Looks like a lovely day and meal :) Watching your videos all those years ago started me on my antique restoration road (thank you) I've just finished my first Boulle restoration and I'm glad to say it's perfect (gloat lol) I'm now starting a 1790/1800 Khatam fall front cabinet and I don't know what it's lacquered with, I've tried IPA and turps but it's not shifting at all, I need to strip off the old finish as it's almost black with dirt and discoloration, any help would be very welcome? TY

@purpleom9649
@purpleom9649 7 дней назад
@@theenglishpolisher Thank you for the help, I'm sure it will come in handy for other projects but as for the Khatam fall front cabinet I don't think it's right, Paramorse says it's not suitable for metals, I'm not entirely sure but it's either copper or gold in the inlay and maybe silver or pewter. I did try Winsor & Newton varnish remover this morning and it does work but it's so slow. I wish you were local, I would bring it in but I'm in Ramsgate in Kent :( . Looks like it's a long slow job but that might be a good thing as I don't want to damage the inlay (I'm not going to even try and replace that lol) Thanks again.

What a lovely glimpse into The English Polishers l(unch)/ife! Your RU-vid films during Lockdown were a lifeline. I’m a self taught gilder, and watching your techniques as a polisher gave me so many ideas. Just - “Just”!!! how to form a fad, so useful in gilding complex shapes to tamp down the leaf ….. Great to see you again! Christopher 😃👋

Hi Rob. How long do you need to let the shellac cure before the piece is ready for regular use?
@theenglishpolisher
@theenglishpolisher 2 месяца назад
Shellac is touch dry in two hours , hard in 24 and rick hard in about one week , I wait a week if it's a table or surface area , perhaps this pew about 48 before Id deliver back to a customer

@munseyslack9709 2 месяца назад
@@theenglishpolisher thank you for the response! That's just what I needed to know. I'm restoring a Duncan Phyfe style dining table and am concerned the shellac finish won't be durable enough for everyday use. I'll give it a couple weeks after the final polish and then rub it out with some dark wax. Hopefully that'll be enough. I'm hoping not to have to use varnish as a final coat as I love the look of hand rubbed shellac.

@@theenglishpolisher I put the last coat of polish on my dining table a couple of hours ago and want to rub it out with wire wool and wax as you did in your second video. There's quite a bit of mineral oil (white oil?) on the surface from the french polishing. Do I need to remove that before rubbing it out or just apply the dark wax and go from there? Also, is 24 hours enough time to wait before rubbing it out with wire wool and wax, or should I wait longer? Thanks in advance for the assistance!
