Also, one reason they shout is to signal their attacks in this video because they're practicing maneuvers, not actually sparring. The shout helps with reactions and as beneficial side-effect, teaches the fencer to breathe out!

this really makes me want to fence like that. I love how this simple short video displays sensible and logical attacks, then parries for them, then counters for the parries, etc. excellent little video, one of my favorites

Every martial art uses vocalization when striking, its not just about making a noise. If you don't use vocalization when striking TRY it. See the difference it makes.

The thing about shouting is, in fact, not about shouting as such. It's about breathing out. Whether you do muscle build-up, boxing, football, martial arts, or god knows what, breathing out helps the contraction of the muscles. Do it as shout, add some "philosophical" aspects about shouting as in asian martial arts, or whatever, in the end it comes to the breathing. But i do agree with you, if you're not used to it, you really feel ridiculous^^

***** Speaking as one who often have worked with teaching actors to fence, yes. You have to simplify things, and even then developing proper timing takes a long time, usually more than what you have available for a standard rehearsal period. This doesn't mean you can't choreograph and shoot fencing sequences that are more true to what we today consider realistic fencing. You have to cheat more, though. And the director must agree... Often artistic considerations supercede "correct" fencing.

I very much liked the way you "leveled" the fight, as in: First the strike hit him, then he defended, then he countered and so on. This really showed how complex it can be, my only problem though: We need to go deeper!
@zoolkhan

my problem is, i need a sparrings partner - you can only learn so much from watching a video.... finding someone to spar with who takes it equally serious - super hard.

whether it is a boxer "blowing out" as they punch or a French fencer saying "et la" as they strike...... as with all of it, a way synchronise the breath and action and to help with timing....

@Gonrach01

In my opinion this video is made to demonstrate longsword-techniques. Attack, counter, contracounter etc. Not so far about to shout or not to shout and if to shout, how to shout in the right historical way. I guess it would be more helpful for every visitor to discuss the intentious theme of this (IMO far too short) movie. You told the world in many posts what is your position about "making noises" and the world will treasure this knowledge forever. So it´s ok now, isn´t it?
@EvilMerlin

I've been using my keno kote now for about a year in my studies. They are now becoming more of a hinderance as I work more with Meyer stuff. Not sure if the new HEMA gloves are going to do what I want them to without losing a thumb.
@Verithiell

I meant like "samurai". See, those shotus sound very "oriental". Shouts in western martial arts were very important, and there is whole philosophy behind them. In European fencing, not so much.

@Kunstdesfechtens
@Kunstdesfechtens 11 лет назад
Kendo is pretty neat. If you're not training other martial arts, it will teach you range and timing and to use your hips, which are vital in many sword arts. You could also try sport fencing, judo, wrestling or MMA to give you a foundation to build on that would help a lot with medieval fencing. Iaido or battojutsu would be some help as well for general sword principles. My Japanese sword training has been a big help with my medieval swordsmanship, that's for sure.

Personally they don't sound Oriental to me. They have similarities, they are short and explosive, but I suppose we all hear with the ears that we have. I frankly don't know enough about Historical Martial arts to say one way or another whether people of the period being shown here made these kinds of cries. However if one considers the similarities in sophistication in east and west, we need to consider that vocalisation and sound was used in the West
@elearis1

What kind of fencing masks are those? I need to get one for classes, but apparently there are a bunch of different types and I'm not sure what to buy.
@willnonya9438
@willnonya9438 9 лет назад
Oberonjames I use Absolute Force, but if I was going to buy again, I think I would go with SPES. Low profile good protection. Be sure that you are careful about sizing when you get a mask. I went with large since after measuring my head multiple times I was on the line of large and medium.My head rattles around in it like a can full of loose change.
@Oberonjames
@Oberonjames 9 лет назад
Will nonya I was worried about sizing, yes. My head is at the high limit of large and I was thinking I'd have to go extra large. The school I train at lets me borrow a mask until I can buy one of my own, but all of their masks are too small for my head. I went for Large in the end. I'm waiting for it to arrive in the mail and I hope it isn't too small. I was told you can adjust them though, so it shouldn't be a problem.
@willnonya9438
@willnonya9438 9 лет назад
Oberonjames yeah, the medium I got for my club's loaner is a bit tight on me but I kinda like it. Too bad everyone else has small heads.

How many battle or war cries have you heard. If you could show me where the "real" battle cries you are referring to, then I can compare? from people who display this kind skill? Surely if they wanted "ninja" they should be silent, ninjas being about stealth... no?

If you mean those that train eastern martial arts, then yea. For me, shouts do not help. They only make me feel ridiculous.
@OneMindAnyWeapon
@OneMindAnyWeapon 12 лет назад
ok... no battle cries? war cries? knights and warriors had those... oaths too.... we have to be careful on what we imagine about the past... a lot of what we think we "know" is based upon only partial or incorrect knowledge.....
