CHP, FBI, military, and other state agencies have applications age restrictions. FBI agents are forced to retire at age 57 unless they have specialty area that gives them an exception to that rule. I have q suspicion that it has to do with retirement benefits but not verifiable. Most city and county law enforcement agencies do not have application age restrictions. The oldest officer I trained entered the police a academy at 52 years of age.
Fascinating video I love the insight Why is the California Highway Patrol the only one with the maximum age of 35? I’m 57 is that too old to be a law-enforcement officer ?
Hello sir , I have been waiting watching a few of your videos . I applied to to CHP and I’m testing next month for PAT and written . I am confident I will pass , but I have a few concerns regarding background check . I don’t have no tickets or crimes but I live in a ghetto area and have an arm tattoo, hand tattoo and two very small finger tattoos. Nothing crazy just art . According to CHP they don’t specify about tattoos , they just want you to comply to cover them up . I have no problem with a long sleeve uniform and a sleeve glove . I just want to know more about what you think .
Thanks for reaching out. It is important that you notify your Background Investigator of the type of neighborhood you were raised in so that here she is not shocked when they visit that area of the city. Most law-enforcement agencies are conservative in California, and they are somewhat restrictive on what types of tattoos can be visually observed past long sleeve shirts. The question would be if you were to wear a long sleeve shirt, would it cover all the tattoos? Make sure that you also have a readily available answer if the Background Investigator asks you about each tattoo.
@@AdjuMjc thanks for that information. My uniform would not cover all of my tattoos. The uniform’s sleeve would not cover the hand tattoo and finger ones . I can remove the finger ones at my expense or wear make up or wear a glove sleeve that would only expose the tip of my fingers .
I failed with a recent agency. I was devastated. The pressure of being evaluated got the best of me. I also was put in new situations I had never been in and did not perform well.
I'm sorry to hear you failed FTO. Keep in mind that there are lots of law enforcement agencies out there with different types of workloads. Stay strong and focused on your future career intentions.
You can thank newsom, Jeff mccomber, Raquel buckle, and all the other spineless POSs that run the dept. They care more about condemned individuals than the safety of the officers. Even the prisoners don’t want this Norway model because of the mixing of classifications on the yard But hey, yall voted for this leadship so deal with it.
As of 2024, CDCR has higher salary but less officer 👮 safety due to California Model - Federal has lower salary, higher officer safety precautions. Do your homework on all agencies and make the decision that best fits your needs. So many LE and Correctional open jobs in 2024. Look 👀 at all options. 😊
@adjumjc I currently passed both the physical & written for chp w good results! I wanted to ask if you would recommend the career as rn I have a BA & a year left to finish to become a teacher. I’m nervous as I might die in the line of duty
Why on their website does it say sheriff deputy makes $82,157 - $138,605 I dont see anywhere on their website or online where it states LASD sheriff deputy makes 143k-222k lol
Thanks for reaching out. POST.CA.GOV was advertising that amount for Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff. That figure includes all their benefits. The salary without benefits as of May 17, 2024 is: Full time - $84,827.52 - $143,117.40 Annually. Now, keep in mind that most deputies and officers are making at least 40 to 50K a year in overtime work on top of their salaries. Look up Oakland PD where one of their officers has made $400,000 in one year. Another San Francisco, CA: "Deputy Bloom has consistently ranked among the top three overtime earners in the city every year since 2016. Over this period, he accumulated over $2.2 million in overtime compensation, a substantially higher amount than any other municipal employee. Lots of open jobs for full-time law enforcement in 2024. :)
What if they ask you on the psych test if you like Opera, Mechanics, Poetry, Reading books versus building and if you life of a party?? Also, why are there Math questions?
I failed my first psych and have my next one tomorrow. The research and videos I watched before my first psych told me to be open, honest, and communicative. It led me to do just that, including what you said: “word vomit”. I failed because of it. I wish I would’ve came across your video earlier. I’m preparing myself to still be honest but also to really be careful with giving them any information that will lead them to believe I would not be suitable for the job. Thank you!
