I agree with other comments that there are a lot of individual design issues, but I think before all that, this video started with a fundamentally flawed concept of "deck masters = planeswalker commanders". There are several key differences, and not just "technically this works like...", but factors that lead into various unforced errors in design which even someone who didn't understand Magic as a game probably wouldn't have made (e.g., Strike Ninja no longer doing its one job of dodging removal, Dark Magician not counting as a Wizard for Dark Magician Girl). Deck masters are all monsters in Yugioh, but monsters neither translate cleanly to creatures or planeswalkers in Magic. Creatures are less fragile than monsters, because they cannot be targeted individually by attacks, while planeswalkers can be attacked but generally cannot engage in combat themselves. Additionally, all deck masters start off the field and can still apply their effects, and can only summon themselves once because you lose the game if they are destroyed, unlike commanders which mainly operate only when in play but can be cast and re-cast no matter how many times they are removed. So, if designing a commander, whether a creature or planeswalker, you would want to pick cards with designs still make sense with these differences between games. And more limiting, commanders are always "legendary", which is not just a mechanical restriction, but also a flavor one. Kaiser Sea Horse and Strike Ninja are not legendary, they are generic units with no real lore to speak of. Meanwhile, named creatures with designs closely matching the planeswalker-style incremental value each turn design, like Freed the Matchless General or The Creator, were skipped over because they were never arbitrarily chosen to be made into deck masters.

Ok, this is going to be long but I’m going to modify most, if not all, of the cards he made. I’m going to try and keeping the flavor of the cards the same and doing as small of changes as personable to fit Magic The Gathering (MTG) better. For those who don’t know MTG's color text code, here is a key: U = Blue B = Black R = Red W = White G = Green Fist is Dark Magician, A 2URB (two colorless, 1 Blue, 1 Red, 1 Black [Only time I’m giving this example.]). I give the magician Blue and Red for spell slinging and Black because he is 'The Dark Magician'. He will still have 5 loyalty and keep his -2 ability. His +2 will now be +1 and will read “Manifest the top two cards of you deck as 0/1 artifact hat tokens with reach. A manifested creature card can be turned face up for their mana cost.” This still fits the show as some times other monsters are in the hats too. The -10 ultimate ability will now be -6, and will target all opponents instead of just one, Eliot over costed this ability. Hitting only enchantments and artifacts is still strong but now it will only need one turn to set up and still not be available on cast. It is not as strong as destroy all creatures or exiling all of one card type, but most EDH (Commander) decks are still reliant on monsters. Strike Ninja Over all, he’s too cheap. That 0-cost blink is just too good for two mana. I think changing his cost to three Orzhov (Orzhov is a black/white “{W/B}” mana symbol) and giving the ninja Extort will work here. I would also change the -2 to “Gain control of target an artifact creature with mana value of three or less or a non-creature artifact.” Extort: Whenever you cast a spell, you may pay {W/B}. If you do, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain that much life. Lord of D. I just don’t think mono blue works here. Most dragons in MTG are red. The drake creature type is common in blue but they are not dragons. So, I would change the Lord of D cost and color to be 2RG or 2RR. Going mono red will put him in the right color for most dragons and if we go red and green then he will be an alternative for 'Sarkan Vol'. Kuriboh My big issue here is the ultimate ability. Instead of -7 it should be -X for three reasons. First is that you have to sacrifice “Kuriboh” tokens, nothing else will do, and second is the fact you have to gain 4 loyalty and keep all of your “Kuriboh” tokens alive (five turns min.). The final reason is that by the time you get 7 loyalty with “Kuriboh” tokens alive, and will most likely have less than three alive, you can only destroy about one or two targets. This is too little for its cost and progression. Another way to fix it is to make the -2 ability a +2 ability, and change the +1 to a -1 and target any permanent not just your opponents. The reason for the change to target anything is the deal no and take no damage clause doesn’t prevent a creature from blocking. Kaiser Sea Horse Only two small changes here, both in the +1 ability. First is to change the color from just white to white and blue. The reason for this change is that Kaiser in Yo-Gi-Oh is a light monster that is used as two tributes for a light monster. Being a blue and white creature here in a Magic card, have a blue and white cost reduction just makes sense. Last but definitely not least, Dark Magician Girl. My only change is to change the token from a 6/5 to a 5/4. This is just a personal choice. I started playing Magic back during 7th edition and a 6/6 creature was considered huge. Look at Shivan Dragon, the classic MTG dragon, it’s a 5/5 with effects. So Blue Eyes White Dragon feels like a 6/5 and thus Dark Magician would be a 5/4. Overall good card even with out my change.

