Look, about the touching: first he interrupts the handshake, which is a sort of short circuit to suggestibility---the brain has the action of handshake as a preprogrammed sequence, so if you interrupt it, the brain is temporarily floundering for instruction, and quickly seizes upon what's given in that moment of cognitive hiccup. Then he asks Pegg to reminisce and really focus on the positive, satisfactory feelings of acquiring something one really wants and (in addition to various mirroring activities) he first taps the elbow... so Pegg will associate that deeply positive feeling with the tap. Then he anchors each of the subliminal BMX bike keywords, via tapping again, back to the positive feeling as a sort of feedback loop. Re: Pegg is an actor -- there are dozens, hundreds of clips online of Brown and other mentalists/etc. employing various suggestion/hypnotism techniques on strangers, not stooges. There are TED Talks and scientific analyses of these methods; there are stage performances and spontaneous actions on the street (and nowadays, there are often breakdowns provided after to explain how it works). I grant you that some might be setups, but not all. If you don't believe in the possibility of this, then the entire area of psychology must be called into question---PTSD, childhood trauma, addiction, et cetera. If external stimuli can work on the mind, then the possibility for this also remains. What I'm curious about is if his methods work with other-than-average brains---sociopaths or people with Aspergers, for instance, for whom I would imagine pattern interruption would be harder, as rote social mannerisms like the handshake are not so subconscious?
What's my name? Oh, no he didn't! Waht's my nmae? That's some powerful stuff there Maynard. My name, what is it? Can you spell my _Last_ name? Nice to meet you, hope you have a most pleasant day. And my name is..
it's all about how easy is for a person to access their subconcious; I was working with, or rather, for a NLP Coach, and I'm quite acquainted to such techniques and practices, plus I've always love mind stuff and psychology, neurosciences, philosophy, linguistics (actually my major), esoterism and such kind of things. From my own experiences, practices and research, I came to the conclusion that it is all related somehow, it's all about the mind... Through a more "scientific" perspective we can say that this kind of brains are atypical and its all about neurotransmitters and how they interact be it over or under that makes them change their cognitive patterns or is it the other way around? My point is, yes and no... You can make it work if you know how their cognitive patterns work and how do they (the people with this kind of brains) relate to reality. I think I'm the closest you can get to answer this question for I have also being diagnosed with such differences regarding cognitive patterns and neurotransmitters' interactions... namely, I actually present a comorbidity in this kind of disorders I would rather not discuss here, I had been quite disfunctional all my life, bordering in autistic kind of behaviour -although I cannot discard it just yet- but I outgrew it and became average functional tho my differences are still there... When I worked with this Coach he tried to "heal me" but it all backfired on him because he actually messed with my already stranious mind and he was actually trying to make me do his biddings. People like myself can access subconcious mind easier than typical brains (it's been found taht people with ADHD have more thetawaves) and it's all about how our minds had to relate to reality it's just that we do not know it consciously; in layman terms some people with mental and personality disorders actually hypnotise themselves. No, you cannot really do it unless they want to. They are the only ones that can "heal" themselves, I know it cause I learnt how to through that harsh experience...
He matches and mirrors Pegg's gestures to build instant hypnotic rapport, and every time Brown says a word that relates to bicycles, he anchors that word to a tap on Pegg's left shoulder. When he finally asks about his dream gift, Brown holds his hand on that shoulder. It's called "anchoring" in NLP. He also uses a Pattern Interrupt Handshake Induction to put Pegg into a deep hypnotic state. Brown is doing a thousand things at once, and I promise--he finds the world fascinating, not boring.
Clever magician. But the slight-of-hand occurred off-stage I'm sure (as a Quora member pointed out), when the BMX bike written on Simon's note was lifted to find out what he really wanted, and simply exchanged for something written in similar writing that he didn't. He's playing the audience and Simon by making us think that nlp is the cause. It isn't. But really, as magicians use misdirection--He's doing the same with here by making us believe it's nlp.
Because he switched the paper out with something that read "leather jacket", read the word "BMX bike" bought the bike, and left Pegg with the leather jacket.
