So, this video is really cool, but I feel like the morph costs are overpriced for the most parts. For example, with morphing jar while the morph cost is 5, the cost in total is going to be 8 with you factor in the three generic mana to cast the creature itself. For these, you'd either want to make a new mechanic that is a 1-2 cheaper cost version of morph, or reduce the cost of the actual morph by 1-2 generic mana where possible.
@Eliot_Draws
@Eliot_Draws Месяц назад
I probably should have made the morph cost 1-2 mana cheaper.

I think that’s supposed to represent how weak and ineffective most flip cards are in Yu-Gi-Oh. Like they have good effects, but the fact you have to wait makes them almost completely irrelevant. The equivalence of that slow speed in magic would be a. High morph cost, one that at least requires waiting for the next turn to play it.

They are way to expensive, almost each card is unplayable.

Nice video! I'm mostly a magic player, so I'll share my thoughts on the cards. Penguin Soldier: Good overall, the Morph cost still feels high to my. Remember, you are paying the 3 mana to get soldier into play initially, it's allowed to be slightly cheaper than equivalent effects, at least if it were a high rarity card. I think 2UU would be appropriate here. Crystal Seer: The effect is really weak here. Again, having to pay the morph cost and then pay 1 blue to flip it makes it so bad, especially with it being a 1/1. I think you could make the ability an Anticipate (look at the top 3) instead and it would be fair. You could also give it the same Morph cost as Dragon Eye Savants and make it so that you just have to reveal a Blue card in your hand to flip it and keep the same effect, as it's only a 1/1, so it hits all the necessary requirements for that cycle Morphing Jar: Again, you seem to just be ignoring the cost of playing a Morph creature when deciding these costs. I think Morphing Jar could be 3 mana and be fine, that's a total of 6 mana for a wheel, which is fair. It's also interesting to decide if it should draw 5 or 7 cards. 5 is more faithful, but it essentially gives players a new hand, and the normal hand size in magic is 7, which is why most wheels draw 7. Tbh either way is fine, I kind of like it being slightly different to other wheel effects. Magnetic Mosquito: It destroying itself seems to be an unnecessary downside, but besides that, the card looks fine. Really interesting implementation of a niche card. Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter: Super interesting card here, tons to talk about. First off, being black makes some sense, as Black is very removal heavy. However, black doesn't really get the ability to remove artifacts, which Ryko here can. Also, seeing a Lightsworn not be White just completely messes with me. I think Ryko being White-Black, or at least costing white and black to flip face up, would make a ton of sense here. It also doesn't target with this wording, which is not something Magic really does, like at all. It would be breaking with how the card works in yugioh, but I just couldn't see Wizards implementing an effect like this without it targeting. The only non-targeting single target removal I can name off the top of my head is Council's Judgment, and that's specifically because of the voting mechanic it has. The introduction of non-targeting single target removal to magic would be a huge change, and honestly I could probably have like an hour long discussion about if it's a good idea of not. Not sure if I agree with making Ryko not target here, but either way, it's super interesting. Rafflesia Seduction: This seems like a good implementation. It could maybe be a bit cheaper, as Jeering Instigator was really weak in standard, but instant speed threatens are really busted. Overall, I understand the implementation here
@Eliot_Draws
@Eliot_Draws Месяц назад
Along the lines of ignoring morph costs my belief was you don't inherently lose tempo as you still get board presence albeit a bit high for no initial effect. However this seems to be a mistake on my part. for ryko I wasn't sure to add white to it as there is not really anything inherently white about it so I didn' add it. Also i was an error on my part but It's funny since Ryko has been change multiple times on whether this effect targets or not.
@pumkinswift8263
@pumkinswift8263 Месяц назад
@@Eliot_Draws Yeah the Ryko chanmge is funny. I will say for the morph cost, I do think you lose tempo because a 2/2 for 3 mana is bad. I think you can make the effects *slightly* better on rate to compensate, but not too much better. one mana on some effects is my feeling.

excavate isnt a keyword really, it may look like one but this is just the tcg trying to be fancy here since the phrasing used in ocg literally just says flip or turn over without any deeper meaning but its distinct from an older discontinued similar phrasing for an effect that was more or less the same thing but only ever used for cards on the field so tcg had to mirror this and go for a different word since this new usage of flipping over cards to look at them onyl applies to cards on top of deck but they went with ‘excavate’ instead of something less ornate sounding

