I mention the "Luxury Spec" quite a number of times in the video, this corresponds to the UK Trophy Long Range (LR) Spec. All references to price were referenced to MSRP.

It's always good getting an owner review /insight into the MG4 because you get to understand more of the daily user experience than is mainly portrayed by dedicated car reviewers

Thanks! That was my main motivation for making this video. As an owner, you get a better understanding of the potential pros and cons of the car. There was no review about the range or charging speed of this car, the latter I found to be a bit of a disadvantage of the car, and I wanted to make a video to inform potential buyers among the other pros and cons of the car.

Thanks for the awesome feedback! I created this video because I really couldn’t find much comprehensive info about the car, being so new on the German market. I just remember looking through random forum and FB group posts before buying, especially regarding the charging speed (64kWh v 77kWh cars). Even my dealer wasn’t super knowledgeable about it, but kind of to be expected as mine was the first extended range he ever saw in the flesh.

@@tzeimet Can you use the "favourites" buttons on the driving wheel to enable One Pedal quickly with them? I've read it has to be enabled manually every time you start the car, so l was wondering if it was possible to make that process a bit less annoying using those buttons.

@@manthe3711 No unfortunately (as of the current software version) only 4 functions may be selected for the favourite buttons. 1. Climate Controls, opens a menu which can be operated using the right joystick. 2. 360 camera, can only be activated at low speeds. 3. Cycle through drive modes 4. Cycle through regen modes, A (Automatic), 1, 2, 3. The functions are the same for left and right button, just you can program two different functions one on either side.

Thanks! The XPower is really a one of a kind car. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Since the battery in the Xpower is the regular 64kWh, it should also have better charging performance than the Trophy Extended Range, which is really my only gripe with the 77kWh ER.

Great in-depth review, thank you. The range was an eye-opener, it seemed to under perform quite a bit in your range test and that was really useful. I hope they'll put a 77kwh battery in the XPower version - I would take the extra weight and subsequent performance hit as an acceptable trade-off for the range gain.

The range was more or less what I was expecting from the car. Bearing in mind the WLTP range estimate is done at a mix of town, rural and motorway driving. The MG4 isn’t the most aerodynamic or efficient car, and that does get worse the faster you drive. Although I reckon the consumption is actually a hair better than my old e208 at the same speed. But overall I think it’s an acceptable value, also given the slightly colder than usual temperature. 9 degrees with the climate control set at 25 (the climate control in the car seems to run a bit colder than the set temperature). Plus I had regular non-EV all weather tyres on the car, the slick EV summer (Bridgestone Turanza T005 EV) tyres the car came with should make a 5-10% difference I reckon. But it’s still no Tesla M3 or Ioniq 6 when it comes to range and efficiency. I think this battery pack in the Xpower would justify the price more than the Extended Range, the price difference between the Long Range and this ER is a bit much at least in Europe. So AWD would justify it a bit more.

Good point about regen and brake lights. Can't believe more people don't mention that. It's important that the car lets drivers behind know when you are slowing down!!

My e-208 has just as strong or even stronger regen in B mode, and the brake lights don’t turn on until you press the brake pedal. I’ve almost been rear ended by inattentive drivers a few times. There is an EU regulation on the issue, but, I think the threshold is still way too lenient (-0.13g deceleration).

Not sure i get the logic on why MG went for a extenden range version. The 64kw already has pretty alright range. The price increase is also a bit stiff just for more battery. Real range is always not what the manufacturer says anyway. I think mine is 450km summertime at 20+ degrees but the max i have managed to get is 400. Wintertime when it is really cold like today with -26 celcius my range is 220km wich to me is impressive enough when it is that cold. All in all a good car but there are some real bugs. I need to go into the shop soon after 8000km to get some updates.

If I’m a bit cynical. I think it probably has something to do with MG trying to catch up with the nominal range of the Tesla M3 SR+ or ID.3 77kWh. So they can also claim >500km WLTP Although it does depend on use case, as the MG4 is far less efficient at high speeds than the M3. However the charging speed on the ER is so bad compared to the 64kWh. 38min 10-80% according to MG which gives 82kW average (also fitting with my experience, the 64kWh does 26 minutes 10-80% which gives 100kW average. Why the larger battery charges slower is beyond me. Probably the ER is the worst value for money, unless you really want/need that extra 13kWh capacity.

Nice review, at 11.20 you mention that the one pedal driving doesn't work until the battery is warmed up... is this correct? I can understand if this was to do with a battery level above 95% as the regen as part of one pedal would have no where to dump the power to. I may not have got to it yet as I've paused the video, Bjorn Nylqnd on a recent XPower review had an issue when the charge got below 11% that performance was severely throtled back... is this the same for your car? Many thanks.

Yes, one-pedal drive is dependent on both battery temperature and state of charge. It won't work at a high state of charge, although I couldn't tell you the exact figure. Regarding the power limit at low SOC, I've only had the car down to 14% as of yet, and I didn't notice any power limit. But I have read about it in various MG4 groups so Bjorn's observation does appear to be correct.

What's the rear visibility like? Good to see a rear wiper on the MG4 now, but it looks tiny..

It’s genuinely quite bad, not so much because of the wiper. But because of the centre rear headrest which obscures much of the already small window. I believe 2022 models didn’t have the centre headrest. Personally I rely much more on the camera(s) than with previous cars.

@@tzeimet thanks, that's what I suspected. I guess you could remove the headrest if you don't carry 3 passengers. Cameras tend to get fogged up in the winter so I wouldn't want to rely on them.

“Luxury” is just the spec. In the UK it’s just called the trophy. Considering this is a car which plays in the same price as a half decent new Golf or Octavia TDI automatic, or even slightly less with subsidies in most EU countries. It’s rather comparable with those cars. New Car prices in Europe are completely nuts at the moment.
