this kind of brains) relate to reality. I think I'm the closest you can get to answer this question for I have also being diagnosed with such differences regarding cognitive patterns and neurotransmitters' interactions... namely, I actually present a comorbidity in this kind of disorders I would rather not discuss here, I had been quite disfunctional all my life, bordering in autistic kind of behaviour -although I cannot discard it just yet- but I outgrew it and became average functional tho my differences are still there... When I worked with this Coach he tried to "heal me" but it all backfired on him because he actually messed with my already stranious mind and he was actually trying to make me do his biddings. People like myself can access subconcious mind easier than typical brains (it's been found taht people with ADHD have more thetawaves) and it's all about how our minds had to relate to reality it's just that we do not know it consciously; in layman terms some people with mental and personality disorders actually hypnotise themselves. No, you cannot really do it unless they want to. They are the only ones that can "heal" themselves, I know it cause I learnt how to through that harsh experience...

I wouldn't feel comfortable with a guy who keep laying his hands on me. It's like he is trying to get into my personal space and act like my friend. Moreover if this guy is really that good. He wouldn't be sitting here selling NLP techniques. Politicians would hire him. Wall street bank/investment would be all over him stuffing tens of millions into his pocket before he start working with them. There is no evidence that this is NLP is probably a show to convince people otherwise. The so-called NLP is probably sale techniques or body reading language which has been there way beforehand.
@Octopussyist
@Octopussyist 9 лет назад
First he is NOT selling NLP. He is not even claiming it is NLP what he is doing. Second, if you go to his own channel you'll find that this clip is not even posted there, and third, yes he is that good, some may even be better, but he is so good at making shows out of these techniques that the BBC is probably paying him even more than any political party would.

off-kilter That discomfort works in his favor. While your consciousness is distracted by wondering why this guy has his hands on you and feeling uncomfortable, conflicted and trying to decide what to do about it, he's whispering 'BMX bike' to your subconscious.

That's not correct, there is no hypnosis involved. You are seeing showmanship, and misdirection when he makes a show of trying to "mind read". In reality, this is probably nothing more than some practiced hot reading. He is at a party, and has his assistants circulate around, amongst a group of many models, and he is using information gained by them. Keep in mind he selected three models from a group of many.

Yeah I would have to agree with Kingsley Zissou on this one... Showmanship, misdirection, hot reading (he could have easily gathered information, he is very tricky) may have knew who these girls were or could have googled them before hand, or had someone do it, and he was using cold reading techniques too.. like Barnum statements that specifically apply to women... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnum_effect I bet you he's done this a ton of times and failed... that night and on many other occasions.... He only shows the ones he gets right. He did this one trick where he flipped a coin and got heads... 10 times in row without the camera cutting away... hahaha but how is that possible??? What you don't see and he explains later, is... he sat there and flipped a coin for 9 hours, to get one continuous shot. LOL ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XzYLHOX50Bc.html It's just that simple sometimes. The law of averages plays out through Barnum statements and using cold reading and hot reading seems to be the key.
@rcchristian2
@rcchristian2 6 лет назад
Kinglsey: Yeah too true !! The last girl it didn't really work on ... she says it didn't really work at the end, she just liked it ... lol He is using Barnum statements in cold reading, things that apply to all people and definitely influenced her.
