Им не махали,у него не достаточно длинны ,а значит не достаточный рычаг воздействия. То есть порезать можно, отрубить нельзя.Кроме того у тех мечей была плохая сталь,они не выдерживали удара клинок в клинок. Только к 15 столетия нашей эры металлургия смогла дать металл нужного для фехтования качества.Мечем и щитом легионер работал как гурман в ресторане столовыми приборами. Щитом прикрывался и наносил останавливающие удары, гладиусом наносил колющие удары или резал незащищённые участки тела противника.
