Gladiatores is a school for historical european martial arts. You are welcome to train the almost forgotten fencing arts of the 14. - 17. century with us, which are quite different from modern sport fencing.

We are based in the city of Karlsruhe, Germany, but we have some schools and training groups in other places too: München, Jena, Pforzheim, Freiburg, Stuttgart, Bielefeld, Berlin, Halle(Westfalen), Schlanstedt and Villach(Austria). If you live too far from these places you can also visit one of our frequent weekend workshops.

Our training is comparable to asian martial arts (like e.g. Karate or Kendo). We use blunt training weapons made of steel, and wear standard sportswear, mostly without protective gear. The funny medieval clothes are only used for some of the videos you can watch here on youtube ;)

This video got me started 8 years ago and since then I have seen my small study group grow into a school of over 25 members and 3 coaches in an indoor facility.

The real OGs remember the 4:3 aspect ratio version This video was probably the video that made me aware that HEMA existed. When I first saw the video I thought the costumes were kinda weird, now I understand why the costumes look the way they do. When I first saw this video, my swords were mostly wooden. Now I own steel swords, and a little bit of armor. I was interested in swords and stuff, but mostly because of Zelda, LotR, and Final Fantasy. Now I am writing my own fantasy RPG that is more low fantasy informed by this sort of style. I am grateful that this video exists still, I still come back to it from time to time. Thank you.

@@czblax6697 Well I hate to say it, but they are wearing a style I don't know very well. I know it's German, probably 1400s, just not sure where in germany, or anything more specific than that But that exact curiosity is what got me started, do research on the sources they study, look into the sources from the time period, and see what you can find. There are definitely fashion historians, and they will have the information about what was in style where and when, it's actually pretty fascinating.

Man, I was in college when this aired and people thought of me some sort of psycho just because I watched it. This video was an eye opener for me, I never thought how sword fighting could be that complex.

This isn't a criticism, just a critique and suggestion: I notice that in all these HEMA videos they just stop at the binding and disarming, there doesn't seem to be any wrestling included in the training when in the historical reality the original contemporary fighters once they got close enough and were binding their opponents weapon and disarming them they'd then grapple them and try to take them down. I think looking at the 'folk wrestling' styles that still exist in parts of Europe, things like Schwingen in Switzerland and the several styles in Englands rural west and north, might provide an appropriate complement for the final stage in these.

Attack is from up high towards low and for in Defense goes from low to raising to either middle segment or to up high to stop the incoming blade - interesting.

Back in the late Medieval-Renaissance-Early Modern Era, 1300-1700, the Irish & Scottish (although very skilled in areas) relied more on brawn, sheer primal ferocity & blind combat fearlessness (as brutally effective as it wasn't, as such primevally motivated tactics could wreak incredible devastation or prove suicidally futile) while the Germans & other Europeans (although fierce & crazy at times, most especially the Swiss & Balkan tribes) relied more on spectacular training, elaborate skill, great timing, pinpoint exploitation & cold steely fury. Just like above. What a superb demonstration. Consummate professionals of outstanding skill, finesse & dedication!