Honestly doesn't seem real to me. I can't imagine how this could ever work on anyone. Even if you get that item in your head for a minute, it makes no sense at all to lose your memory if what you actually wrote down. That's why this looks fake.
+12brichards Your laying down a series of Anchors and if look look closely you see there is hand gesture to carry that Anchor. In order for this to work first you need to put them into a state of confusion ;). Welcome to the world of nlp
yeah this is all bullshit. that explanation isnt worth 2 cents. whats impressive here isnt the "trick" (or lack there of) but the way he convinces people to believe his pseudoscience pop psychology reasoning behind it . in that way he is way ahead of the game
and now i'm 3 weeks into this stuff...I've got ALL of derren brown's material, his shows, his books, his audio books, his shows, his tv specials...everything! lol he's far greater than i imagined. yeah you're right it's not NLP that he's using..it's a fusion of "magic, psychology, misdirection and showmanship" like he says it.
I like the subtle visual clues as well, particularly the visible audio recording equipment which appears as two circles going round and round in the background behind derren.
this video is amazing. Derren Brown uses NLP Anchoring in this and he does it so well! I love how he incorporated telling Simon how he gets people to like what he gets them into his little scheme of things. He is a very excellent hypnotist and illusionist of the mind.
Uprated, favorited and widely shared. I allowed a tout recently in Turkey to persuade me to take a manicure and pedicure. I was aware of what she was doing by touching my headscarf and talking to me. In fact, they were the best manicure and pedicure I have ever had, and I really needed them. The two operators were well tipped. A tout in a jewelry business also touched me to engage me. I did not buy. You can resist this stuff if you really want to, but it is easy to be persuaded.
For all of you who are looking for the song. I heard it a long time ago. I believe it's called Different Time by Victor Malloy. Almost impossible to find it on the internet.
This kind of reminds me the of the NLP techniques i am going over with a friend of mine, Doc Barham. A Los Angeles Life Coach, also known as Coach Hollywood. This stuff is MAGIC!
when Derren shakes his hand the first time, he interrupts the handshake and takes the control throwing the "victim" into hypnosis instantly -- which makes him (victim) very suggestible. When derren asks him to describe the feeling of desire/certainty, he touches his arm anchoring (creating an association) between the feeling of desire for an object with derren's touch. whenever derren touches him, he feels that he REALLY wants whatever he has in mind, in this case the BMX bike. brilliant
I really like how Derren shows how he did things in the end. Imagine how this powerful technique - hypnotic (or "embedded") suggestion can be in therapeutic settings. I have added this to the video page at all-about-nlp
At first i thought it was only the hidden commands and the influential environment. But when i check out 1:25 he does the handshake interrupt. Some form of hypnotic induction. Genius.
To those not getting how this works, look closely at the video. When he asks him to think of the feeling of finding something he really wants, he taps his arm with his hand. Then, watch closely how whenever he taps him on the arm again he says something that points towards the BMX bike. It's much more complicated than just that, but many commenters seem to not see when he "suggests" the present.
Derren Brown is one hell of a guy =) If you repeat all his clips over and over again you'll see how he do it. It's amazing. Love to play stone, paper and sissor with friends, after Derrens trick tip it's alot easier to control their moves, thou it won't work when you or your friends are drunk! lost a few cans...
Listen carefully Dont get over excited, theres a big box behind you--- Of course he looks When you what is feels like - feel describe it Take that feeling and amplify it ----Touches him again creates anchor Hand shake trance induction- confuses him into trance Talks to him suggestion what may happen touches him on Bm , X -box , Wanted , says Bike creating instead of by creating Shows him, he gets emotional u got all RED - EXCELLENT NLP WORK DERREN!
still worth a few shots. as long as i try it abouch and learn more technecks and nlp stuff, it might work some day. but yes he is an expert i saw his tv seris a few years ago when it came out.
derren brown used the words that relate to the complete word of the BMXbike... notice how he taps the spectator whenever he tells something that sounds like A BMX BIKE...
