This channel was created to explore the MTG 3 Card Blind format as a community.
3 Card Blind is an MTG format where players submit decks consisting of only 3 cards. Players cannot lose the game from decking out, and all randomness from the game is removed. Follow this channel to learn more!
Someone just told me about 3cb. Submitted my first list. As a noob I expect to lose to some of the more interactive or all-in strategies, but hopefully do ok vs more long-game match up.
I was hoping to see fewer bannings tbh. Feels like the last couple months the community just bans whatever does well instead of building a meta around it. Not saying we shouldn’t be banning cards, but I thought this month was really healthy and didn’t need many bans.
I want to agree and say cards shouldn't go up for ban vote unless they're basically unstoppable or do well two months in a row. Although on the other hand, with how fast new cards are getting released, two months for a ban might be too long. I see the advantages of both approaches, but would personally go with the two months good for a ban vote.
I think that's just the nature of the format. In Modern or Legacy, it's fine if the meta stagnates a little as long as it's diverse and the gameplay is fun. In 3 card blind, it's the exact opposite, because there's no gameplay to speak of and no piloting to differentiate players
I mostly agree apart from Bandit's Talent, which really does just tell you what to do with it in the name: You should ban dis talent. :V To be more specific, as a spectator / follow-along player, I feel like 3CB is not a format where either ultra-reliable cheap discard OR empty-hand punisher effects should hold sway, and this card is both in one of the best packages Magic has ever seen.
The trouble with not banning anything is that the meta practically solves itself within the month. I do agree that the so-called offenders have been feeling increasingly less offensive over time, but power level is always contextual
The August meta was clearly not solved. There were a ton of unique decks, and it wasn't really clear at all which were the strongest. I would really have preferred giving everyone another month with the data from August to try to find the best decks, rather than banning a bunch of cards that weren't really problematic or oppressive
Short answer is that I am not sure. We have some pretty talent folks in our discord, so it would not suprise me, but these are subjects I am personally not familiar with.
In case this is not just a joke, I want to be very clear that no one stole my idea. This format has existed for longer than my RU-vid channel has and the creator of the format is unknown. I am the only one talking about it on RU-vid, but Cardmarket likely did not know I existed before they did their video. Their video brought a lot of positive attention to what I am doing here and I am greatful for that.
First time doing this, it was a lot more fun than you'd expect "submit a decklist and wait" to be. I'd highly suggest anyone who's watching this to just submit for next month.
Flash seems like a "for sure" on being bannable. Bandit's talent in a vacuum feels like a slower, safer Rack. But with something like Dark Ritual still legal, it's still possible to play turn1 to eat two cards and level up. Not sure if that list was submitted and/or what it's record was, but seems like a "close enough" to cards already banned to just go ahead and keep it out of play.
Dark Ritual + Bandit's Talent generally cannot win because your opponent can simply choose to not play any of their cards to force a tie. Other than that, I think your analysis of the situation is very reasonable
First time seeing this format. Just theory crafting here. wouldn't all these decks lose to something in blue that makes your opponent draw a card? Even if you skip your draw phase due to 3 card blind, is the draw rule just don't lose to drawing? If that doesn't work, couldn't I just lotus? Or is there a banlist? Or thought seize? That would be great here. Like land thought seize rack.
I'm hopeful that few things get banned this month. I'd love to see a month where the meta shapes around what was popular the prior month without bans to shake things up massively.
I will give you a hint: reading the card explains the card 😅 (to be clear, it does not win by itself, people use it in combination with Academy Ruins or Elixir of Immortality to loop it)
@@MTG3CardBlind ? I can see how the Filigree deck you showed wins (it shuffles the Silex back into your deck and replays it later, allowing it to blast your opponent for another 10 damage), but how does it win "by itself"?
@@athath2010 It doesn't 👍 You are precisely right, and I hope that most folks will similarly understand the synergy with Academy Ruins... I hope I did not explain it poorly in the video.
I played 3 card blind online in mtg the source forums when I was in college in like 2008… my main deck was x2 black lotus and x1 barren glory… been watching ur channel for a bit love seeing new content on this old and super fun online format!! Awesome to still see ppl playing now
We have a volunteer group called the "Game Gurus" who help process the matches. There is a database where the results are stored so that they can be fetched for more common matches. Running this event is a lot of work, and is only possible thanks to the Gurus!
3:18 WOW I really didn't think that would be the case. Words of Wilding is talked about so frequently in the Discord that I figured it was fairly common at least among newer players, I never thought it'd be first-submitted this month
It’s been kinda unknown (partially cuz it’s not been submitted) and always had something that’s very similar and maybe a bit overshadowing, Skrelv’s Bitterblossom, etc. also ppl (myself included tbh) underrate it
This was my first participation, and I was actually surprised to see that it was never played, to the point where I checked and re-checked the 3CB rules several times to make sure I didn't miss anything that would make that card not work.
Sort of? There is concensus among folks who spent the most time working on it, and there was someone who created code to try to solve it that comes to the same conclusion, but no one has put together a comprehensive proof. Allegedly, the Elixir deck wins the game when it is on the play, and the game ends in a stalemate when it is on the draw, but we don't have conclusive proof that this is correct.
@@enugie No, I think the folks who devoted the most energy to this feel pretty confident about the conclusion, but no one wants to actually go through and create the comprehensive proof
In this format players do not lose the game for drawing a card while their library is empty. You will still draw cards if they somehow end up in your library (like with Elixir of Immortality).
Why does Shining Shoal not redirect both the attack damage and the sacrifice ability of Broadside Bombardiers? SS doesn't specify that it only redirects a single instance of damage just the next X damage so it should redirect 7 total. All the damage is also from the chosen source of BB 2 from attack and 2 from ability. I tried to look up any rulings for this and found 614.9 which is a description of redirection and 615.7 which is about damage prevention but describes the same kind of ability that SS has. 615.7 says "Such effects count only the amount of damage; the number of events or sources dealing it doesn’t matter." and without any specific rules for damage redirection specifying otherwise I don't understand why it would work any differently than damage prevention.
You are correct, Shining Shoal works the way you describe, there is just never a point where what you are describing is relevant to this puzzle. Remember that the Broadside Bombardier player is fishing for a tie. If Shining Shoal is cast before attacks are declared, Broadside will choose not to attack to wait out the effect. If Shining Shoal is cast after attacks are declared (before combat damage is dealt), Broadside can boast in response to Shining Shoal to sac Mana Crypt (or Great Furnace if they have already sac'd Mana Crypt) to kill the Goblin before Shining Shoal resolves. The only way for Shining Shoal to prevent both the damage from Broadside Bombardier's ability and attack would be if the Bombardier player cooperated in producing that outcome.
@@MTG3CardBlind I see what I was missing now. The boast ability is used in response so it goes on the stack before Shining Shoal and happens before the damage redirection has a chance to activate. Thanks for taking the time to explain.
Someone evidently played that exact deck in August of 2023. We keep records of the Main Event Tournament for this community on the website so we can find some neat things like that.
The artist is my brother and he is still building his brand. I will only share his info once he feels ready to do so (which I am hoping will be in the near future). It would be unethical for me to share his name when he has not given me permission to do so. If he had specifically requested that he should be credited, you would be right, but that was not part of this arrangement
