I couldn’t tell if your wobble box was moving and rattling more than normal or not, but it seemed it might be. Look those 6 bearings over, particularly the drive bearing. You might have a bad wobble bearing, and you don’t want to wear through the race into the bearing housing. You would probably hear it slapping when the sickle is running, if you know what to listen for. The sickle will run quite a while with a bad bearing, it doesn’t just stop working.
I have NH 451. I have had to change bearings, blades. It is good cutting equipment but parts are expensive. How did u get urs to lift so high? I had to do same on my rock guards
We've had ours for 5 years and run it all the time , have wore out a few sets of tires already , they are street legal here ! It has been stone reliable and it goes up all the trails the 1000s will do just a little slower maybe 😊
I needed something to pick up leaves so I went to the JD dealer. Mine is a 2007 x540 also. I got the 47" snowblower, tiller, 14 bu Powerflow, and cart. Brand new everything was about 11k plus tax. My wife about killed me. But she came around loving the tiller and snowblower. My seat looked like yours, but since the plastic looked deformed, I just put on a new aftermarket seat. Still have original tires. But on second battery. Stays in the garage, so it looks good, no weathering. Wash it once a year. Love the Kawasaki engines in JD. Neighbors is on his 3rd B&S engine in his mower. Blew out the Cul-de-sac when the city's snowplow broke down Fun.
2021 I set out buy myself a brand new JD, I had enough cash to buy a nice new X300 series tractor. But first I went on the My Tractor forum to see which 300 to get and they all said use that same money to buy a nicely used and cared for X500 series from a trusted implement dealer and never look back. So I got me a nice X540 with the power assist bagger with 300hrs on it and I never looked back . One of the best purchases I`ve ever made.
My biggest complaint woth mine is the sagging rear suspension. Gets hung up quite often, and it gets stuck, because of that issue. And yes, I wish it had turf mode. I wouldn't buy it again.
I’ve pulled my hair out on mine for 2years trying to stop the surging after it warms up. I’ve replaced a lot of the parts not the carb itself, but everything else. Shielding the fuel lines helped some. It will run fine for an hour then start dying out surging.
I have a x534 with hydraulic lift deck and this is the video i searched for for hours. So for others with x534, because x534 videos are few and far between, ill keep typing x534 here so hopefully RU-vid search will bring other x534 owners here. Awesome video that applies to the deck on the x534 also!!
I’ve had my X540 now for 17 years I use it mainly for mowing our 1.5 acre meadow 👍 it’s been a fantastic machine and so reliable 🙏. May it live for another 17 years.
Nice job - done this for years with my 445 and it can be a challenge. Would love to have one of the drive over decks. BTW - you have a beautiful piece of property. Thanks hope to see your channel grow.
Is there an after market updraft carb for a 3020 gas, my zenith carb is trashed, and a replacement is like 1,100 dollars, or even a universal carb that you can make work?
They all wear pretty quick cause they drag on the rotor they never release all the way kinda a weird design. I’ve replaced mine a lot it’s always the one pad the other pad looks new
Awesome review, I’m buying a 2014 Yamaha Viking 700 $4500 clean title Camo not fun of the camo . I like the green one more but the price is good has brand new tires and rebuild engine. 14600 miles king of scary but rebuilt engine
Appreciate the video. I had Adjusted the cable free play and still no brake. I was about to change the pads even though they weren't terrible. Decided to check RU-vid and glad I did. This adjustment gave me plenty of brake. Thanks again.
I just happen to be dealing with the same thing right now. Thank you sir. Thats awesome. This will be very helpfull👍fields over my head. Had enough time for that rebuild lol! Great video!
Hi! I'm thinking about buying a used JD 540. It has 800 hours of work. In your opinion, is it worth buying a used JD 540? How is the operation of this model? Emergency model? Does it perform rather well? Recommend purchase?
I took the plunge and bought a 2021 EPS. I REALLY like it. The lack of turf mode is the only thing I don't like, but if you just start out going straight and not turn right away its not to bad.
