Note: As of the latest nightly builds for 0.49, OpenMW *does* have support for complex lua mods and shader support. The vast majority of mods most people will want to use now have a version for OpenMW or another modder has recreated the same concept with a different implementation. There are, of course, notable exceptions. Like Ashfall.

@@Bakanlink I wouldn't know, survival mods aren't really my kinda thing. I also doubt it. Ashfall's predecessor Frostwind is *somewhat* compatible with OpenMW. (You can't chop wood with an axe for example.) Taddeus' Necessities of Morrowind is an older mod with a fairly decent survival feature-set and fully compatible. The problem is that additional effort is required to make it compatible with mods that add new food items and the like (such as Tamriel Rebuilt.) Edit: There is a new simple needs mod called Basic Needs for OpenMW which adds basic exhaustion, food, and thirst mechanics. It requires the development build of OpenMW though.

Idk how anyone could think there's anything difficult about openmw, MO2 is probably the best and easiest to use mod organiser and almost everything can be installed on it. Installing almost everything is the same as modding skyrim or fallout nv and fallout4, and those games are crazy easy to mod.

I install mods on Linux the OpenMW way, .cfg edits and all, and honestly it's not hard in reality, it's just a bit intimidating at first. A bit of practice and you'll end up preferring to edit the .cfg file over using a GUI interface.

After spending a ridiculous amount of time with open mw trying to set it up and get it to run well i have come to the conclusion you are better off using the morrowind graphics and soudns overhaul. Its simple it installs, it works and looks better than this, at least it has proper groundcover support and does not destroy perfomance due to groudncover or the idiotic water shaders and draw distance and it has much better mods in it that actually work unlike open mw and you dont have to use open mw's awful content installation ui and you get to play at double the fps , sure it crashes but what is the point of not crashing when the game goes from over 100 fps to 20 fps constantly? Open mw sucks, its a buggy broken unfinished engine incompatible with anything and most people dont use it for that reason.

It's just so time consuming to install mods. I've been wanting to follow the Total Overhaul guide but I gave up after like 30 mods in. Creating so many folders, choosing the right folders in the zip files and so on. It's so much faster with MO2.

". . .you can install and uninstall mods in the middle of a playthrough." Holy god. Why didn't I know about this when I tried MW for the first time last year? I just came back after missing the game and have no idea what mods I had installed or how to retrieve them. Basically just said "screw it" and started over. I played through the main story on the 0.46.0 version and while I had to cap my framerate at 30 (putting it higher was janky and I would lose frames in certain areas) the newer version runs WAAAAAAY better. I actually can turn the view distance all the way up and I can also enable actors at a very far distance as well and the game runs great. I'd say especially with this recent release "oldwind" is definitely the inferior way to play without question.

Great video my dude. Morrowind is the one TES game that enchanted me ever since I first experienced the Dragonborn DLC for Skyrim, which I've actually ended up enjoying more than Skyrim itself. Recently version 0.48.0 dropped, and I would imagine that it is now a great time to finally get into the game (and at some point, Daggerfall via Daggerfall Unity as well). I've read that the base game has been essentially feature complete for a long time now, with just some kinks remaining, but it's the editor that's holding back the so-called 1.0 release due to it still being alpha. You're right about the crashes, back when only Legendary Edition was around they eventually made me just abandon the game after 800 hours in as after 30mins of gameplay or so it would just CTD. It wasn't unplayable but it was disruptive enough to not want to deal with it anymore, and there was also the matter of constantly dealing with load orders, bashed/merged patches, and mod conflicts... I simply had enough ultimately, and abandoned the game... I'm still getting into the occassional Skyrim mood since I loved that game, but all the aforementioned issues remind me of why I quit in the first place. I spent way more time sorting technical issues than actually playing, it wasn't worth it anymore.

I was debating this for weeks now, since I've only ever truly played Morrowind once (main quest + lots of side stuff) long ago, and I LOVE modding my games. The thing that convinced me the most (in your video, that is) is the distant land & landmass mod support. Quite honestly, MGE-XE was extremely laggy and jittery even on vvanderfell, and having to jump through hoops to make distant land work, only to have it run at 20 fps on my modern rig was... underwhelming. But back then I simply sighed and went with it, because the community told me that OpenMW was "crappy and lacked features". The promise of Lua mods was great, yes, but I don't remember one situation where I couldn't have lived without them. Installing the total overhaul list as I type this!

There's also the fact that it has a VR branch and a Multiplayer branch! You can now co-op with someone in Morrowind (or blame them for all your crimes). For me, OpenMW is the best way to play for many reasons, but crashes are one of the biggest issue. With all the fixes and external programs, I still had to save often and not really enjoy the game because I had no idea when Oldwind would crash. It tore me out of the game and made enjoying it more difficult. With OpenMW I had get used to the fact that it wouldn't crash. Never had it crash once, and I've been using it for years. I have no reason not to use it! Great video and I'm glad someone is talking about OpenMW! Perhaps next it would be good to show off the differences between MGE XE and OpenMW. One major flaw no one talks about is the fact that your shadow supercedes the terrain shadows in the game, which can be a bit jarring. OpenMW doesn't suffer from such a bug. There's the lighting as you mentioned as well, and the reflections on water are far better on OpenMW than they are in Oldwind with MGE XE.