Strike ninja need the discard effect and artifact returns at the end of turn clauses. The stealing effect in red is only temporary at low mana (generally 3). Trust me, permanent gaining control at 2 is insane. -2: Discard one card from your hand, Untap target artifact and gain control of it until end of turn. If it is a creature gains haste until end of turn. (Artifacts can be creatures.)

@@Eliot_Draws Magician of Black Chaos is essentially an older Dark Magician in lore, it's kind of hinted at through the spell card Dedication Through Light and Darkness, where you have to sacrifice a Dark Magician to special summon Dark Magician of Chaos from your hand, deck, or graveyard, and Dark Magician of Chaos is a retrain of Magician of Black Chaos. Both Dark Magician of Chaos and Magician of Black Chaos are part of the Chaos Archetype which almost always resolves around using Light and Dark attribute monsters almost exclusively, even though both Dark Magician of Chaos and Magician of Black Chaos do not have effects revolving around those attributes, they are still a part of that Archetype. So it makes sense to have a White Mana cost.

White and Black in magic does not correlate to light and dark, it is more complicated than that. All the colours imply and can lean towards a ton of different aspects, but were they to be boiled down I would attribute white with selflessness, and black with selfishness. There can be light black cards, and dark white cards. What colour identities a card can have is a varied discussion, and the same character can show aspects of different colours in different portrayals. Your layout for white and black for chaos can definitely make sense for the cards. However, the colour most associated with Chaos in mtg, is red.

I hope you try again some months from now, with a better understanding of MTG some feedback: -card feel is way off, using such a cool ninja as a planeswalker with lame abilities instead of an evasive creature -the colors of the cards don't fit them well, you don't understand what monsters would make good planeswalkers and the effects are ranging from boring and situational to overcosted and weak, nothing that inspires you to build a deck around them -seriously why the ninja is a planeswalker, and with white as a cost, and HYBRID blue / black mana? once again, no hate man, just hope you improve the cool idea

The way you reason the effects and colour identities shows an earnest interest to translate them, but it is also only surface level. Where some of these effecta go together and others do not. Choosing to make all of them planeswalkers is also, strange. An interesting thought experiment, but I see little that grounds them as being planeswalkers mechanically or lore wise. Where a lot of these effects can be showcased through creatures. Here's a way to translate strike ninja as a creature: 2UU 2/2 When strike ninja enters the battlefield, if you cast it, gain control of target artifact. Exile two creature cards from your graveyard: Exile strike ninja, then return it to play under its owners control. Strike ninja cannot be blocked. This shows off tye flicker effect, makes it an annoyings but small threat that cannot steal multiple artifacts all the time. Maybe even limit it to "gain control of target artifact with mana value 3 or less." As it might be somewhat strange to have the ninja steal multiple darksteel collosi.

There is, a lot more than can be done with this concept and translating these characters into magic. A lot of what they do can be portrayed with much more flavour. Magical hats for example, magic has ways to create face down creatures, and even ways ti shuffle face down creatures to confuse the opponent. Also, blue can copy spells and self mill. @@Eliot_Draws and I can definitely see the dark magician being black, and I can also see interpretations where he isn't. If making dark magician as a planeswalker, I would focus on the aspect of being a magician, and the way a lot of the cards around him work, both in destroying or banishing creatures or cards and knowing a lot of powerful spells. Here is one way this could be done. Dark magician 4UB (blue black) Planeswalker, 4 loyalty. +1: You may discard a non-land card, if you do, destroy target creature an opponent controls. (This references thousand knifes and other dark magic spells that remove enemy resources, the discard as an extra cost also harkens back to a type of creatures in magic called spellshapers: creatures simulating a wizard casting their spells by using your hand as a resource.) -2: manifest the top 2 cards of your library. (Manifest: "Take a card and place it face down on the battlefield as a colourless 2/2 creature." We could make this even more like the hats, but manifest also allows you to flip up the cards on the table adding a pulling something out of a hat aspect of magic tricks, and similar to those boxes dark magician uses in the show. Manifests are 2/2 creatures so it's more costly in loyalty.) -7: You get an emblem with: "Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, search your library for an instant or sorcery spell and add it to your hand, then shuffle." (This ability relates to dark magician being a master of magic, and references the many tutor effects the dark magician and it's archetype has.) The first ability is very black both in discard and destruction, the second ability is very blue in manifest, and the third ability is very blue and black as both those colour tutors. So there is a dark magician which will be destroying opponents resources (thousand knifes or "Go dark magician, dark magic attack." Possible every turn) Protect itself by summoning face down cards, and when at full power never runs out of spells.

