Surface Book 3: How to enter BIOS (UEFI) and Enable Battery Limit Mode

The method for entering the Surface Book 3 UEFI BIOS has changed from the Surface Book 2. The Microsoft Website doesn't yet show how to enter the BIOS. The Surface Book 3 also has a Battery Limit Mode to help prevent battery wear when plugged in for long periods of time.

thank you,was pulling my hair out for days trying to figure out why the battery was only charging 50 per cent then stopping back to normal now.cheers

I just got myself a surface book 3, I am presently using a book 1, I had to see your video to confirm that book3 when booting up shows the "windows" logo and NOT the word "surface" kinda ticks me off a bit tho.

Thank you man. I build Surface Pro's all the time but was totally thrown by the Book - didn't think to find the volume and power keys on the top of the screen, just the same as a Pro! Interestingly, I was holding the volume up button for ages and it wasn't until I let go of it that the BIOS appeared. Still, I got nowhere near my solution until watching your video so thank you dude and no thanks to MS lol

Thanks! Took me some trial and error to figure it out too. MS wasn't much help back when I made the video and SB3 had just been released, it's a shame they haven't updated their help guide yet.

Thank God you made this video. I started messing with my surface book 3 to test out different Operating Systems and Windows debloaters and accidentally bricked Windows after a bad restore. My keyboard and touches were unresponsive and I couldn't find a way to boot from my USB to reinstall Windows. This video helped me fix everything in about 2 minutes after it all broke. You cannot imagine my relief lol. Thank you so much for making this video!

Hi. My book2 base died and i only using it at tablet mode. Must i enable this option if i want to increase the battery life? Thanks a lot.

Yes, it's a good idea if you're using it plugged in all the time.

Hey man, this video was very helpful. This feature is actually very useful when you're using the surface dock because the surface dock requires it to be connected and charging the whole time which is bad for the battery. If you are not using the gpu, you can just connect the surface dock to the tablet portion.

I have a book 2 and it does limit to 50% on both batteries 1 & 2. as I remember it, it did require a Bios update.

I will have to try that on mine, I haven't checked since getting the SB3 perhaps there could have been a bios update for the SB3.

I have now tried this on my SB3 and I can confirm that it works now, on both batteries. Thanks for your help and 👍 to Microsoft for finally fixing this problem

Should I enable the battery limit button on my Surface 2? My batteries are drained and not charging and while I have the power adapter connected the laptop turns off after about 5 minutes?

No, I don't think this mode will make any difference once the batteries are already degraded. It's meant for laptops that are plugged in all the time so they don't get degraded in the first place. Probably the only thing which can be done in your case is to replace the battery, unfortunately that's a very difficult task on the SB.

Can i lock bios? This means that when the bios is locked it will require a password to enter the bios.

I can't get to this menu. It just gives me a bios password screen. It is stuck there.

Do you know how to adjust the processor power management in surface 3, i warched sole videos but i just couldnt find any processor power managent unit or somewhere to adjust. Please reply if you know about it. I want to adjust the processor power lower to prevent overheating

No unfortunately I do not know how to change the power management, the settings are greyed out in Windows Control Panel (I've seen this on all ice lake ultrabooks I've used) the only thing you can do is change the power mode in the taskbar (AFAIK). The rest is all automatic e.g. it lowers the power usage when you unplug it.

It prevents the battery in the surface tablet portion (clipboard) from being charged to over 50%, in order to protect the battery when plugged in for long periods of time.

@@dderrkii Unfortunately not, it's just an on or off option. It also doesn't work on the surface book base, just the clipboard.

The battery limit mode is meant to limit the of the tablet to 50%, this is because having the battery at 100% all the time while on AC is bad for battery health and can lead to battery degradation, and a loss of overall capacity.

Tom Zeimet Oh .... So My battery will never charge above 50% as long as my ac is connected... Right now I have feature on and AC plugged and battery is falling ( currently it is 93%)

@@cattymed4419 Yes, it will not charge beyond 50%, but mine did not fall when I activated the feature, I unplugged it to make it fall beyond 50% before plugging it in again. The battery limit only works on the tablet, not the base though.