Man, I’m going to assume that everything you said in this video still applies today. There’s a lot of food for thought in this video. A lot of stuff that I’ve never heard anyone mention.
So if someone sets your home on, and told 2 or more people they were going to do it.And those people told the police what the person said . Then what happens !
Hmmm 🤔 you may be missing a word - read California Penal code section 182: conspiracy. 664 Ca PC is attempt - if house catches fire 🔥 451 Ca PC Arson. All felony crimes
Hello I am currently on the hiring process to becoming a CHP officer. I wanted to ask if the background process is the same and is it up to date? My division is in Inland empire, California
Hello Bryan - CHP uses the Personal Background Investigation (PHS) form from POST as well as another internal form similar to the PHS. Make sure your information matches on both forms. BUT- although the CHP background process is similar to other law enforcement agencies, they are able to include additional steps to the background investigation process at their discretion. There is only one CHP academy and it is located in Sacramento, CA. Just prior to graduation, you will be asked for your top choices for field office locations. They base your assignment on several key points of information: If you are married, if you own a home, if your kids and close family live in that area, etc. There are no guarantees where you will be assigned but the more categories you check, the higher your chances you will get placed in your desired area. However, all of this is dependent on whether or not that field office has openings at the time of your graduation.
I think an ambivert is most people. Omnivert on the other hand is most likely diagnosed with a disorder. I know someone like that! Thanks for this video very informative 👍
People who have failed FTO the first time. You have any words of encouragement if they have a chance to pass second time around or any best advice you can give? Thank you.
If you failed FTO, you have to go over copies of your DOR s Daily Observation reports to see what area were noted that you never improved. Be honest and admit what areas you should have improved but didn’t. Once you have identified those, you have to work hard on those issues by attending various training courses that address those issues. Your POST academy certificate in CA is valid for only 3 years from date you can get ended employment so you need to get busy applying to as many agencies as possible - even as a reserve officer 👮 just to keep that cert alive. Sit down 🪑 with law enforcement experts to see if the reasons you failed FTO can be fixed. Study and improve your personality, - even 1% a day, in the 100 days you will be 100% better. What you don’t want to do is drown in your pity party and do nothing to improve yourself 😊
CalPERS retirement benefits have always been considered community property. A 50/50 division, though ridiculous, is nothing new. Also, the no-handcuffing rule would probably work well enough in Level I-II facilities, but you can bet it won't be implemented in higher security areas. There's a huge difference between what the political types in Sacramento say to do and what actually happens in Pelican Bay.
I’m 16 right now I was planning on joining the army for 4-6 years and get my bachelors in criminal justice then become a police officer is this a good plan plz help I feel confused and need some points of interest
I respect 🫡 those who have joined the military to protect our country. My advice would be to graduate high school and get a 2 year degree in Criminal Justice then transfer to a four year university to obtain your Bachelor degree. At age 22 you will be better equipped to decide whether to join the service as an officer (2nd Lieutenant) or apply to police agencies, FBI, etc. large police agencies offer more specialized job assignments- California agencies pay the highest salaries and benefits. At age 22 and with a 4 year degree, you will be best equipped to decide which career path to pursue 😊
thank you for replying to my comment is there any other ways to prepare for this other than the military because although I want to join I have a disability called IBD which f-word sucks and as of right now I so not know if I can still join with out being rejected from it@@AdjuMjc
I don't think they should disqualify you for writing introvert or ambivert just because the qualities are not good for being a cop, plus isnt the purpose of the psych test to see if your crazy or not and you answering everything truthfully even when they throw the same questions 5 times at you. There are plenty of introverted cops out there.
