Definitely have a look in some of the more popular E-208 groups on Facebook. Pretty much daily reports of issues, as these cars are getting older. I do like the car, but it really does have some issues where I think it's potentially a bit of a money/time pit (i.e. long waiting times for parts) and I would be hesitant to buy one second hand even though the prices are generally below the used EV market average. Unfortunately here in Germany the issues are a little bit better known, especially in forums like GoingElectric and used values are absolutely tanking for older Stellantis E-CMP cars (e208, Corsa, Mokka, Citroen E-C4 etc.) While I did get most of the repairs covered by Peugeot under warranty and good-will, I do expect the latter to become less common as these cars get older and Peugeot no longer sees the need to pay for things like the AC compressor out of warranty as they could cite age or "normal wear and tear".

The ID.3 is known for somewhat high battery degradation as you can see on the channel battery life and his experiences. @tzeimet 4 месяца назад
That's good to hear, definitely don't wish anyone a bad experience with the car. In the case that you have a 7kW OBC they are also more robust than our 11kW OBC, meaning to say the OBC failure is largely limited to the 11kW units. Which I later found out was the reason why the OBC issue is not particularly common in the UK, where cars almost exclusively have the 7kW OBC. The software update has to do with the car not bricking itself though in the event that the AC compressor shorts out, as before the software update the car might throw a traction fault warning as the AC compressor runs off the high voltage system. The M3 is a more capable car by all means. Definitely worth having a look at if its within your budget.

So generally speaking, you have more failures in EV than petrol ones, when they are suppossed to be more simple?
@tzeimet
@tzeimet 4 месяца назад
Although I hate clichés. It’s a Peugeot. They couldn’t build a decent petrol engine, why am I not surprised they can’t build a decent EV? The OBC problem is due to poor quality chips which they used, and the AC compressor because of sloppy manufacturing that allowed moisture into the circuit board of the electric AC compressor. Peugeot has had so many issues with their Puretech petrol, the old 1.6 VTi was a disaster, now the timing chains on the early 1.5 hdi are prone to failure and should be replaced. 🤷‍♂️ True to the stereotype I suppose. Almost every Peugeot engine design in the last 20 years has some catastrophic problem that crops up after a few years on the market. What I especially don’t like about Peugeot is they never tell you which models/series are affected by a particular problem, they don’t tell you what’s been improved when they replace parts. It’s just always “it‘s fixed now“ like with the first OBC that went. The same is true with the 1.5hdi they don’t tell you which series are affected or even which ones have the improved timing chain.

Unacceptably common on early models. The 11kW OBC on these early models is very unreliable, and the AC compressor is almost a matter of when rather than if. Since most people don’t drive their EVs that far, it’s often the 2nd or 3rd owner that gets saddled with these problems.

@tzeimet
@tzeimet 5 месяцев назад

Some EVs let you see the voltage delta between the cells which you can then keep an eye on and use as a guide to know when a balancing charge is required. Generally EVs should just be charged as needed though: charge to 100% when you need that extra range. In the case of my old Leaf, with just 18kWh usable capacity remaining, that's at least once a week! 😂
@tzeimet
@tzeimet 5 месяцев назад
Yes. Generally that’s good practice for NMC cells, for LFP cells it’s recommended by most manufacturers to charge them up to 100% regularly. (1x week according to Tesla). Some cars will also tell you to charge to 100% to balance the cells when necessary.

@tzeimet
@tzeimet 5 месяцев назад
Yes. I would recommend the 2023 facelift Lux over the trophy extended range unless you really need the extra 50-80km range (depending on driving style). I think the extra 40hp is noticeable, but idk if it’s worth the extra cost to most people. You can also check Bjørn Nyland‘s 1000km challenge with the 64kWh Luxury, it’s really one of the best charging EVs in the price range.
@tzeimet
@tzeimet 5 месяцев назад
Overall the MG4 Trophy Extended Range (77kWh) showed a relatively flat, stable curve with a short peak of 133kW between 17-20% and an average charging speed of 81kW (15-80%) and a time of 37 minutes. The official figure by MG is 10-80% in 38 Minutes (avg. 82kW) with a peak charging speed of 144kW. Despite having a longer range, the charging performance is slower in terms of average charging power than the 64kWh versions of the MG4 and notably significantly worse than rivals such as the VW ID.3 Pro S 77kWh. Although the lack of battery preheating capability in the ID is a negative in the winter.

Hi, great video i love it! Would you recommend buying 2020 GT model, on 32 000miles. How do you check the battery degradation?
@tzeimet
@tzeimet 6 месяцев назад
No. Generally I would definitely not recommend such an early version of the car as the OBC issues were very common at that time, especially if you have the 11kW OBC. The 11kW OBC is now on its 3rd revision since 2020. The defective moisture trap in the AC compressor also affects cars made up to 05/2022 and will eventually lead to the compressor failing. If you really want an e208 I would really look at something late 2022 onwards. To check the degradation you need a Bluetooth enabled OBD dongle (I use the Vlinker MC+) and a compatible app such as Carscanner. To OBD port can be found by removing the plastic panel under the steering column on LHD cars or behind a plastic panel in the glovebox for RHD cars. Once you have connected to the Bluetooth dongle and set up carscanner you can read the degradation value as calculated by the car’s battery management computer. Although a third party device such as Aviloo may be able to give a more accurate estimate. As you drive the car from 100% to near empty and the device uses this data to calculate the real capacity using consumption data.

