Best in 9mm with a 2.25" barrel as the .357 Mag round (and .327 Fed Mag) is little if any better than 9mm with that barrel length but has a lot more muzzle flash and blast. It needs a 3" barrel. Not sure why you'd use an airweight J-Frame over an airweight LCR or LCRx as they don't have the issues the J-Frames have.
I HAVE THE SW 360PD.....I NEVER FIRE 357 OUT OF IT AND VERY FEW +P'S.....I FIRE HORNATY 90GR. LITES IN IT, OR HORNATY FULL WADCUTTERS 150GR, 1100FPS AND THEY HANDLE THESE ROUNDS EASILY, THEY ARE REDUCED RECOIL AND ARE NOT + P'S,,,I DO HAVE HOGUE LARGE GRIPS ON MY WEAPON....THIS SET UP IS EASILY HANDLED AND VERY ACCURATE....GOOD LUCK, THE 360 IS A GREat gun 11.4 oz. empty....i also have the sw 640-1, wt is 22.4oz again with the large hogue grips and this weapon handles all 38 and 357 loads with no issue, it has a 2.25 inch barrel, all stainless steel.
I’m quite a bit younger but still grew up hunting, shooting clay and just generally using guns with iron sights. Even once I enlisted I was taking the optics off of my M4 to use irons for years. I just started using the ACOG and CCO in the last three and it has definitely been a game changer. I was also convinced that the irons worked well enough for me and still think too many guys nowadays don’t practice with them enough but I’m glad to now have more options.
I’ve tried a couple of different hand guards on my Mini 30, including one that similar to the one you showed in the video. I didn’t like it because it barely had any ventilation for the barrel. I now have an aftermarket guard and a separate gas system that adjustable, and I’m happy with it. But those bolts have to be tightened evenly using a torque wrench. I don’t know if that’s part of your issue, but I learned to be more careful about aftermarket parts too.
AWESOME INFO!!! Thanks for taking time to share this... The fact that you did speaks volumes IMO because this will Probably not be a "High Volume" video monetarily 4 you but I REALLY APPRECIATE it!!! That's called "GUN COMMUNITY INTEGRITY" PEOPLE ... and COFFEE PEDDLERS
Help me understand… how is it that the sheared screw/bolt is stuck in the hole of the Ameega handguard? I have both Ultimak and Samson Mfg railed handguards and I don’t recall that their top holes for their screws/bolts are threaded. I do know that the gas block holes are threaded.
on the contrary of using anti-seize, they recommed you use thread locker! (at least Ultimak does) I get the idea; but, this is definitely something I worry about.
Seems like many people don't know this but Blue thread locker does keep the bolt tight but also keeps the bolt from seizing up completely so that it can be removed. Red thread locker is more for a permanent bolt that you do not ever intend to remove. I've never had a bolt completely seize up when I've used Blue thread lock. I would use the blue hi-temp thread locker in this case.
@@ranchmanager9126 i bought some blue but ended up not using it after this. how necessary do you think some type of thread locker is? the factory screws weren't thread locked. (that wasn't a rhetorical question, I'm fairly new to this)
Interesting. A 2.25" barrel seems great for 9mm, but for .357 Mag a 3" barrel seems ideal as a 4" barrel is too long for IWB carry around town, if ok for open carry in an OWB holster in rural environments.
I use my primary (right) to insert the mag. My mini just drops the mag when I hit the release. I then turn the gun and over with my support hand ( left) on the handguard while I retrieve the next mag with my right. Like you pointed out, it’s never gonna be as fast or smooth as an AR, but that’s why god invented back up.
We must be the same age. I had an Adam 12 lunch pail! LOL! I was never able to get my hands on a folding stock Mini-14 so I bought a Ranch Mini-14 in the 90's. I just recently discovered that they started producing them again this year, and just picked mine up today at my FFL Dealer! I am kind of having that adrenaline rush over it you were talking about! :)
I get very aggravated by videos like this one when you CAN"T SEE the accessory being explained because it installed on the rifle and ON A BL:ACK BACKGROUND! Therefore, I consider this video a waste of my time!
Today at the range I used 3 Ruger 30 round magazines with no issues at all, (brand new mini14 bought June 2024) however I had another Ruger 30 round magazine that did as you mentioned where rounds would just fall out, so I mailed the magazine back to Ruger and will get another in it's place. Back to today's 3 30 round Ruger mags, I was able to load it with Winchester target and practice ammo without any issues at all. About promag, there is not any instance that I can think of where I will ever own one. I had a promag for my AK that jammed 5 times at one time in a magazine loaded with 28 bullets and instead of shipping it back, I just threw it away.
Very nice review. I agree with you. I have a 642 S&W and it is light and small and easy to carry. But it is horrible to shoot. Even with 148 grain wadcutters…. I just hate shooting it and therefore don’t practice with it. But the SP101…. Bigger heavier but easy to shoot. I can pocket carry mine if I want to. I do admire the J frame and have 5 or 6 of them… but I sure would rather shoot the SP101… I have 3 of them.
you must be a fatty with baggy pants pockets, smile, full 148wadcutters are not a problem for the sw 642, if you find them to be, maybe you should not carry a gun.....here, carrry this rock and slingshot.....
A green Holosun dot sight on my Ruger PC has made a BIG difference with my 81 year old eyes. My left eye is OK, but it is difficult to see the front sight on pistols with my right eye. The solution for that is a Crimson Trace green laser and using my left eye to see the sights in bright sunlight. I probably just need to instal dot sights on some of my pistols.
Definitely don't feel unprepared with a mini14 around.. Would prefer to avoid the fights anyway should things get real! But I'm at least moderately prepared should things go south. Couple guns, bag packed with basic camping gear, med kit, food for at least a few days, ect..
Btw….these revolver videos of your are fantastic! I do have a question though. I find that when I get really high on the back strap of my L-frame, my trigger finger feels like it is pressing at a very awkward angle up. You mentioned that the trigger sweeps up by design, I believe, but do you think I am getting too high on the back strap? A tiny bit lower is comfortable for me but it visually looks like I’m giving up some space on the top of the backstrap.
Just got my first mini14.. didn’t come with any mags and I ordered a set of promag 10s. Would have done Ruger 20s but Colorado limits to 15rd and no one makes a 15. I did find ruger 20s that have been blocked off but have mixed feelings on them. I’ll see how my two promags do but will probably get a handful of ruger 10s as well