P good overall, strike ninja is.... perhaps not broken, but it's abilities are too powerful for it's mana cost, and it would be a sideboard card against any artifact-centric deck in any deck that could run it. 2 Mana planeswalkers are very hard to balance, and tend to be either trash or very very good. Dack Fayden _does_ have that ability yes, but he's an extra mana to cast, and he can activate that ability only once every _third_ turn while remaining loyalty-neutral, while strike ninja can activate it's steal ability every other turn. The only thing I think might balance it out is it has no inbuilt protection and dies to a bolt, but against a deck that plays a lot of artifacts that are important to their game plan, you steal their best artifact/biggest artifact creature, then I'm not certain they're gonna be able to remove the ninja unless they were already very ahead on board state. Blue gets cost reducing abilities, yes, but not as often as green for creatures. Green gets hexproof as well, and has many more dragons then blue, and more importantly has dragons that focus much more on winning the game rather then being random utility creatures. I think lord of d really should be G or GU, if it were me I'd probably give him a + ability and make him RUG, since as it stands he's a pretty underwhelming commander. Effects that generate creature tokens with abilities list the abilities, so dark magician's +1 would read 'Create two 0/1 colorless Hat artifact creature tokens with defender and "when this creature leaves the battlefield, mill one card"', the only exception to this is if hat tokens were a set wide mechanic that were generated by a lot of different cards (in which case no p/t would be stated, it would just say "create two hat tokens"), but i dont think that was the intent. I really like Kuriboh lol, a WB Elspeth in the command zone isn't bad. The amount of work you need to put in to wipe the board with him is way too high for that ability to be worthwhile though. Also, the formatting on the last two abilities is p off. The second ability, as worded, creates three black 1/1 creature tokens with subtype Kuriboh, as no name is specified the name of each of those tokens is it's subtypes plus the word "Token", so "Kuriboh Token". Then the last ability forces you to sacrifice all permanents with the type "token" and the subtype "Kuriboh". That works just fine, but then you show the Kuriboh token and it's name is Kuriboh and it's subtype is demon, so I think what you meant to do is 'Create three 1/1 black Demon creature tokens named "Kuriboh"' and 'Sacrifice all creature tokens you control named "Kuriboh"'. This is a much wierder effect in magic, and doesn't really do anything that's worth the extra wordiness, so I'd personally just make Kuriboh a creature type and remove the demon creature type from them. Then, the third ability works as is, but why not remove the requirement that all your sacrificed kuribohs be tokens, and have it read "Sacrifice all Kuriboh Creatures you control" to be more in line with Detonate? An unrelated slight nitpick is "This way this turn" isn't necessary. "The number of Kuriboh tokens sacrificed this turn" would include any kuriboh tokens you sacrificed from any ability hat turn, "the number of Kuriboh tokens sacrificed this way" is the number of Kuriboh tokens sacrificed by this particular activation of Kurboh's -7 loyalty ability. If you were to do the ability twice, there would be a separate X value for both of them, equal to the number of creatures you had sacrificed in the process of each of those activation and only those activations, they wouldn't interact with each other. I'd wanna playtest Kaider Seahorse and Dark magician girl cause tbh I have no idea how to evaluate them, I'd guess that kaiser seahorse is mid to bad, and dark magician girl is quite good, just based on her passive and -1 alone, though the 6/5 has neither protection nor evasion, so it wont win the game on it's own... I'm imagining a wizard tribal deck structured a lot like the delve decks I played with friends back during khans, I think it could be pretty decent. Having Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl in the command zone makes you 4-color WUBR, which is a lot, not really sure what white's doing there either, I think I would likely play some white duel lands for a few control spells and dark magician and that's it. Also, based on the ratio of starting life totals, 8000/20, one stat point in mtg is equal to 400 stat points in yugioh. Your system is very similar to that, as, rounding down and at multiples of 500, atk/400 is equal to atk/500 until 2000 where atk/400 is one more then atk/500. To be clear though I think, from the stats you give the dark magician token, that that is what you're doing, adding a single stat point after the 2000 mark, not making every 500 worth two after the 2000 mark, which would make dark magician a 7/5 if the doubling starts _at_ 200 and a 6/4 if it starts _after_ 2000. Just something to be aware of, this system drifts out of sync with the life total ratio one again at 4000, and every multiple of 2000 after. This isn't super relevant for yugioh as far as I know, but it's something.
@Eliot_Draws
@Eliot_Draws 12 дней назад
Dark magician having a white cost was because in destroys all artifacts and enchantments so I was thinking white or green since they commonly destroy enchantments. The idea for strike ninja was it was better then Dack Fayden on cost in exchange for the fact that you have to set strike ninja to 1 loyalty making any damage lethal along side the small cost of exiling a creature in the grave. Unless your running many artifact creatures I thought you could deal with strike ninja by combat. for kuriboh I honestly hand no idea what the proper syntax for that effect would be though I wanted it to be more the a one sided destroy everything ultimate. for stat point ratios I would consider 2000 to be equal to 4 stat points as 2000 is just high enough to be decent with out any other effects just like how 4 attack on a 4 cost card is decent, assuming it's toughness is also 4. Also if we scale stat points to levels you can see on average level 4 monsters reach around 2000 points however if we go up to level 6 we cap around 2500 and at level 8 around 3000 points unless the whole point of the card is to exceed that number.

