Bet it was lovely shunting the Routemasters, my current job now with these characterless new buses, I got in an RM for the first time the other day, just had a beaming smile on my face because I can see how great they’d have been to drive.
That’s not true about someone else designing a better one, as the FRM1 was not allowed to be built by stokes who ran British Leyland at the time. The FRM was a far better engineered bus than the Leyland Atlantean 😈
That’s the old AEC FACTORY at Windmill Lane Southall Middlesex, before it was closed down and demolished. I served an apprenticeship there in 1969. AEC was the Very Finest Engineered Commercial Vehicle’s in the World and would still exist today if for not being part of that comedy act …….British Leyland….. who couldn’t run a p**s up in a brewery😈

Great entertainment, but this was done every day at the London Transport Driver Training Centre at Chiswick. It was to give every Trainee Driver the "seat of the pants" feeling of what it was like to lose control, and how to correct the situation, and use "cadence braking" to stop the bus in a straight line It is not done anymore. The Dublin Bus Operator, CIE, had an identical training system. Well done to the lady, she will never forget that.

Also make it low floor up and down and also extend the middle body part of these vehicles a little bit more so there will be more space for the wheelchair users. SMK760F has had its repaint & Refurbishment of the Interior & Exterior into its 1968 London Transport Condition in its Red Livery with 1968 Adverts on the front & sides by Stagecoach London & Hants & Dorset Trim in Hampshire with the Interior Refurbished for London Bus Museum on a Five Year Loan from Stagecoach London
1982 was the year when Routemasters started being withdrawn in large numbers, and over 1500 out of the total of 2760 had gone within a decade, but others survived the short RMs and the later long RMLs.
I often thought about doing the same as Mark and applying to drive RMs again at Niagara Falls. Not sure that it would be the same buzz though as racing around London, with many incidents that wouldn't be out of place in 'On The Buses'.
