Lovely, I remember you fixing and repairing quite a few earlier model iPhones a couple of years back (ro so) in the earlier days of the channel. Only thing of course is that some iPhones can be iCloud locked so you really have to choose carefully. Myself, I'd have taken a punt on quite a lot of the phones, hoping to get at least some working (especially if you still have that box of donor iCloud locked phones whose screens/batteries/other parts can be repurposed).

Replacing the screen only without the frame is not only easier, but faster and more professional. Aftermarket frames are not the greatest quality, including the way they mount the screen and other pre-mounted parts. Moving all the small fragile parts over from the original frame is riskier and takes longer than replacing the screen only (especially the glued-in ear speaker, vibrator, and antennas in the frame). It makes me cringe when I see anyone using a messy glue to mount the screen and back, which makes future repairs more difficult by having to scrape it all off. Repair part stores sell cheap $1 factory cut double-sided adhesive tape for most models. For models which are not available, they sell generic rolls of 3M tape of various widths (1-5 mm) for easy mounting. Just my 2cents.

@@zul_fix no they wouldn’t. First after some period of time no consumer would stop upgrading to new tech devices. New features and innovations keep on attracting new customers. Helping 3rd party repairs also allows the companies to retain their customer base. It also reduces the expense for those companies to recycle broken devices and in turn reduce the environmental impact. Allowing less options for repair would only lose customer base. I was someone who wanted to buy MacBook Pro/Air. But after researching on how they are unrepairable and the limited options I have I decided to settle to other brands which I am now happy with. Except for the iPhone, iPad I have switched into more alternative repairable options that I could use for long time and still get a good experience.

The other day a care organization that I'm a client for gave me a bunch of devices that they were going to throw away. I got a ThinkPad Yoga 370, two Galaxy A32 phones and a Galaxy A20. Dude, I got a few pretty decent ROG prebuilt (dated August 2020 in their inventory) from a government office that tried to get rid of them. Bought 6 of them for around 200 USD. Turns out all of them have either bad HDD or bad RAM plus clogged up fans. So I just get the parts I need for building my own PC, sell the rest of the parts for donors or just second hand parts on Facebook. And that's how I have my current PC, i5-10400F and a 2060. I also got a few decent MSI and Dell laptops from the same office, most of them only have bad HDD or bad RAM and that's it. One got a bad battery, but already fixed it and sold it for 400 bucks. Which is the cost I need to purchase 10 of those laptops. Also saving one for myself, just hope the delivery for the RAM will be faster than the estimated delivery time

In my country (Quebec, Canada), E-Waste is managed by our province which means most recyclers are government run. This is nice since the service is easy to access and free, but because they have refurbishing tresholds and contracted companies, individuals are restricted and often forbidden to pick up anything. I work as a service tech for a restaurant group A number of years ago all our stores got a number of Amazon fire tablets that the stores were "supposed" to use as mobile training items. Many stores "misplaced" or hid them and eventually over time we switched to chromebooks. I've found a number of these tablets due to new store managers and such and have worked to turn them into document tablets. They contain the operation/troubleshooting manuals, cleaning and PM guides, and other key/core info including model/serial numbers on all the equipment the specific store. I've produced 4 of them and the stores that have been using them quite a lot now. It also helps us techs out as the stores now can give us better information on machines that aren't working right

I'm definitely a fan of going to my local e-waste drop off and seeing what's been left 'OUTSIDE OF THE DEPOSIT BIN.' I put that in quotes because if it's inside the bin, then it's theft, but if it's outside of the bin, it's fair game. So many corporate folks, mainly enterprise and data center folks, will drop of boxes and boxes of servers blades with CPUs & registered ECC DDR4 since they have to upgrade the entire platform (minus PSUs, I/O, etc of course) in order to upgrade their CPUs. If it's on the curb then it's fair game. As someone who also repairs devices, Ive saved A LOT of money finding iPhones that are either activation locked, or have one problem or another, but their display assemblies are usually fine. Mostly OLEDs, but sometimes there's an iPhone 11 or two, so a FEW LCDs sneak in there. The panels are usually A/B grade, and 100% intact. So I'm kinda in it for the display assembly harvesting, but . . the OnePlus 9 Pro I'm using right now, I found her new in the box on one of those runs. Well, I say 'new', but I'm not 100% sure, but she didn't have any signs of wear, AND the factory screen protector hadn't been removed yet. I'm glad people take their stuff to e-waste places, and not just because it's good for me, but it's also good for the environment. I'm also a huge fan of devices getting second lives. Speaking of second lives, lately I've been harvesting the LCDs out of dead laptops (although I have been able to fix a few of them, but most of them are toast). Usually they're FHD or QHD, and then I'll snag an LVDS driver control board, and build fun little project monitors. They're also perfect for Raspberry Pi projects. They're great. The control boards only run $15 or so, and since most of them are actually repurposed prototyping units, it's full circle ewaste prevention. Great video brother!!