Thanks 🙏 for sharing your feedback. The purpose of this video is to inform and not sugarcoat reality. To enter the law enforcement profession, applicants must fit a ‘mold.’ They must fit that mold or a background investigator, psychologist or Field Training Officer will wash them out during their evaluation processes. In early years of school students take various personality tests to see what professions would be a good fit for them. By further researching each profession, students learn what the job molds are and if they would be a good fit for that career. 😊
Thank you for this video! My personal understanding of introvert/extrovert is how you recharge. Extroverts recharge by being around people, introverts recharge by being alone. I personally am an introvert, I recharge by being alone (or in my home with my wife/kids). I am by no means shy, non-assertive, or afraid/anxious to approach people and start conversations. My current vocation requires me to be very social and to communicate and interact personally with individuals, small groups, as well as large groups in a public speaking capacity, sometimes tackling difficult topics or awkward conversations. After a long day of being "social" I do feel tired or somewhat drained and need to recharge in a low key environment where I don't feel like I need to be "on". An extrovert, on the other hand, would feel energized after a long day of socializing. Let me know if this is a proper understanding of the topic or if I'm potentially "shooting myself in the foot" by labeling myself as an introvert, as I'm currently in the process with two police departments. I have taken the Myers Briggs and I got an INTJ.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and perceptions Miguel. It is best wo ask that question of a therapist or psychiatrist who can better explain to you if you would be a good fit for a peace officer position if you assert that you are an introvert. Keep in mind that peace officers are constantly dealing with people at various temperaments and I would be concerned that if being around too many people drains you, - you may not be a good fit for this profession. My last full-time job as a police officer we worked 11 hour days for four days with four days off but some of those days off would be spent in court testifying or working overtime. Again, this is just my opinion and you should do some research to see if a person who is an introvert would be able to pass psychological evaluation and obtain employment as a peace officer. Best wishes to you and thanks again for sharing your thoughts and perceptions.
Well spoken..... Thank you for defining and breaking down everything we have missed because of or public service. 7 years traveling up and down the CalFire missing my children's school event and family gatherings and CDCR force over 16-hour shift. 26 years missed my family .Now retired i can work part time and be part of my family like other people.
Hello bryan, Im currently going through the backgrounds process with, COCO county sheriffs office. But the issue is I haven’t heard anything from them, I heard you state in the video that we should apply for multiple departments. Do you think its too late for me to still apply for another department, since I’m currently going through the background process? I truly don’t want my application to be a last resort for the department I applied for, I also heard you say that. We should apply for multiple departments its puts like a fire under our backgrounds investigator to wanna hurry it up. Would it look bad on me if I apply for another department even though I’m in the process with one?
Thanks for reaching out. If it’s been over 3 weeks and you haven’t heard from you BI or hiring staff, it’s okay to send them an email to see if there are any updates. You can at anytime apply for other agencies. I recommend at least 10 and use that to motivate others to speed up hiring process. You have to be willing to move to where opportunity is. It is never a good idea to apply to one agency and just wait.
@@AdjuMjc Im assuming its just due to the nervousness and the overthinking, but it has been only 9 business days. Also does it look like I’m hiding something if I apply elsewhere? I would like to be as open and as modest as possible, but as you stated I don’t want to miss out on my opportunity. Another thing is, I don’t want to work for any agency and I only want to be a deputy sheriff. Do you have any suggestions on what I should do? As well thanks for your response.
If you wish to become a deputy sheriff, keep in mind that there are a number of county loan enforcement agencies, and no one will fault you for applying to several as this will increase your chances of getting hired.
My cousin just got told he didn’t move forward. Coco county takes forever. I applied to 10 agencies got put in backgrounds in 3. 2 non select and I’m working on a couple more that I’ve just got put into. Some agencies have different standards. My thing is when they say “we want people with experience” that’s a flat out lie. It’s just to get you to admit more than you feel was needed. Lmao
@@AlexTapia8616 hey alex, thanks for your reply! when you say coco takes forever. how long are we talking? also its ok I've been sparking my intrest elsewhere so even, if they procrastinate. I can't and I wont not even a bit
Law enforcement officers 👮 must be willing to communicate with people. If you feel that you could not perform this task or that your introverted tendency may block this behavior, it may affect how a police psychologist 👩⚕️ decides on whether or not to pass you for that career. It is best to research what type of personality you are by taking the Meyers Briggs test and after looking at the results you can see if you would be a good fit for what type of various jobs. One other option is to consult with a private psychiatrist on the matter.