Great in-depth review, thank you. The range was an eye-opener, it seemed to under perform quite a bit in your range test and that was really useful. I hope they'll put a 77kwh battery in the XPower version - I would take the extra weight and subsequent performance hit as an acceptable trade-off for the range gain.

The range was more or less what I was expecting from the car. Bearing in mind the WLTP range estimate is done at a mix of town, rural and motorway driving. The MG4 isn’t the most aerodynamic or efficient car, and that does get worse the faster you drive. Although I reckon the consumption is actually a hair better than my old e208 at the same speed. But overall I think it’s an acceptable value, also given the slightly colder than usual temperature. 9 degrees with the climate control set at 25 (the climate control in the car seems to run a bit colder than the set temperature). Plus I had regular non-EV all weather tyres on the car, the slick EV summer (Bridgestone Turanza T005 EV) tyres the car came with should make a 5-10% difference I reckon. But it’s still no Tesla M3 or Ioniq 6 when it comes to range and efficiency. I think this battery pack in the Xpower would justify the price more than the Extended Range, the price difference between the Long Range and this ER is a bit much at least in Europe. So AWD would justify it a bit more.

Not sure i get the logic on why MG went for a extenden range version. The 64kw already has pretty alright range. The price increase is also a bit stiff just for more battery. Real range is always not what the manufacturer says anyway. I think mine is 450km summertime at 20+ degrees but the max i have managed to get is 400. Wintertime when it is really cold like today with -26 celcius my range is 220km wich to me is impressive enough when it is that cold. All in all a good car but there are some real bugs. I need to go into the shop soon after 8000km to get some updates.

If I’m a bit cynical. I think it probably has something to do with MG trying to catch up with the nominal range of the Tesla M3 SR+ or ID.3 77kWh. So they can also claim >500km WLTP Although it does depend on use case, as the MG4 is far less efficient at high speeds than the M3. However the charging speed on the ER is so bad compared to the 64kWh. 38min 10-80% according to MG which gives 82kW average (also fitting with my experience, the 64kWh does 26 minutes 10-80% which gives 100kW average. Why the larger battery charges slower is beyond me. Probably the ER is the worst value for money, unless you really want/need that extra 13kWh capacity.

Yeah, it’s a fun car to drive and I even took some long journeys with the car, even down to Barcelona last year. But the reliability with this car has been horrendous, even the same extremely expensive part (OBC) breaking twice in only 90,000km, a part that should last the lifetime of the car.

its nice to see some real experience about reasonably priced cars! wonder the battery degradation is just about the mileage or the year affect too?

Yes, age is also a problem. I’ve read something like 1% per year even without driving the car. It’s best to store them around 50% charge when not using the cars for a long period of time. These traditional lithium (NMC) cells hate being stored at too low or very high states of charge. If the battery gets too low, “below 0” (if they are stored at low charge and self-discharge below 0%) then they are pretty much dead as @aging wheels demonstrated with his Wheego.

It's always good getting an owner review /insight into the MG4 because you get to understand more of the daily user experience than is mainly portrayed by dedicated car reviewers

Thanks! That was my main motivation for making this video. As an owner, you get a better understanding of the potential pros and cons of the car. There was no review about the range or charging speed of this car, the latter I found to be a bit of a disadvantage of the car, and I wanted to make a video to inform potential buyers among the other pros and cons of the car.

Thanks for the awesome feedback! I created this video because I really couldn’t find much comprehensive info about the car, being so new on the German market. I just remember looking through random forum and FB group posts before buying, especially regarding the charging speed (64kWh v 77kWh cars). Even my dealer wasn’t super knowledgeable about it, but kind of to be expected as mine was the first extended range he ever saw in the flesh.

@@tzeimet Can you use the "favourites" buttons on the driving wheel to enable One Pedal quickly with them? I've read it has to be enabled manually every time you start the car, so l was wondering if it was possible to make that process a bit less annoying using those buttons.
@tzeimet
@tzeimet 8 месяцев назад
@@manthe3711 No unfortunately (as of the current software version) only 4 functions may be selected for the favourite buttons. 1. Climate Controls, opens a menu which can be operated using the right joystick. 2. 360 camera, can only be activated at low speeds. 3. Cycle through drive modes 4. Cycle through regen modes, A (Automatic), 1, 2, 3. The functions are the same for left and right button, just you can program two different functions one on either side.

Thank God you made this video. I started messing with my surface book 3 to test out different Operating Systems and Windows debloaters and accidentally bricked Windows after a bad restore. My keyboard and touches were unresponsive and I couldn't find a way to boot from my USB to reinstall Windows. This video helped me fix everything in about 2 minutes after it all broke.