2024 Update: As noted, 0.49 has most all of the features in MGE/MWSE now and although there are still some very interesting mods for exclusively for MWSE, it's just not worth it for 99.9% of players. Many of the better mods have a LUA equivalent in OpenMW. More importantly, your average player won't experience... basically "Crashwind" playing OpenMW. If you're the person who wants to mod Morrowind radically and try to bring it up to modern standards as much as you can, OpenMW. What nobody talks about is that before OpenMW reached the state it's in today, "oldwind" modding consisted of spending literally days trying to mod the game to perfection only to find the game often would crash every other silt strider ride you took. Super fun. That being said... advanced users can still have a superior experience running through MGE but it's not easy. It involves numerous patches and a convoluted method of getting ENBoost to work with Morrowind and MGE which dramatically decreases the crashes and similarly improved the frame rate. The result looks superior (as of this post, I expect that to change in the future) and allows you some mods that just aren't ported to OpenMW yet that are pretty cool. As a hardcore outlier, I keep an install with both. OpenMW is my sort of "modern concept art Morrowind" and "oldwind" is a loaded up fantasy-fest where lore-friendly isn't always the primary concern. I do feel like the continued "insistence" of MGE is sort of holding Morrowind as a game and community back at this point, though.

MWSE-Lua mods are too good to pass up for me. Extra performance is meaningless to me if I'm just not having fun with the actual gameplay mechanics. And lua mods have spoiled the shit out of me. Ashfall being the primary culprit. That being said, I finally setup a base OpenMW installation and have it ready in anticipation of the upcoming lua support. OpenMW is definitely the future, and it's getting closer to being the decisive place to play Morrowind. But it's not there yet.
@rosenrot6871
@rosenrot6871 2 года назад
This is my exact sentiment right now. Old Morrowind might have it's flaws but so many gameplay and QoL mods that require MWSE makes it hard to pass up on. Also I've found running only a few mods in OpenMW with the distant terrain set to the same cells that I would have in MGE XE (5) yields pretty bad performance. But maybe this new method they've implemented addressed that. Either way, OpenMW isn't the most forgiving on my old Gigabyte 980. Also interesting when Mr. Moonshine pointed out his experience with Skyrim LE vs SE. I've found both games to have stability issues, with crashes being the result of mod conflicts (which will happen on either when having a heavy modded build). Also Skyrim Special Edition ENBs still pale in comparison to how Oldrim ones look, even 5 years later and they still are missing features from the ENB binaries of Oldrim.

Although, given how old of a game it is, and how all I've done on oldwind is piss about in the starting town and a little bit beyond without progressing anything and not getting crashes because of that limited experience, already being on the fence anyway this video's just making me consider that a few quests might be worth the better... everything.

Just curious (because I absolutely love your mod build specifically) How many of your mods are on the overhaul list? & are they all available on Nexus mods? (apologies ahead of time if this is an obvious question) Im very new to this
@MizterMoonshine

I didn't use an overhaul guide, I did my modlist myself. I think most of them are on the nexus, though I have changed the filenames of some of them for better readability in case I forget what a certain mod does later. If you can't find a mod just give me a shout.

The new OpenMW update was what I wanted and more, not only did it implement a feature I wanted: generating distant land so that you don't just see nothing before loading sometimes But not only content with that, OpenMW 0.47 added a highly improved third camera that breathed new life into my gameplay, I really only play Morrowind in third person now and that's thanks to OpenMW. I definitely recommend it.

I've been using OpenMW for the past 3 years and I can say without a doubt that it's a way better playing experience than Oldwind. I actually completed Morrowind and its expansions for the first time on a single character using OpenMW. I was never able to do that because the frequent crashes and black screen bug would render long playing sessions impossible. I prefer to play with vanilla-friendly texture enhancers (like intelligent textures), but I'm aware that OpenMW can handle higher resolutions brilliantly. The OpenMW team has hinted at lua support coming in the near future so when 0.48 rolls out there's no reason not to use OpenMW instead of Oldwind.

The only drawback is no support for mods that use the Morrowind Script Extender. I wish there was an OpenOB version of this engine, or that Oblivion and the script extenders for both games could be implemented natively.

Hiya! I've followed your load order pretty faithfully I believe and I've run into an issue where I get quite a bit of stuttering when my PC walks around. I believe I have a rig beefy enough to support this load order and I suspect the issue has something to do with the physics as the stuttering always occurs when that line in the F3 menu dips. I was just wondering if you ran into a similar issue and if you had any suggestions on how to edit the settings file to help alleviate it. Thanks in advance!

The only crash I have encountered is twice when crossing a particular bridge under Old Skar in Ald Ruhn. It might have something to do with the tamriel rebuilt mod. There is still the annoying bug of npcs falling through the floor in Vivec, but overall it's a far better experience.

I've been playing with OpenMW so long that I grew completely used to the preview and diagonal movement of the 3rd person camera. It's crazy to me that the base game didn't have it. Also entering buildings doesn't require a loading screen. 0% loading screen, 100% immersion.

Great video! I am trying to install the mod list but I had some issues as I am not very familiar with openmw, I am grateful for any advice! First, is the load order inverted? I see you have Tribunal and Bloodmoon at the bottom. Second, many of the mods at the bottom of the list require TR_data but that only comes much higher up. I was wondering if the priorities are correct? Also, when I try to play it the water doesn't seem modded at all, it looks like vanilla Morrowind unlike your video. Grateful for any tips on how to address this!
@MizterMoonshine
@MizterMoonshine 2 года назад
Yes the list is inverted. It's the way MO2 generates the file for some reason. As for the water you need to turn on the shader in the options. I have one of the modded water shaders available here www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/50247