8 Mana for a 2/1 that bounces 2 creatures? wew lad Crystal Seer does make sense as a common Morph creatures of a set, its not good, because you are paying 4 mana total and losing a 2/2 for a 1/1, but its real MTG design for Morphing Jar, 8 Mana for an immediate wheel effect attached to a creature in red is pretty spot on, but why sac the Jar? also, the ability formatting is not right, a colon means an activated ability but the "When" at the start indicates a triggered ability, it can't be both so, we have two options here either not sac the Jar, you would have to bounce the Jar and pay another 8 mana to use the effect again which doesn't seem like a bad deal or make the trigger ability grant the ability to sac it to wheel if you are really concerned about infinite mana combos with Cloudstone Curio doing infinite wheel effects "When Morphing Jar is turned face up, it gains "Sacrifice this permanent: Each player discards their hand, then draws five cards"" Magnetic Mosquito looks pretty good Ryko looks so weird in black, i think Green could be a better pick, and the formatting is also a bit weird, i know the YGO one states that they happen "simultaneously" but in MTG there shouldn't be a problem with a "then, you may also destroy target nonland, nonartifact permanent", i would also completely rule out land removal, its very bad seen and it would make Ryko WAY too versatile at removing any kind of permanents, and removing artifact removal or making it green, because black doesn't has artifact removal Rafflesia Seduction sounds good, 7 mana for a creature steal, its a bit weird to see a steal in green, but i guess stuff like Rubinia exists?
@Gich101
@Gich101 19 дней назад
All of your effects work in the color pie. I would reduce your morph costs or buff the spells. Take Magnetic Mosquito for example. It should destroy all artifacts for 8 mana (i would also throw in enchantments because only artifacts for 8 mana is expensive).

@JuniperHatesTwitterlikeHandles Месяц назад
@@Eliot_Draws I don't want to be mean, the videos aren't bad by any means, but when you state it so 'confidently' while also being an obvious beginner to the game of magic, it comes off as pretty arrogant. The word 'would' also slightly misrepresent's what you're doing, yugioh cards, ported directly into magic, _would_ have 0 mana cost, huge power/toughnesses, and a lot of very strange rules text. You're more designing magic cards strongly inspired by yugioh cards rather then porting cards over.
@Eliot_Draws
@Eliot_Draws Месяц назад
@@JuniperHatesTwitterlikeHandles For the language I will try to convey my level of understanding of other card games more clearly like "As someone newer to magic blank would become..." or " as someone less familiar to magic converting this card gets us..." In the end designing magic cards strongly inspired by yugioh cards rather then porting cards over is translating the intent of cards between the two card games rather then direct translations as those cards would be confusing to use and understand. Converting cards from other card games will always be thing left up for other peoples interpretation. And while other people may have stronger reason for why somethings need to be changed its more of an art for fun then something too exact.

Just throwing out ideas as a Magic player getting back into Hearthstone. Ive been wathcing some videos and noticing Hearthstone having problems with creatures that have activated abilities; what if for example Massacre Girl did "Battlecry: Get a Whirlwind with Echo". Typing this out I also remembered there are Titans which have activated abilities. Maybe you could also do a keyword called Active that means the creature can either activate the ability or attack that turn. Enjoying what I see.

your cards are good and the reason for each balance decision are sound, good job. Personally I would have let the mosquito flip for 2WW since it only destroy artifact creatures, but it's not THAT deep anyway. Again, good job.

I see a flaw in your reasoning in the gameplay translation from YGO to MTG: Flip monsters are 100% defensive. You shouldn't be able to attack with a facedown mosnter, but be able to block as normal. So, they should have 0 power and some thoughtnes. I think a 0/2 face down should be fine. but that's really weak for a 3 cost morph. It should have it's own keyword, which cost either 2 or 1 to play facedown. Now, you have the "on combat, flip" from YGO's game mechanics. So, you should be able to flip the creature for its "flip cost", like any morph-like effect, but to keep the gameplay flavor, if the creature is blocking, you should be able to flip it for a reduced cost. That's the tricky part, how much is discounted, idk. That's what testing is for.
@Eliot_Draws
@Eliot_Draws Месяц назад
While flip monsters are inherently defensive I still think stripping the ability to attack is a bit much however having reduced flip cost when blocking is a good Idea.

I would make it a 1 blue 1 generic cost 1/1 with boast - 2 blue 3 generic Skip your opponents next draw step. Return "Yata-Gurrasu" to it's owners hand. And Flying, since it's a bird. either this or making the return to hand effect mandatory with haste since it will only last until the end of your turn and increasing it's mana cost to 2 blue, 1 red, and 2 generic - boast - 1 blue 1 generic Skip your opponents next draw step.

Ryko should not have a white/black hybrid mana as a cost or a morph cost of 2 generics, 1 white and one black, I say this because it is a LIGHTsworn with a LIGHT attribute

that line of reasoning has gotten me in trouble before as neither single target destruction nor self mill is really associated to white however hybrid mana would be a good compromise.