How did your 450 work after rebuilding the cutterbar? After watching your video and explanation about the hold downs and ledger plates I agree with you. My 451 has the same number of them as your 450 but one more rock guard to make it 28. I saw that rebuild kit you mentioned and you are correct about it not being cheap. I'm also not sure I want to change the spacing of the plates and hold downs. New Holland had them set up that way for a reason.
You can bet one thing, I will NOT spend another penny at Webb. I ordered under serrated cutter bar with knives and a cutter bar rebuild for my 7’ 451. I was missing a high hold down to clear the end with the head and the cutter knives were over serrated. It doesn’t matter that after two or three phone calls and two or three weeks I finally got what I wanted, it’s poor business practices on their end. And it meant three weeks delay on reassembling my mower. The entire experience was a pain and I’d rather spend more and get better service
And you can bet one thing more, the adjustable hold downs are garbage. The piece that should push down on the hold down bends before the bolt even gets to the torque spec! Would be best if that piece was harder steel
@TheSouthViewFarm~ THANK YOU for this video content! It's infinitely easier to learn how to remove the deck on the X540 by watching YOU do it! My parents own an X540 and my Dad had always done all the maintenance and repairs it needed over the years. (He was a Master Tool & Dye Maker at John Deere Plow Planter in Moline, IL for 31 years.) However, over the last 2 years his health has failed significantly, making it impossible for him to do any of those tasks. Last summer, I went through the X540 and changed the spark plugs, fuel filter, oil filter, air filter, battery, removed & deep cleaned the radiator, replaced a headlamp & light and shop vacuumed out all the nooks and crannies of the engine where mice had drug in pieces of corn and tried to nest. I had NEVER done ANY of those things on my own..... But I guess all the years of watching my Dad work on cars, tractors, and engines in general, taught me everything I needed to do it successfully. I was so proud of myself! They hired a crew to mow their 5 acres the past few years as Dad is now 83 yrs old and my Mom is 79. However, my Mom uses the X540 with a small cargo trailer hitched on the back to drive the property and plant flowers, pick up dead tree limbs/sticks, carry the garbage, and do to the mailbox. I live about 600 miles away from them so I wanted the X540 to be reliable for her. Around Christmas time she mentioned that there was something wrong with the mower deck, it was collapsed on one side and she wasn't able to use the tractor anymore. I told her I would come home and fix it......but my Dad got it in his head that he could fix it. Apparently he was able to get it all disassembled (he can barely walk with a walker and has frequent falls, so don't ask me how he got up and down off the barn floor!). Needless to say, once it was disassembled, he was too weak and exhausted to recall how to reassemble it, so the deck and all the parts are still laying on the barn floor. I am going home for a visit in the next month and getting it all put back together again in on the top of my "To Do" list. At least now because of your video I have a better idea of how the deck is supposed to attach and detach, specifically on the X540!! Thank you for making this video! ~~Christy~~
Thanks for posting that. i was a little intimidated w/ the replacement process before your video. JD now wants $ 765.00 for that starter, ebay $ 65.00, w/ free shipping. Guess where i bought the starter.. thanks again

9/26/2022 Great video, very informative, hope your mum is doing ok, I have a question for you? How many hours on your machine? I’m currently looking at a 2013 with 800 hours
I have two different sturdy traps but somehow Raccoons managed to escape multiple times. They get away from the very corner bottom of the doors. Any suggestions?
This was such a helpful, timely video. I had purchased a used X540 a few years back which was difficult to start. After 5-6 seconds it would likely start but it kept getting worse. It wasn't until you posted this video I felt confident enough to order a new starter and replace it. It was a frustrating experience, but I'm delighted as the tractor now starts perfectly! Thank you!
@@thesouthviewfarm6187so ultimately what did you do to fix your issue,I am / my mechanic friend is having problems keeping tractor running like it's not getting enough consistent gas to stay running.
