I think movie producer's or directors needs to bring their movies to you for review before bring them out . I totally agree with you on the fact that the soldier should have move out of the blast because no one can survive from that blast.
I live in Oregon the whitest state in America and while I was raised to love and respect everyone it doesn’t mean I know very much about black culture. It’s nice to see reviews for good movies from a culture other than mine.😊
This movie is a great watch really. It has great points and some flaws as well. The first error was the gunshot patient who refused to die after hours of arguments and back and forth between the criminals and the hospital staff.😂 Have you seen a gunshot patient before? They bleed like crazy and die within ten minutes if not attended to. It was just so unrealistic and forced. Secondly, why spend hours arguing with the criminals on who to attend to while no one is getting medical help? The time they’d have used to treat the woman in labour was the time they used in arguing whether or not to accept Chima.😂 Then at the end after a fast reacting paralytic was given to Uzor, he had no strength to shoot his gun but he had the strength to walk all the way from the surgery ward through the long hallway and down the stairs and through the compound and then the street… for what exactly? Just to get that last shot.😂😂😂 And then he miraculously gets the strength to fire a shot at the police. Why not just finish the shot at the surgery ward? I really don’t like it when we try to copy and paste Hollywood stories and style of filmmaking. This is just a Hollywood hostage situation copy and paste. Like like hundreds of bank hostage situation without any new tricks. Zero creativity.
What is wrong with you? How can you start with “this movie is a great watch” then go and do all that? At this point you’re worse than me 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 But on a serious note, 100% on your take. I have seen your other comments. Will reply. I really appreciate you!
You're right, it's not uninteresting but very low likeability. The casual callousness, the weakness and narcissism.. 🫤🫤. But then, people are actually like this in real life, and the film does touch on important topics, especially of friendships/relationships, so, credit for the effort.
When I heard the Title, I thought the story would be build and developed around the Adire fabric or some of symbolism. But that title was just for marketing purposes. Secondly, I agree with you regarding not looking for moral lessons in a film.😂 I know where to find morals of I need a moral update… films are for the thrill and amazement for me. I want to be amazed and taken on a new ride. I’m stuck with your movie reviews.😩😩😩
Firstly, this storyline isn’t a new one. There have been similar stories especially the fact that the child or parent of the lead actor had to be ill and in need of some money he can’t afford or raise. But this film (TK) has some glorious moments that kept it going. Like that transition of TK from the hospital to his meeting with Gaza. I shouted.😂 The car chase scene were amazing too and the car diving into the and its retrieval from the water was a show of masterpiece. Trust me, it ain’t easy at all. As for the fight sequence at the end… it wasn’t choreographed properly. Filming such an action/fight sequence is no beans though. But there were a few shots that are applauding. Like the crashing into rooms, the landing on the windshield and its breaking effect, the continuity etc. But, what happened to the goons of Gaza after Gaza was shot? They suddenly became irrelevant? The same men who were chanting at the top of their voices in solidarity with their boss. They saw their boss drop dead and did nothing about that? No reactions, no actions…nothing. How it is even possible to lose a gun from your pocket without realising it? Do you know how heavy a gun is? It was after I started handling prop guns on set that I realised how heavy real guns…even the smallest pistols are. Those stuffs are made of heavy metals. It’s very unlikely that someone would lose a gun in that manner and not feel it. Unless it’s a toy gun. Then when I got to the part where Ivie’s character was making that bathroom call…I laughed a very long laugh.😂 That was so amateurish. How can you be making such a sensitive call in a building that is crawling with police officers in a dark time at which the child of the CBN boss is being held hostage and every policeman is on alert? And you are making the call in a bathroom with the door open and you’re backing the opened door, divulging your secret involvement in the kidnapping and even yelling.😂 No one makes such mistake. If people make such mistakes, then we’d have caught all the robbers, kidnappers, ritualists, terrorist, etc, in Nigeria. Then next we saw was the police arresting the mastermind behind the operation. That was the most easiest and lamest police capture operation I have ever watched in a movie all my life. Arresting innocent street kids is even more complex than this.😂 No decoding, no brainstorming, no tactics. And the mastermind was just as accessible as a suya man on the street corner. So easy for the mastermind of the kidnap operation of the CBN governor’s child. Na only to mask him voice him sabi.😂😂😂 Overall, the film is great! Greater than many Nollywood films. For me, ORIGINALITY is the greatest score for a film. Because it’s actually the hardest score to pass. Technicalities are very important too but almost every good film can have that. Good picture, good sound, good lighting, good editing etc. But the creativity for me is number one.
Thank you Pearl, you took your time to analyze this film. You’re intelligent and knowledgeable in the science and art of filmmaking.😂 I agree with the lack of stakes which resulted in little emotions we felt when things started falling apart for them. Also, the plot dragged before the conflict was established. I don’t like when a film drags like that.🤦🏽♂️ Please keep reviewing films for us… we are stuck in this together. Let me go watch the rest of your videos and engage as much as I can.❤
This thing about counter narrative. I thought about it but I haven't seen anything from these ends of Nollywood that deserves that level of charitability.
