Hi G. Love the clip of Dorothy Ashby at 17:00 or so. Seems fresh .might look out for that ...funky harp sounds! Good to see you can get some of the older stuff easily from your local shop.
@@johnnyocvinylrecords1079 hi Ian yippee her three lps round that time are very upbeat. Yes I’m blessed having a wee record shop in town. Would have to go in to Edinburgh.
Cant even describe how mindblowing this album is, tune in 5 reprise is my favorite track from this. gingerbread boy in 1966, and you wont find a better version of straight no chaser or au leu cha. Ive listened to this entire album ( on apple music) from beginning to end on multiple occasions when i was delivering all day for amazon. best days of my life. miles in concert at the philharmonic 1973 i think is one of my favorite electric miles era albums.
George those are just so tempting in vinyl. I just don’t understand why they are pushing them out so fast. What not space them out? I get Xmas is coming and it becomes box set season but one or two a year would sell more I would think.
Great stuff George. I've been getting my jazz head back on so have been listening to Miles again. The only two Doors albums I really like are the first one and LA Woman. Got a nice Rhino reissue from a few years ago.
@@Markymarkvinylnut hi mark I’ve been an audiophile for many years. And seemed out special pressings normally only available through hifi mags back in the day. Now everyone is aware of them. Which is good I suppose. What comes out now is overwhelming.
I've had the same problem with the hole being too small for the spindle. That is absurd. Recently I have changed my thinking on that - I think the hole is big enough but sometimes the label on one side or the other is not perfectly centered and so a piece of the label is blocking the hole. Just a thought. It's probably a mix of the two issues. Should never happen. L.A. Woman looks awesome. Miles Ahead - my favorite of the orchestrated Miles records. Except for maybe the soundtrack for the French film (Elevator...). Rendell/Carr record looks great - same for Wayne Shorter and....well, the whole stack looks awesome. I'd like to hear Thembi - I'm a big Karma fan. Thanks for showing the records!
@@RandallWeaver thanks Randy. They sell a reamer to drill the hole out. Not buying that stuff. Great box the doors but expensive. Always glad to pick up miles lps just a wee bit noisy original though. Wayne shorter fab though.
George, I have never seen that green colored Miles album, that has me intrigued. You mentioned this is from an audiophile series? That one really caught my attention.
Hi Steve the miles lp is a normal prestige release from 57 I think just before his four lp relaxing steaming cooking and working. This is an ojc reissue from last month.
Hi George, great video as always. Do order you direct from AP? If so do theshipping company charge the taxes to UK as they don’t seem to add at source from AP.
Hi I normally buy direct one for a low number but I get it quicker than dealers here. And it’s generally slightly cheaper. Fed ex normally bill me directly. Sometimes don’t get charged especially from vmp. Try the in groove
I did not know that Juju and Lee's "Gigolo" were reissued until now. I was contemplating the Doors release being a longtime Doors collector. I am not into the box set/large album jackets. I did buy the Hendrix and I grabbed the UHQR pressings of "Exodus" and "Rasta Vibration". But honestly George they are not that easy to store/shelve. If they came in regular size jackets like the Mofi pressings it would be so much better. I cannot understand why they release them in such huge packaging. What do you think about it? Rob/Boston
@@Paneeks1960 hi rob I should have said the new doors box is a bit smaller. No wood on the end. The blue note classic ls are generally a now brainer. Have a great Sunday rob.
@@praximan-ke8ek he Fontana label was created in the UK in 1958 by the Dutch electrical group Philips. It lasted until 1970, when it was replaced by the Vertigo label to compete in the prog-rock market against Decca’s Deram and EMI’s Harvest Records.
Fontana were licensed by Columbia/CBS to press their albums until around 1963. That's why you'll find Miles and Dave Brubeck on Fontana in the UK. Later pressings were Orange CBS. I just bought Milestones on Columbia six eye for under £7. Very happy
Curious as to what you might find lacking in a standard SME (period) tonearm. Also curious as to what made you choose for an expensive MM as apposed to a MC cartridge.
@@jamesgriffithsmusic yip think miles in the second quintet were more advanced. Tubby was a nice revelation. Thanks for the nudge in the right direction.
I dont like the new plinth…mostly due to it looking so bulky and the soft corner/curves imo add a bulky look…i have a 401 that has been in the family 50 years it too has a 250 arm but I have an Ittok I would like to use with it but think a skeletal type plinth is what I want A Bastin serviced 401 for 800£ sounds like a good deal.
@@naradaian that’s the beauty about these turntables you can put lots of different arms and plinths on them for different looks. Check out my other turntable it’s on my last video.
I was tempted by the Tubby vinyl box at the time but ended up getting the CD box instead as I was so new to the world of British jazz that £50 seemed enough. Looks nice full size
I have all those Miles Bootlegs on CD, great stuff. Don’t think I will jump to vinyl for them though. I have never heard of Tubby Hayes. Is he from the UK? Nice box set but I have never even seen an album by him.