It's fun to visit e-waste center! I do it for 2 years and have picked up several nice phones (Pixel 2, HTC U11, U11+, Xiaomi MIX2S, Sony Z1~Z5, Nokia 9 etc.) and even prototypes. Just look for e-waste centers with map apps, tel them or ask employees politely on site, get the permission to let you pick things up for pretty low cost. That iPad 1 might need battery replacement too - I once picked 2 from my local e-waste center, one being dead and one flickering with 3~5 second interval when plugged. Exchange batteries and the flickering one worked.

The ipad 1 is actually ok except for the battery. I had one that only flashed the screen and all it needed was a battery replacement and it works fine. It would be interesting to see it repaired. great video

Wow thanks for your video. Living in the biggest but let's be honest not the richest country. I'm just amazed by the quantity and quality of electronics on this Ewaste. In our similar landfills, it's really possible to find some old boards from the early 00s and pot-bellied televisions.

I got inspired by trying to attempt this at my local e-waste shops and they said they couldn't. It sucks because its such a waste when you could fix it, and resell it for more usage to come. Amazing jackpot by the way! What is the music that is used in the background? I've heard it somewhere before at 6:15.

I would have trouble picking my own phone out of a job lot, so the fact Hugh can identify these random phones immediately is impressive.

I' really amazed on whats thrown away. We use every device either as long as it can be used or when it's so far gone we can't repair them. Invested in some more repair tools so I can even repair phones now at work.

I just started working for a store that buys old/nonfunctioning hardware, then refurbishes it, so it can be resold to people who either wants to buy refurbed, or simply can't afford new. I got a brand new Lenovo Legion with 8 gigs of RAM and a GTX1650 for 350 dollars, simply because the keyboard happened to be in Spanish.

I rescued a HP Envy 17 laptop from a skip. It had a broken screen hinge and a few missing key caps which I repaired easily. I purchased a replacement power supply from eBay for £8.00 including postage and the laptop powered up with no problems. Not only did it have a quad core, 8 thread i7 CPU and Nvidia GPU, It also still had a 1 Terabyte hard drive and 16 Gigs of RAM, as well as a working copy of Windows and all the user data still on the drive. After reformatting and re-installing Windows, my wife claimed the laptop for her Facebook gaming, and has been using it for over two years now. One of many great finds I have rescued from skips over the years. It just shows what a "throw away" society we are becoming!

iPad 1 usually does that when the battery voltage drops under 2 volts/ cell, slow charging the cells usually brings them back to life, no need for replacement unless it is bloated

With those Samsungs I often use an external monitor through a usb-c dock w/ pd charging to test if it's more than the screen. It would've been tricky with those ones since they're locked though. On the lock screen you just see a lock icon on the monitor as it waits for you to unlock the phone. Ideally with a customer device you can just keyboard in a passcode or password. Patterns are way harder to do since you're using a mouse or touch screen blind usually. With all that said, having that tool as an option gives you more information and a really easy way to recovery data without a full screen assembly.

That was an awesome find, I'm amazed at how many devices you managed to pick up, and how many you managed to get working! As you say, you have to be careful as to what to pick up and what not to, since a lot of the devices at an E-Waste center probably belong there as they are too far gone. That said, given what they were selling, I'd have had an absolute field day if I was there. I'd purposely take a "holiday" over there just to see what I could salvage and repair. :)

That Blackberry is the Torch 9800, the first of the 9800 series, IF memory serves, it was quite a 'Lackluster specced phone', I had the 9810 which had better processor and memory, and, I REALLY liked it during the time I had it. the ONLY downside I found was my big ass thumbs had troubles with the small keys on the keyboard lol. It's a shame Blackberry never continued and thus went on to make a new version of the 9810 (I know they did a slide up phone, but it wasn't the same), or other manufacturers (like Unihertz) didn't make a version of this particular model. My other FAVOURITE design of hardware QWERTY keyboard is the Nokia E7 and the 'E7 like' Planet Computers Astro Slide 5G (takes me back to when I had a Psion 3C organiser! hahaha) 😏 😎🇬🇧
