This is a very detailed video on how to build a deck around a pool. We start by digging the holes, building the frame, screwing down the decking, building stairs, a swing gate, and access door, lattice and frame, baluster railing and treating the new wood with my favorite CWF cedar tone color. The deck is built partially around the pool. We used treated lumber on the entire project. We used ACQ approved screws and nails.

+Denny Grimes I figured it out! At the point of the radius just make a mark on either side of the board it won't be 100% exact but it'll be hidden under the coping. If u have to cut along the coping it will still b simple aswell, cause the coping isn't really sharp but mellow and the cuts will b nice.

Do NOT attach the deck to the pool or you will regret it when trying to put the winter cover on. Leave about 1/2 inch to 1 inch clearance to stick the winter cover in between or it WILL blow off or rip. I have experience with this. It is basically impossible to have the water bags hold it down or rope to tie it across the deck, the wind will get under it and ruin it. (if you live in a wintry area like Northeast USA)

He didn’t do it by himself. He had 2 helpers. Extra hands. When I have help my ambition is greater. No help some work can be difficult. Try to plan it. Go over the actions in your head. Try it. I installed a 21’ above ground pool watching so many RU-vid videos. I hardly had any help. Most of my help came when the pool was done. They helped me get wet. Preparation is key.

Absolutely! A pool itself does nothing but hold water. If I can hold water for $400 instead of $4000 I can afford a LOT better deck and\or pump & filter. Why do people think the deck, pump & filter should cost less than the pool? The pool ...holds water. The pump & filter .....determines how clean the water is, how much time, frustration, headache and work it costs to keep the water clean AND it can even effect the cost of chemicals over time. The deck ....it protects the pool, supports the weight of everyone on it, gives you a space for laying out, grilling, eating, all sorts of stuff. It's like saying "I want a Corvette. The engine costs $5000 so I can only spend $3000 on everything else. No, "Everything else" is what makes the difference between a noisy paperweight, and an awesome experience in car form. Same with a pool.

dev1lsadv0cate , Some items in the video are overlooked. There are joist hangers and lag screws installed to national code. One thing that could be missing for the IRC ( International Building Code ) is the notching of the posts. In place of notching the posts, most inspectors will accept installation of Z brackets depending on his attitude. They are designed to carry the the floor load and are installed on the bearing outside bands. Google Z brackets and get the spec sheet to show your inspector they are equivalent to notching the posts.

I have 30 years framing and building experience and I have to say that this is one of the best quality decks I have seen built. Very good job i do say. Only little thing i saw was it didn't look like enough space between pool and deck for a winter cover to attach. Other than that I was happy to watch your video. Great job sir.

@craigheffernan Nice job! I am looking to do a similar build myself but I was a little confused about the posts. It looks like you dropped them in the holes and then started framing without cementing them in. It looked like when you got the framing squared you shoveled sand in the holes. At what point did you pour concrete? Thanks!
@Deckbuilding
@Deckbuilding 4 месяца назад
Depending on where you live is how deep you dig your holes. The holes are dug below the frost line. Then a concrete footing is mixed in the bottom of the hole around 8 to 10” deep. You let that harden overnight then you set all your posts on top. Once all the framing and posts are positioned you backfill with the dirt you removed earlier packing it tightly and mounding it above grade. You do not fill with concrete because of two reasons. 1 is the concrete will lift the entire deck upwards when there is frost. 2 is the post could rot from trapped moisture between the post and concrete. There are other videos I have on my channel that go into more detail about deck footings. Thanks for watching
@JustinAshworth
@JustinAshworth 8 лет назад
This video is great! Just one question about the footings. I noticed you just put concrete in the bottom of the holes and placed the PT 4x4s directly on top of the concrete. There is no end to opinions on putting wood directly on concrete. Is this something which can only be done in certain climates? Is there a reason you didn't concrete up to ground level and install a post anchor?
@crewzero3586
@crewzero3586 3 года назад

@mrfixitusa6165

Yeah, I've seen several different methods over the years. He is doing it "different" than most, but it isn't really "wrong". These days, a "good" deck just isn't done without some lag screws\bolts and quality deck screws. (And in many cases, metal hanger Ms & brackets) But for many years this kind of deck framing was used and lasted 20-30 years. When I was 10, we had a deck built by a well known pro, and he used near identical methods, except he was real "old school" and did EVERYTHING with a framing hammer. That deck lasted a little over 25 years, with nothing but a the step treads & rails replaced somewhere around the 20 year mark. My friends and I abused abd beat that deck to death for the first 10 years! It was an "anvil" a work bench, base\backstop for a propane torch when we heated up matchbox cars to make them look "wrecked". It was our "climbing wall" or "cliff face" when we were "mountain climbing" or roping up & down the side & rails as "Navy seals boarding an enemy ship" and everything else we could think of. The only thing we ever did to it was after 8-9 years or so, hammer in a few nail pops on some of the deck boards, or replace a few of those nails with screws. But like I said, even that was after a good 8-9 years of abuse and adventures.
@mrfixitusa6165
@mrfixitusa6165 4 года назад
@@ChalkyHonky well, they did use screws in some if the deck boards. They even used the good ones, Torx head deck screws! But I too was wondering why they didn't use screws in some if the framing, with modern battery tools and all, it's a lot easier to use screws these days than it used to be.
@ChalkyHonky
@ChalkyHonky 4 года назад
@@mrfixitusa6165 that framing will twist and warp. Nice deck until that happens! I screw every deck I build no nails i had a deck board shrink so bad last month it broke the screws off
@mrfixitusa6165
@mrfixitusa6165 4 года назад
@@ChalkyHonky I mean... I'm with ya. IMO, nails are only good for holding something in place long enough to get the screws in, or the adhesive to dry. They're just another form of a "clamp." LOL But I also know that with the right methods, "nail only" decks can be built to last. I mean really, there was a time when Craftsmen didn't use ANY kind of fasteners, screws, nails, bolts none of it. They built things by understanding the wood, wood grain, wood movement and build everything from furniture, to buildings to boats, using nothing but joinery and maybe some wedges or wood pegs. Using some of those techniques & knowledge, it's entirely possible to build a deck without a single screw, that will last just as long & strong as the best modern practices that meet the most stringent codes. When I was 10 we had an old school (he was "old school" back in 1984!) carpenter build a deck for us. I know NOTHING about construction, woodworking, framing or any of it, yet even to my 10 year old eyes it was very obvious this guy knew what he was doing and was really a master of his craft. He used a hand saw more efficiently than I've seen many people use a circular saw. He never used a nail gun or a screw on that deck. He hammered every nail by hand and used some joinery in key places. That deck lasted over 25 years before the 3rd owners tore it down to build a larger, covered deck. We didn't even have so much as a nail pop on a deck board for a good 8-9 years. It went over 15 years before we had to replace anything, and that was just a few stair treads ...that I had used as an "anvil" many times over the years of being a wild rambunctious kid. We beat the snot out if that deck & rails but his craftsmanship never failed ....at least not for the 20 years we owned it. And the only screws that were ever in it, were the ones I put in a few deck boards after 8-9 years of use & abuse.

@Deckbuilding
@Deckbuilding 5 месяцев назад
When I mixed the concrete in the hole the concrete sorta self levels. I do secrete it off more level with the end of a 2x4 to get it pretty close. The concrete in the bottom of the hole should be smoothed out and level incase you have to move and adjust the post within the hole.