@@Eliot_Draws Yeah, dark magician being WRB makes sense looking at the card alone, I was talking about the pair of Dark Magician + Girl, which together don't really seem to want white all that much, as a commander pair. Let's think about a hypothetical board for a second, turn 2 I have two artifact creatures, and I pass to you, you play Strike ninja and take one of my artifact creatures, that creature can now block the only other creature on board. On my next turn, only that creature will not have summoning sickness, so you've effectively protected your ninja for a turn with it's -2, next turn you'll refresh it to 3 loyalty. There's obviously a lot of situations that can tip the scales back in my favor, and not everything you take will be a blocker, but mana rocks let you play blockers and stop me from playing attackers, artifacts with card draw do the same for cards in hand, etc, so the tempo you're taking from me with the steal can easily serve as pseudo-protection for the ninja. The exiling a creature from your grave is definitely an interesting restriction on this, i think it's still incredibly good to loop ninja only 1-2 times, which _should_ be reasonably doable, idk, i def wanna playtest with these cards they seem interesting. Yeah i mean again, the way you formatted Kuriboh works completely fine, the only issue is it doesn't generate the exact token you showed on screen. Balance wise, it really depends on how easy it is to get kuriboh tokens, just by itself the -7 is near impossible to make destroy any permanents, 3 1/1s are not going to survive 4 turns in a multiplayer commander game, and probably wouldn't in a 2-player format either tbh, esp on turn 5+. If Kuriboh tokens were incredibly easy to generate, and you could play Kuriboh, +1, +1, and then have like 6-10 kuriboh tokens on board, then it's still mostly a symmetrical board wipe, since you can't have been spending your mana doing much other then creating kuribohs, which all get sacced. This, I would also need to playtest in the hypothetical yugioh-mtg format it exists in, with access to whatever kuriboh-generation cards there are, but I think it's cool just for it's first two abilities anyways. I'm still confused what exactly your system for converting stats is though, cause you said 2000 should convert to 4, but 2100 converts to 5 on dark magician girl's token, and the system you put in the video works in increments of 500 so 2000 and 2100 should convert to the same thing? Also a vanilla 4/4 would have to cost 3 mana to be good, and even then I don't know if it would be, i just know it would be annoying at 2 mana.
@Eliot_Draws
@Eliot_Draws 10 дней назад
for stats I generally round up so if a card had 1100 defence I would give it 3 toughness. Its just when stats reach 2500 or 3000, cards that can swing above become a fundamental part of why you consider running them since you see those values so often and some cards can only be destroyed by battle. In greater detail, for stat points over 2000 (points < 500 = 1, Exact 500 = 2) so with the stat conversion laid out 2500 flat comes out 2000 = 4 + 500 (past 2000) = 2 = 5 stat points also I like capping stat points to 8 attack or toughness as those are the highest stats on a card that is normally played unless it's the entire reason of the card. My Ideology on stats in yugioh are they don't really matter as much as effects until they pass 2000 as well as the fact that a cost 4 4/4 with an effect would see less play then a 3 cost 3/3 with the exact same effect.

