IDK what the deal is but RU-vid just recommended me this video next to a Forgotten Weapons video about a Remington Model 8 chambered in .25 Auto (edit: .25 Remington) Have fun going viral or whatever, liked and subscribbled!
I abandoned the project and sold off everything. The big thing I learned was that this would make an excellent 10” pistol. A true one hole at 50 yards. A long barrel is just too much for that little amount of powder to make the trip consistently. I would go with a long barreled pistol next time.
Any chance of getting a shooting vid with your .25 ACP rifle? Would really like to see it in action. I would also like to know what twist rate you went with for the barrel.
Just found this by accident...ive always wondered why no one had done a small carbine in 25 acp...Ive searched and searched i just found this...if it came out in a bolt gun i would be the first in line...the ammo like cci is prime example of why i would want this rifle in the caliper...
Have you made any progress with this project? Even though 25 acp is a pain to load, I too was so frustrated at the shortage a while back I went searching for a possible alternative if it comes again. The 25 acp is really the obvious choice being in the right range, could be suppressed and no reason that accurate cast bullets can't be made. The barrels are the issue, any progress on this?
I was just wondering about the .25 acp in a longer barreled firearm. I was thinking along the same lines you were. Reloadable small game cartridge 40-50 grain bullet moving about 1000 feet per second. I was thinking about a simple blow back semi auto. I had visions of something like the Aero Survival Rifle.
I’m right at the edge of super-sonic on the higher end of the load data. Bullseye got the most speed. When i first took this gun hunting I killed 5 squirrels in six shots. Four of then were head shots. Just where I was aiming. The fifth one I purposely body shot it to see how the bullets would perform on a body shot. Flawlessly is what I think. I think that this is the best round for the job if you eat what you kill. I’m now looking for another platform to host the caliber. Something with a bolt and hopefully a repeater.
@@RideAdventurous You said it was a L-W barrel, is this a .25 airgun barrel? I'm an airgun shooter and quite a few .25 caliber locos/crazies shoot custom 60-80 grain cast 'pellets' through L-W barrels as well as the Korean .25 airgun barrels.
This is not meant to insult or anything, I'm truly curious. Why are your doing that instead of using a 22? Is it the ability to reload? I have a 2506 and was left a bunch of 25acp ammo and I own a lathe so I've toyed with the idea of building an insert to fire the acp from the 06.
Michael Lindquist I had a 22 lr rifle and pistol. I was having trouble finding the particular cartridge that worked well with my 22’s then I decided to use what I had. I was getting 30% fail to fire on ammo that had been stored for 3 years. That was not acceptable for me so I sold my guns and ammo and went looking for an alternative. I am a hunter and the other offerings, though accurate, would destroy squirrels and small game I was hunting. So I was looking for a reliable centerfire that was reloadable and had good accuracy and was cheap to support. The 25 acp fit the velocity but I didn’t know if I could get the accuracy that I needed. I started working with Speer gold dot hollow points for testing and have graduated to rcbs cast lead bullets. I can make a cartridge for about a nickel a round. It seems to have a lot of accuracy potential. Now I am in the process of having a custom reamer made that will reduce the free-bore and properly address the lead for cast bullets. I have been negotiating with a barrel manufacturer to have barrels made in this country. They will soon be available this winter.
Nice work. Im considering buying a 25rimfire single shot rifle and converting it to 25acp. Is that something you'd recommend? Keep us updated on your progress!
@@RideAdventurousI would like an update on this rifle like yourself I love squirrel hunting and am looking for a unique alternative to 22lr please make more videos about this custom rig
Loaded 50 grain Speer hollow point with 1.4 grains of AA bullseye. Got super-sonic report. At 30 yards the spread was about and inch. Mostly because of the failing light and I wasn’t taking my time. I just wanted to see how much it fouled the barrel and if there was unburnt powder left in the barrel. The cases were slightly smokey and there was no residue in the barrel (for a change). Tonight I loaded a progressive load in .1 grain increments. Starting with 1.5 and ending with 1.9. I’m afraid to go above this as it will start affecting case life. Which is one of the reasons I went with this caliber set-up. More later.
