My two cents: When I prepared for a Tamriel Rebuilt playthrough in 2020, I ended up using Oldwind. It never crashed on me during 80h of play and back then, Oldwind with MGE looked far superior to OpenMW distant land. It was an easy choice when side by side. But it was 4 years ago.

One more thing - MUSE2 with Tamriel Rebuilt doesnt work on OpenMW, which is a deal breaker.

Thats because this is a bethesda softworks game not a bethesda game studios game. Everyone that comes here should go support the kick starter for wayward realms. The orginal dev team is making a grand rpg. The map is 5400× bigger than skyrim. They are taking tge lessons learned from mistakes in daggerfall and making a basically even better daggerfall in unreal 5. The Wayward Realms.

Until OpenMW or compatible mod allows the user to press a hotkey to quickly loot between container to inventory, I will never switch. The "UI Expansion" mod on Oldwind allows you to swap from container to inventory by pressing and holding alt and clicking on the item you want to loot. This tiny quality of life feature is everything to me, I hate the tedious nature of dragging and dropping items. In addition to UI Expansion, I use "More QuickLoot" which is a Fallout 4 looting menu that requires lua to work. When you're standing in front of a container and looking at it, it gives you a floating menu of all the items in the container that you can use your scroll wheel to select items and press E to take. It doesn't stop the flow of the game and makes looting a much more enjoyable feature. It sounds like a tiny QoL feature but it seriously cuts down on the tedium that is Morrowind looting. As for crashes while playing, I think that is severely overstated for a near vanilla run with MCP installed. I have about 40 hours in my latest playthrough and 1 crash. Is it 1 more crash than I'd like? Yes. Is it enough for me to give up these game saving QoL mods for OpenMW? The answer is decisively no.

I remember upgrading my PC, not to play Cyberpunk or RDR2 at a higher framerate, but to play Morrowind as massively modded as possible. I had an RTX 2060 Super beforehand, thinking it'd be enough, but following graphical enhancers that are very basic, my 2060 Super was pushed to its limit somehow with Morrowind of all things. The game looked better, but GPU utilization was almost 100 and i was barely hitting 30 fps. Now I have a 3060 TI, downloaded the Path of the Incarnate modlist, and my 3060 Ti can barely hit 40 fps in cities. Amazing how a game from 2002 can be a better graphics benchmark than Cyberpunk 2077, which I run more or less fine as long as ray tracing is on on lowest setting when enabled.

I believe that the degree that Daggerfall Unity mods improve the game is leagues higher than what Skyrim mods do to improve that game. Merely because there is SO MUCH to improve in Daggerfall's base game. Sure the imagery isn't super realistic but there is so much more to improve on.

This is a really bad video. User is playing heavily modded. Pretty much not even the real game. And keeps referencing other mod fixes to the game. All to over complicate basic info. OpenMW functions similarly to an emulator. The retail game with no mods at all is full of glitches. And in fact, hardly playable. Even this aside, the resolution is low and visuals are very limited no matter what. This is default retail. So IDK why this video keeps mentioning mods. The point is that the base retail version needs to be fixed just to function properly. This is accomplished with OpenMW. And only 6 essential mods. Technically, only 3 are mandatory for the base game of the year edition with both expansions activated. PfP, Optimization Patch, and Expansion Delay. PfP is a patch that fixes thousands of glitches. Optimization Patch makes the game run as smooth as possible. Expansion Delay fixes a glitch with the Tribunal expansion that presumes you already beat the game. So you can get attacked by assassins from level 1 if you have the expansion activated. The mod simply delays this single issue with the expansion until later in the game. (Although there are cheese exploits that take advantage of this glitch. Therefore, will not with if this mod fixes it.) The fourth, UMOPP, fixes the 8 plugins that come with the game. These plugins are like DLC content that are also activated by the user. Just like the 2 expansions. The last 2 mods are unofficial developer updates. Morrowind Advanced and Affresh. These were released as mods by the developers to update the game. Just like any official game content update they do add content and alter the retal release. However, these are important updates that fix insufficiencies with the game. Because, for whatever reason, they could not be implemented at the time the game was released. Advanced overall purpose, among multiple improvements, increases the creature tier. This not being properly developed for retail was the reason the character can feel too overpowered in later stages of the game. Affresh improves the questing system. Morrowind was actually not fully complete when released. Despite being known as a great game. It's not that this mod fixes much that was broken. It's more that it is a fix that applies what was missing. OpenMW is pretty much as explained in a convoluted manner in this video that goes overboard on mods for no reason. You start with a fresh installation of the actual retail game. Then install OpenMW, and set the location of the game files. OpenMW then functions as the launcher/emulator for the game. So you do nothing at all with the main game files. They're just on your system. You instead run OpenMW. It functions as a launcher to run the game. It has settings to fix the resolution, scale the UI properly, and other essential options. The 6 mods can then be installed. To do so you will need to install Mod Organizer 2.5 (which manages and installs the mods) and Python (api requirement). Then download and add a plugin to Mod Organizer for OpenMW. Last create an account on the mod website. Which will easily connect to Mod Organizer. Those 6 mods can now be downloaded directly into Mod Organizer. Which is used to install them. Then after they're installed, use the button to export them into OpenMW. The game now functions extremely well and runs buttery smooth. You can also add in Morrowind Enhanced Texture mod for a general graphics improvement. But these few mods are all you need as absolute necessities that are not some nonsense or qol. There's currently no known functional single mod that overhauls all the graphics to make the game look beautiful. Some users just add multiple different beautification mods. Which seems to be the case with this video that goes unreasonably overboard on mods.

I'm gearing up for my 3th attempt to get into Morrowind. I have huge FOMO when it comes to choosing "new" versions of old games because I do want the original feel of the game, but man is it difficult to get into Morrowind. Fallout 1 and 2 were modern masterpieces compared to this. This video has eased my mind a bit. So thanks!

2024 Update: As noted, 0.49 has most all of the features in MGE/MWSE now and although there are still some very interesting mods for exclusively for MWSE, it's just not worth it for 99.9% of players. Many of the better mods have a LUA equivalent in OpenMW. More importantly, your average player won't experience... basically "Crashwind" playing OpenMW. If you're the person who wants to mod Morrowind radically and try to bring it up to modern standards as much as you can, OpenMW. What nobody talks about is that before OpenMW reached the state it's in today, "oldwind" modding consisted of spending literally days trying to mod the game to perfection only to find the game often would crash every other silt strider ride you took. Super fun. That being said... advanced users can still have a superior experience running through MGE but it's not easy. It involves numerous patches and a convoluted method of getting ENBoost to work with Morrowind and MGE which dramatically decreases the crashes and similarly improved the frame rate. The result looks superior (as of this post, I expect that to change in the future) and allows you some mods that just aren't ported to OpenMW yet that are pretty cool. As a hardcore outlier, I keep an install with both. OpenMW is my sort of "modern concept art Morrowind" and "oldwind" is a loaded up fantasy-fest where lore-friendly isn't always the primary concern. I do feel like the continued "insistence" of MGE is sort of holding Morrowind as a game and community back at this point, though.