He seems grixis to me as well, but I have to respect the choice. The card was built with three abilities in mind, and the author thought copying instants and sorceries was more of a red ability than a blue ability.
@garcardosotan6172
@garcardosotan6172 2 дня назад
I mean there is that. No way does a magician not have Blue in it's cost. Beyond that, his CMC would be higher cause that card is actually pretty insane starting with 5 Loyalty. Let me fix it for you real quick. CMC 7 4RUB Starting Loyalty 3 +1 create a hat token with defender and "When this card enters the battlefield, exile Dark magician till this card is removed from the battlefield." Players may attack Hat tokens as if they are attacking players or planeswalkers. -3: Copy the next instant or sorcery spell you cast this turn. -10: Destroy all non creature, non planeswalker, and non land permanents your opponents control. This cards, going to the graveyard, do not trigger effects. This card can be your commander. However, I want to stress, planeswalkers would not be the type for any of these. They are creatures thru and thru.

@axelostlund2348 День назад
@@garcardosotan6172 this, wouldn't work. If dark magician is exiled and returned he will be back to his starting loyalty, this planeswalker would thus never go beyond 4 loyalty. And plenty of magicians do not have blue in their cost, it depends how you portray them.

Your time twister would cause an instant draw. The one you show on screen says shuffle your *deck* into your *hand.* Which would be a totally funny effect, having your whole deck as your hand, but then you have to draw five, thus both players deck out

The last one bugs me a bit. I don't see how Rafflesia Seduction is red-green, it's a mono-red ability. The only thing green about it is the Plant type in my opinion.

I made it red because of the original wheel of fortune as well as the fact that red also discards to draw a moderate amount too.

Honestly, I think you should find cards to compare against each other, a simple example would be hearthstones novice engineer and magics elvish visionary. I say this because it would help you with proper wording in the games, also it'll help you learn more of the design spaces that each of these games have. The reason i bring this up especially for magic it has a lot of keywords that do things similar to other effects. An example would be Sphere of sapience it is a hearthstone weapon for 1 with 0/4 and the ability at the start of your turn look at your top card, you can put it on bottom lose 1 durability is essentially the mtg mechanic scry. Keyword for keyword though hearthstone has reborn/divine shield and magic has regenerate which is kind of a "hybrid" of the two mechanics.

Besides looking through every keyword one by one is there another method to finding proper syntax.

excavate isnt a keyword really, it may look like one but this is just the tcg trying to be fancy here since the phrasing used in ocg literally just says flip or turn over without any deeper meaning but its distinct from an older discontinued similar phrasing for an effect that was more or less the same thing but only ever used for cards on the field so tcg had to mirror this and go for a different word since this new usage of flipping over cards to look at them onyl applies to cards on top of deck but they went with ‘excavate’ instead of something less ornate sounding

probably a bit of nitpicking but a monster being able to preform a fusion summon through its own effect wouldnt be a contact fuse at all, its just a normal fusion procedure just like if you were using polymerization because despite the word 'fusion' in "contact fusion/fuse" its not a fusion summoning nor can it even pass as 1 either to the point that even if you're prevented from fusion summoning you can still contact fuse hence why all contact fusion never refer to the fusion monster being fusion summoned but simply being special summoned rather contact fusion is simply a colloquial term (no thx to the yugioh gx anime for coining it) for fusion monsters using their own built in summoning procedure similar to the other extra deck summoning mechanics work where the procedure is built into the game as a manual action the player may preform at any time during their main phase if the appropriate materials is available rather then something that needs to be initiated from an effect of another card so if chittering host or mishra actually is contact fused then their effect cannot even be applied since contact fusing isnt a fusion summon

Just throwing out ideas as a Magic player getting back into Hearthstone. Ive been wathcing some videos and noticing Hearthstone having problems with creatures that have activated abilities; what if for example Massacre Girl did "Battlecry: Get a Whirlwind with Echo". Typing this out I also remembered there are Titans which have activated abilities. Maybe you could also do a keyword called Active that means the creature can either activate the ability or attack that turn. Enjoying what I see.

I'll have to see the consensus on whether I can make custom keywords or not.

Very cool video concept, only card i see a problem with is Brisela since you wrote down Link 3 or lower summons get negated and destroyed as well…. Just because there is the number 3 in there doesn’t mean it’s the same as the magic effect😅. A link 3 monster would in fact be closer to a level 5-8 monster, the number in link monsters only means how many monster you need to sacrifice to summon it. So what your really looking for is link 1 monsters which already would be kinda op since link 1 are usually very important for strategies in yugioh
@Eliot_Draws
@Eliot_Draws Месяц назад
for link 3 it was more along the lines of how sprites listed rank and link 2's for it's effects and restrictions.