I’ve been doing some experimenting with a 25 acp rifle. I had it made from a virgin 6.35mm barrel from Germany. Right now I only have a single shot rifle but I am looking at prototyping a bolt gun. So far the accuracy is excellent. On par with using a high end rifle and expensive match (Re:ely). After the 22lr crunch post Newtown. And given the accessibility and the reliability of post crunch manufacture I got out of the business. I sold off all of my 22lr pistols and rifles. But the itch for a good squirrel gun was still there. I started looking around for a highly portable, 100 rounds in your pocket and reloadable...not to mention my expectation of accuracy. In my exploration I came across John Browning’s 25 acp. He developed it to be effective in a pocket pistol with a two inch barrel. It is basically the equivalent of a two in 22lr. So I wondered if it could be used in a rifle. The problem turns out to be that the 22lr was developed as a rifle and successfully segue into a pistol. The opposite is true for the 25 acp. It was developed as a pistol cartridge and now my task was going to be turning it into a rifle cartridge. I started with Remington 50 grain Remington green and white box. The third shot didn’t make the trip out of my barrel. So then it became a reloading problem. I have used the available load data and used the higher end of the spectrum. They seem to make the trip without showing any pressure signs. I have done some off the books reloading using magnum pistol powders. The problem seems to be that the barrel fouls very quickly. After two or three shots accuracy suffers. So now I am back to using faster pistol powders and starting at the high end of recommended loadings. I am not afraid to go above the recommended loadings as this is in a rifle platform and powder capacity is limited. 3-4 grains with most powders. Tomorrow I am picking up some more powders to continue my experimentation. Now when I say that it is accurate but that I want better accuracy I must say this. I am shooting a dime sized group at 50 yards. When I took it hunting, I shot 4 squirrels with five shots. All four of them were head shots, which is where I was aiming. The third squirrel, took two shots to take. I shot over it’s head by half an inch. So I reloaded and lowered my aim. Taking him cleanly in the head. The reason was that I had been shooting about twelve yards and this one was a little further out so I held high and put the bullet right over top of him. But the rifle had such little report that it didn’t startle him and I was able to break down the rifle and reload (a slow process under pressure) and take my second shot. All of the shots I have taken were headshots except for one. On that one I was actually aiming at the body to see what kind of expansion/damage I would get on a less than optimal shot. It didn’t affect the harvest and I doubt that the bullet expanded at all. I was using Speer gold dot hollow points over 4.2 grains of H110 and a Remington 7 1/2 small rifle primer. That is way off book for this cartridge and I wouldn’t recommend it for any pistol of any manufacture. Powders that I have used include universal, blue dot, accurate #9, H110 and imr 4227. The bullets that I am using are Speer gold dot hollow points and RCBS 50 grain cast lead. I would use more varied bullets but these seem to be the only ones available. A loaded Speer costs about $0.20 and a cast lead from scavenged wheel weights cost less than a nickel. Given my luck with factory ammo it is a reloaded proposition only. I know that I could have gone to a 17HMR or a 22 magnum. But once again I would be at the mercy of the market and the availability/quality control issues. So that is why I decided to go the route I have taken. This round in a rifle seems like it has a lot of potential and I am fairly satisfied with the way the experiments are going. At this time I have about $1600 in just the rifle. Not including load development costs but I’m happy to do this.
I've been thinking of doing something similar I'd like to see more of this project I tried to get a guy to custom build me one but he wasn't interested
What optics & ammo are you using? This rifle is amazing even with crap ammo! I got Nikon buckmaster 6-18×. (Had laying around) I'm shooting 11/2" groups at 200yds with cheap wolf hollow point 123grain. $199 per 1000rounds
Great video brotha!!!!!!! Hello.. Im a chicago fisherman with a youtube fishing channel.. Could you please help me out by checking out my content and if you like what you see would you please be ever so kind enough to subscribe?
Your scope a 30mm tube? I got the 77/44 and tried putting a 2-7 Burris on it and the tube isnt long enough for the way Ruger spaced out the ring slots, so cant really get a good eye relief with that scope. Im considering a 1x like leupold a 1-4x20. I dont want a over powered scope for it. I think a 3x9 is a bit much for timber hunting. I like a lower power starting range. Sometimes when deer come in close in low light in dark woods 3x is difficult to get on target.
you could have avoided all this with 4 words: "I don't answer questions". Then just stick to it. Without your answers to their questions this would have not gone so far.
Im not some social justice warrior out there against the cops. I am a working man. I have kids and responsibilities. I have bills to pay. Im not one of those people who go stir up the cops by parading around with an AR slung over my shoulder...but that being said, I will go about my business. If that means walking somewhere with my AR slung over my shoulder then that's what I'll do... So now that Ive fought the good fight. Its your turn. You go out and confront the cops and "make a statement".
you blew it by answering the original questions. cops are never their to help you, only to fine or imprison you. if you had refused to answer their questions they would have had nothing to go on and on about.