It sure provokes conversations. Couldn't agree more on the "complementing each other on their narcissistic behavior." I think the movie highlights an uncomfortable albeit trendy issue with modern women: normalizing unaccountability. I find Tijani's writing sort of blehhh 😢 (I don't mean to be rude). It seems like he tries to tackle too much at once and ends up leaving you hanging - kind of half-baked. But I understand where he's coming from. He'll surely get better! Great actors. Thumbs up to Diane for her efforts. Great review as usual!! You always leave me with something to ponder about.
Thank you so much. I appreciate you always. I have soooo much to say on this; "normalising unaccountability.". You see me point this out a lot in my reviews. But it is definitely a trend. and it is unsettling. We don't solve one problem by creating another. But let me not soapbox. i will just continue to point it out. This was kind of appalling. And if the movie is indeed critical of these women, then the conclusion is that it was entirely pointless. But as I said, in the paratext, it isn't. It celebrates the so-called sisterhood. Every single one of my friends, i think, would grab me and shake me if I tried any of this nonsense.
I watched it, and it was a total bore. I kept rewinding, thinking I might have missed something. On Predictability: while predictability isn't always a bad thing, I felt like the reveal about her Alzheimer's diagnosis wasn't the ‘big reveal’ they had intended for it to be. Normally, spoilers don't bother me, as the journey to the reveal matters more, but this was just flat! It wasn't enjoyable for me. That, or maybe it’s because I had already watched 'House of Secrets' and felt like I was watching the same character again. Every time Ireti Doyle's character appeared on screen, I knew she wasn't alive. Even when she said things like she had hoped to catch her daughter for breakfast before she left for work, my reaction was, 'Yeah, right!' I'm not sure what could have been done better, but sadly, this one isn't for me. On a positive note, I loved the scene with Tina Mba and Uzoamaka discussing U’s character’s decision to remain single and child-free. I recorded that clip and sent it to my mother as a tongue-in-cheek warning to prepare for me😩She didn't find it funny! Anyway, as always, lovely review and you always look stunning😍🤗
You caught on faster than me. I just had a vague feeling that something was off but couldn't quite place a finger on it until in retrospect. It could also be because I wasn't even listening to their conversations "the older ones". My brain literally switched off in their scenes.
I was going to watch it but after listening to this review i don't think i will, because it just sounds like yet another nollywood movie investing in everything except good writers
Tried to watch the movie but couldn't go through it. Sorry, not sorry 😅 I guess I'm not artsy enough 😊 On another note: though I had suspected we may be on opposite ends of the values spectrum, I confirmed it today after going catching up on your last give reviews and your unabashed love of this particular movie. But like I pointed out in one of your videos, i love your professinalism. You're smart and know your onions and that's not saying much! Have a great day and I pray you continue growth in your channel. PS: Your reviews are a breath of fresh air!
I'm conflicted about watching the movie. As contrive as this may sound, I mainly watch movies because of the cast. Once I have a certain perception of an actor, it is hard to watch them in any movie no matter how good the story is! Thank you for a great review (even if I haven't watched and probably wouldn't 😀) as usual. Love your delivery and professionalism!
it's so sad that Nollywood has the ability to tell original stories and over and over the movies that comes out are just a waterdown versions of Hollywood movies that are executed poorly. I felt my intelligence being insulted a lot throughout the movie.
I stopped watching this at 11:36, maybe I'll come back to finish it later. In summary, if I would make a video review on "Tokunbo" like this, I'll be saying the opposite of everything you have said here so far at 11:36, at least on a scale of 95%.
- Amputee stub - pretty sure that was a real amputee because the actual hand cutting scene wasn't great. - Nigerian-ness - this is a thing I didn't give it credit for (but should have) because I think a lot of the film language was not (Thanks Ramsey) - Funlola did have a mic pack at her back 😩 - Stockholm syndrome might fit for Adunni. I just can't give that level of charitability to Ramsey - Voice distortion was really only for us. I think I know what he was trying to do. It was just poorly done. - The Music interlude was hilarious😂😂
Hayy god re: amputee "makeup". But you know what? I'd rather err on the side of over-complimenting, especially wen there's so much of the other side LOL. But I'm thinking about what you suggest and don't know how to feel about it. If someone is already an amputee and you make them enact their hand being chopped off… I honestly don't know how to feel. Like, isn't that traumatising? Ha! That mic pack btherrrrred me. But I didn't see it mentioned anywhere so I started to doubt myself. Inside that tight dress! Lmao @ stockhold syndrome. Remember when we were severely dragged for not giving Anikulapo series enough credit as per everything we disagreed with was pretty much easter eggs that we will see next season. I no wan fight. Agree on the voice distortion. I had a lengthier take on it but the video was too long. My music interlude… it was on rewatching that I realized it was funny. At the time it was just frustration. And that just happened to be what I was rocking to. Okayyyy! Thank you so much, iroko. 💛
Dope review Pearl. 🎬 I watched this review last night but forgot to leave a comment only to wake up this morning to see you left a comment on mine and that’s when I remembered that I didn’t leave a comment. Lol. I’m really glad you mentioned the thing about Tokunbo taking the kid to Seme border. It didn’t sit right with me when I watched it but I guess I let it slide because I felt like perhaps I missed something about it. Anyway, nice one. 👍🏽
