When he said dog...win" she associated those words with the memory she forgot. In other words she now remembers looking at a winning ticket without ever actually looking again to confirm it.
The whole part at the beginning where the man looked in her eyes was to make the memory of the losing ticket "soft" in her memory so that it could be easily forgotten. With all the confusion of a direct eye contact from a complete stranger and the distraction of the hand slap, her memory was substituted for a winning ticket by all the associations.
Remember the hidden commercials they used to play during movies in the cinemas? It's the same thing. Your brain picks up on tiny bits of information unconciously. It's not fake, it's a trick. And man, do I wish I could do these kind of tricks!
Right! The first visit to the ticket booth Derren has swopped the losing ticket for a winner, no window slapping, no questions, just a quick payout. Once you realise that Derren has decieved YOU - the viewer - the rest is cast in doubt. Why do YOU trust him? That's the real issue.
It is a pattern interuption, on the commentary Derren says that because the staff are used to been givin winning tickets, when they get a losing one, it confuses them and the brain looks for a way out. So it takes Derren's command.
@Edsthuri If you noticed in both examples, the winning dog was in the number 4 track, hence "This is the dog youre looking 4" Also, "this is why we came to this WIN dow."

Basic psychology, but a lot of things are going on. Start with the power of suggestion and confidence. Then add confusion and misdirection to focus on words and actions instead of the ticket. This is all compounded by environment. It's loud, fast-paced, hundreds of people approach the windows, and workers are used to only winning tickets coming back. Furthermore, people are more apt to give money to avoid confrontation than argue the point.
"This is the ONE you're looking FOR." Notice that one was their ticket, four was the winning one. When he smacked the wall, he surprised her, and left her open to suggestion for a few seconds... I think.
I read his book (Tricks of the mind). He writes that he has never worked with actors. I believe that because he explains the basic functionality of those tricks. I can really recommand this book, although I've not finished it yet.
Its hypnosis and stuff. Also, if you noticed on the second window he said "That is why we came to this WINdow". He emphasised win so he was messing with her mind to make her think the guy one. This guy is a master at stuff like that.

He says WINdow with emphasis on the WIN and this is the dog you're looking for. Brown tells the the guy say this is the winning ticket, to the lady, and subconciously the lady thinks it is.
Don't you guys get it? Brown says all the time that he employs suggestion and deceit in all of his tricks. So why wouldn't this concept be applied to the entire show? It's the best trick of all!
He slapped the window to get her attention/distract her, then he said "this is the dog you're looking for. This is the right WINdow". The slap caught her off guard and since she had already looked at the number she forgot what it was when he distracted her.

Reply pt1 - Its known as the Erickson handshake. Basically, a predictable action is interrupted such as a normal handshake. When u stick out ur hand, the other person sticks it out in return. If you interrupt this sequence, the mind goes in2 a st8 of interruption that lasts only a few parts of a second.
Man those embedded commands are intense. if i had a convo with him i wouldn't trust him for jack. I'd be more like: "Okay okay, i get it...now teach me this shit"
What I dont understand is when the cashiers scan the ticket the second time, how the hell do they come up with a figure to pay out? The ticket is still a loser and should still scan as a loser...?
Simple - the cashier is looking for a certain number. When Derren says "This is the dog you're looking for" its likely that he's also subliminally influening the cashier - so somehow making an indication towards the number of the dog on the ticket - maybe in his left hand, he's holding up one. Some sort of clue.
He pattern breaks them. The ladies have a tedious job of repitition and he slaps the window pattern breaking them and then implanting "This is the dog you're looking for" with an emphasis on "for". Dog #4 is the winning dog so "for" is the emphasis. Also says "That's why we came to this WINdow." emphasis on Win. The pattern break and the two winning subliminal messages set the stage.
Have you noticed it was "predictable" because there was a 001 on the box? That means that you were actually subliminally trained to think it was going to stop at one second as well. Go back to the vid, look closely in the corner of the box. There is a sticker. It says 0.01. :)
Hang on Perqa, I misunderstood what you meant about 'without Derren's assistance'. If you mean 'why did the ticket come up as a loser the first time it was scanned, but came up a winner the second time it was scanned?' I can tell you. The ticket has a barcode at each end. One end has the real losing barcode, the other end has the winning barcode Derren put on it. The first time she scanned the losing end, the second time she scanned to winning end.
He's using NLP. He has convinced the guy that his winning ticket is USELESS. He's anchored that word. The guy throws his winning ticket on the ground believing it's USELESS. Derren picks up the winning ticket and takes it to the window. That's how the first trick is done. Still working on how the second one is accomplished.
This is just one big mind trick Derren is playing on the entire viewing audience. We believe what is happening in his shows because he tells us to believe it.
Why did that guy say only 10 quid and 20 quid?? After the first time acknowleding it worked i would of been like "hmmmmm i think ill put my house on it".
A few years ago (when I still smoked ;) I bought a packet of twenty at the supermarket. I looked away for absent mindedly for a second and then turned back and said to the cashier 'so can I have my cigarettes'. She went and got a pack immediately and gave them to me without a word. Outside, I found I had two packs. I hadn't noticed I'd picked them up so I was completely certain she hadn't given them to me. Thus, so was she. No intimidation, just certainty. I guess if you can fake that...

Those who fail to understand just don't get it because there's a sucker born every minute and you're him. Darren bangs on the side of the window creating a pattern break, confusing the lady. Then he follows in a commanding voice : THIS IS THE DOG YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. And four is the number of the winning ticket. Derren then says THAT'S WHY WE CAME TO THIS WINDOW. Subliminally telling her with the last two words of both sentences... four, win. She then pays out despite the ticket number being one
Yea man, i always thought that was something to do with it from back when i first seen it on telly. He obviously does it for a reason. And like the other guy has said here, he says WINdow with the WIN part louder. Its probably a combination of things. I tried this at the pub one night when i was drunk - i got kicked out just lol
none of the people in his shows are actors otherwise what would be the point? he's just a very talented psycho-magician who has honed his skills to perfection. if you think it's fake, go and see his shows for yourself. he's just a great showman.
Its not really people with weak minds, but people with what's called high affiliation needs. He gives them behavioral and linguistic cues that let them know unconsciously that he likes them, that's he's an authority figure and then some of them, not all, act to continue the affiliation they have established with him. We do this all the time, to a greater or lessor degree to one another.