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 hi Steve yes tubby is from England. Quite a player he was. Four miles box sets released in one day is a bit overpowering but will see.
Tubby was absolutely great and his recordings were very hard to come by , 30 yrs ago I can remember them for sale in London for £ 250 each ! Happy listening .😊
Excellent pickups George. I noticed that Blue Note has been reissuing the not so known albums by some of the jazz greats which is fantastic. Good to see the Ian Carr. I just bought a Japanese original "Belladonna" on Vertigo. I have the Nucleus "Elastic Rock" as well. But it is a 71 second pressing. The reissues from last year sound great. How did you like he Columbia pressing overall? ~ Rob/Boston
@@Paneeks1960 hi rob. Great finds for you. The Columbia records are real good sound excellent. These 2018 presses are getting a little thinner to find.
What did you do to make the post office so mad at you that they keep losing your record. Shade of Blue sounded quite interesting. I will have to see if it is available in the US. George, I still have not swung a golf club, pretty sad summer for me.
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 hi Steve. Playing was there second lp dusk fire. But any of there lps are good. Summer is nearly over better find a new local course and get swinging again.
@@Markymarkvinylnut hi mark. Two of my favourites. Maybe out there a bit but I like a wee challenge. That wall paper does my head in now. Have a great weekend.
Hi George - Nice finds. I've had a dodgy copy of Afro-Harping for years. Just seen that there's a two-disk reissue been announced. I pre-ordered mine from Sounds of the Universe. I think Dusk Fire is an amazing album. Cheers Dale
Hi yes I see that Afro harping is coming as a double will pick it up when released. Loving my rendell and carr. Will get them all. Another rabbit hole for the addiction
Another great stack of records George. Byrd/Gryce album looks great. Congratulations on completing the Andrew Hill collection. Alice Coltrane record and book looks incredible too. And Miles Davis! Thanks for showing the records George!
You are my VC jazz expert George. Most of my recent Jazz purchases have been because of you, thanks for spending my money. I do enjoy seeing and hearing about the UK jazz bands. I have never seen or heard of these albums which makes it very interesting. I have those Davis bootlegs on CD except Vol 7 which I also have on vinyl. Always great to see you my friend
My money is on you getting the Miles box sets 😂 I’ve had those Ian Carr/ Don Rendel on the want list for ages, maybe now is the time to spring into action. Great to see your update George cheers Graham
@@brandnewstart hi g. They are getting thin on the ground. If you go to jazz man site they still have two. Very cheap. Just managed to get one miles box. Old stock. Wee bit cheaper.
Afro-Harping is to be reissued by UMR and Verve Records on 27th of September. Double LP with 8 unreleased tracks. There’s to be a CD too. Mastered from 1/4 inch tapes. Not sure if the records are AAA but given they’ve got the tapes, you’d hope so. Might be worth picking up for those additional tracks. *edit to say - great to see your latest finds, a pleasure as always George.
Hey George, your Andrew Hill collection must be fairly large by now…good stuff. Your stereo setup looks mighty nice. 😊 Last year I bought the 5 Rendell/Carr LPs separately. I play them quite often. Yes, they knew what they were doing and very nice sound. Have a good day.
@@williamnow146 hi Bradley cheers for that. Just bought the other three. Not that easy to come by. Three from Europe. Two from main site. Yip Andrew hill now have all but one of his vinyl lps. Will wait on a reissue on blue note. System sounding sweet. Ta.
It was in March of 1979 (I was 23) that I saw Ultravox (with John Foxx and guitarist Robin Simon) in concert at the Whiskey A-Go-Go Nightclub in West Hollywood, California, (Island Records had dropped them so they financed that tour themselves here in the US), and I was in the middle of the stage. I held my right hand as high as I could and while John Foxx was singing, and he bended down and gave me a five with his left hand. The only song I remember that he sang was "Touch and Go" which it was never recorded on the 'Systems of Romance' album, but he recoded it on his first debut solo 1980 album 'Metamatic.' When I bought Ultravox's 1980 'Vienna' album, even though it is the best one with Midge Ure, I was disappointed that John Foxx was no longer with the group which he himself put together. What I found out some years ago, John Foxx quit and left Ultravox in late March of 1979 because there were creative differences between him and the group members, except with Robin Simon which he left shorty afterwards. In an interview with John Foxx he said "I just did not wanted to be with or in a gang anymore." referring to the remaining members of Ultravox. Sadly, bassist, keyboard musician and backup vocals Chris Cross passed away in March of 2024 at the young age of 71. He became a therapist counselor after Ultravox disbanded before returning to play concerts with Midge Ure, Billy Currie and Warren Cann a few years back.
