The RT was a really great bus. Everything London Transport learned working with the RT went into the design of the RM. The result being a truly magnificent bus. 50 years running in London streets. No other vehicle of any type could possibly equal that record. Incidentally I visited Bow depot when it housed trolley buses but that's another memory.
"No vehicle of any type" is a claim too bold. Trams such as Tatra T3 and RVR-6 have served for more, and even among buses the RM has rivals like the Ikarus 280 and LiAZ-677.
When you consider how much revenue they lose now it would have made sense to keep the conductors. Mind you they'd need a stabproof vest with the Londoners there today. I first rode the RM in 1959 when London was civilised.
Or not buy hundreds of bendy buses fare dodgers can take advantage of then bin them all and replace them with a thousand shitty expensive nostalgia buses that fare dodgers can again take advantage of
@@rabd9881 The original RM great that it was caused the demise of the trolleybus. They binned the trolley because they needed a big order to cover development of RM. The trolleys were the oldest so they went. A network of trolleys that were large, quiet and environmentally friendly lost forever. A lot were sold to Spain.
1982 was the year when Routemasters started being withdrawn in large numbers, and over 1500 out of the total of 2760 had gone within a decade, but others survived the short RMs and the later long RMLs.
It was so sad to see the RM go. Watching this took me right back to my childhood, a long time ago, I’m now 70. Hopping on & off the bus was natural, an everyday thing, just like a good cuppa ☕️ I only wish I had bought one!
Best of British, for sure. New buses full of plastic and electronics. Beautiful ending, especially the regular passengers acknowledging the occasion. The Routemaster might be down, but they will never be out and be around for many years to come. Hope they preserved 2760? Cracking, but sad video. Much appreciated, well done!
From bottom of my heart a big thanks to the uploader 😊 this video reminds me of my childhood time miss route 8 bus theses day's will not come back again!!
In Ushuaia (southern most city in Argentina) 2015 we found this old LT Route Master doing the round the city tourist ride. We had to the trip, many childhood London memories in southern Argentina. The only downside they had painted it blue and had to put a Mercedes engine in it, the old LT engine given up the ghost for lack of spares.
Expensive boring heaps of shit, in addition to how much it cost to buy them they’ve also lost thousands from fare dodgers. No operator outside of london will want them. Fuck Boris
You don't have to be in a wheelchair to be disabled. The majority of disabled users were people that benefited from having a conductor onboard to assist them.
There was a heritage day on the number 11 in October. The bus stopped at a bustop with a wheelchair user wishing to use the bus. She couldn't as it was a Routemaster and had to wait for the next bus. The Routemasters were also a pain for buggy users. Other than that so iconic, with a long life set to come.
Its the same as the Taxi trade. We had to change 500 vehicles in my area to accommodate wheelchair users at an additional cost of 15K per driver. We probably pick up 10 wheelchair users a week in total across our driver network. There must be a better way. I would love to see the wheelchair user stats for the buses and what it has cost to change all the buses.
SMK760F has had its repaint & Refurbishment of the Interior & Exterior into its 1968 London Transport Condition in its Red Livery with 1968 Adverts on the front & sides by Stagecoach London & Hants & Dorset Trim in Hampshire with the Interior Refurbished for London Bus Museum on a Five Year Loan from Stagecoach London
this is 2004 hearing the accents it seems more like 1960 i was born 1990 and talk like these ppl and cos i do everone accumes i am from kent or somewere ellse outside of london
I remember hopping on and off these busses as a young man. I found that queuing meant little in London in 1969. I ended up taking the tube from then on and only used busses for different routes.
I don’t believe it’s anything to do with the rear platform for disabled access.. it’s all to do with cost of conductor. Saving money .. so sad 😞 these buses are London! They could easily run a mixture of new buses and routemaster on routes
I was on the last bus. that's me falling onto the bench seat at Bow. it was a long sad day. Stagecoach did themselves proud. RMS Proper bus CAN I HAVE A DRIVE??
Hi Guy's my name is Mr C. T. Boxill-Harris I was wondering, why coudn't you find a nice fresh shiny Leyland Titan B15's and Repaint them to a Grey Green Color's just like the original Scania Grey Green's which were in the East London bus route's such as 125, 313 and also the bus route 103, if you guy would like to find about 11 Leyland Titan B15's, please could you Repaint them in the Exact Grey Green Bus Color's for us because it would be a Very Very Very Very Interesting Buses to see them Repainted to a Grey Green Color's and I'am a Big Fan of all of the Leyland Titan B15's😉😉😉😄😄
RM 871 is also on route 15, right? I rode it once but was disappointed to learn that the original engine was swapped to an Iveco or something like that...
Tridents are wrecks? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gbkGcf2_Kyk.html Listen to the sound of this bus and tell me it’s rubbish. Nostalgia merchant
I've flown planes as old as these buses, when they get to the end of there live they just give them a "full service" they basically re-strip the outer fuselage of the plane and replace it along with other miscellaneous parts. I didn't think our flight club owned any planes younger then 20 years and if an old Cessna can maintain flight at that age I'm sure a london bus can do better!
Its politics and the PC brigade that killed them. You can get wheelchairs on an RM we used to do it. and on the PD3's (similar) and old trams, at Blackpool The conductor leans back pulling the handles and the person with them gives the footrests a nudge up. The wheelcair fits safely in the conductors cubby hole by the staircase. Despite what the PC lot say, wheelchair users are rarely on their own. I only remember one occasion, and my driver came around and helped us then
I have never driven a routemaster but I totally agree with him about the new busses. I used to drive modern busses and they were completely knackered and falling to bits within a few years. They weren't built properly and made as cheaply as possible.
I only had my PSV since 2014, I have driven routemasters, and honestly compared to what I trained in, I loved driving them. I have driven RM and RML's all over London for private hire's and I always look forward in doing so. So much better then driving a Envrio 400 or something like that.

A very sad film just another reason to get out of the E.U. and run our own lives. A great bus that would never date and could have served Londoners for another 50 years.
@@mahammad We haven't left the EU yet, British Government Politician are still fighting over the redraw agreement with Brussels. it be another two years before we fully out of the European union,
Leaving the EU won't bring back the Routemaster, nor I suspect end the involvement of foreign concerns in runnng not only many of our bus companies, but also rail companies too come to that.