One significant difference in working conditions that people should consider is that some of the deputies working rural areas for the County Sheriff agencies and most of the CHP officers are working without a backup nearby. Its like to working without a net. Even a small municipal PD will generally have adequate backup within a couple minutes' distance in the event a traffic stop or a pedestrian contact or a routine call for service goes bad. That's not the case when it's a rural area or even on a highway in a metro area and units are scattered over a 10 or 20 or 40 mile stretch of road. Probably most rural areas have spots where their nearest backup might be 20 minutes away or occasionally even longer. For just 1 more cop, not 4 or 5. Orange County and some of the smaller counties are an exception, but "rural" otherwise happens all up and down the state of California. Just having the option to call for and get a backup onsite in a minute or two can make a big difference. Just having another head on scene can be helpful to solicit a 2nd opinion on how to handle a situation. Just having another head on scene can inhibit or prevent a crook from thinking they can get away with escalating or running. Just having another head onsite can sometimes make it possible to get a struggling arrestee into handcuffs (although realistically that often takes a total of 3 or 4 heads, not just 2). If you've never been in a fight then you may not realize how long 30 seconds is or how badly you can get hurt. If you've never been punched then you may not realize what happens when you get your bell rung. This especially applies to people of small stature. That 25-30# of additional gear isn't going to be any help, either. No amount of karate or muay thai or even boxing is going to get someone into handcuffs. If the physical environment even offers that much room to be moving around in, which usually it won't. IRL a lot of the shootings that have occurred were the result of the cop losing the struggle to get the arrestee into handcuffs. Not to mention the number of cops who overreacted in the face of escalation because they were concerned they might lose that fight for life.
My 1 year probation did not begin until I passed the FTO program. FTO was after I passed 6 month academy. BTW I knew a guy who got terminated his last day of probation (personality conflict with a supervisor) and could not fight it.
My advice is listen and be respectful. Your reputation is being formed not only by supervisors but other police officers. I did not socialize outside of work until probation was over. @@AdjuMjc
I am all about large departments you have more opportunities to move around different assignments. CHP if you get promoted you get moved to another station most likely another part of state. If your married have kids in school etc. that will have a major impact on home life. If you are a motorcycle person CHP is way to go, I know guys who got on bikes within 4 years of being on the road.
The new policies implemented by Sac/headquarters endanger both officers and inmates. Forcefully integrating inmates who refuse to program together. Staff assaults are increasing. The “California” model sounds great in theory but we have this thing called prison politics and prison gangs that other counties don’t have. The state wants us to pretty much be friends, play sports with violent offenders. They can say non violent all they want doesn’t make them non violent. For instance an inmate was playing ping pong with an inmate the same inmate assaulted an officer the NEXT day with a pen. Sorry if it comes to MY or my partner’s safety or policy, I’m picking safety every single time. Another fun policy the state has implemented is not moving inmates who commit indecent x to ad seg so instead you get to still have that inmate who committed S** crimes against you stay in your building and re traumatized you. Mental health and camaraderie are at an all time low for officers in California prisons, especially in institutions where there are body cams that run 24/7 even when there is no inmate contact. You can’t vent to your partners the only people who truly know the things you’re dealing with or you have to worry about your body cam being reviewed and used against you for the conversation with your partner. I can totally see cameras during inmate contact 100%, but not when you can’t have a single private conversation with the people who you spend more time with than your own family. 5 years ago I would have recommended the department to anyone who was interest in LE, not anymore. Not with the policy makers who have NEVER worked the line at all, let alone a level 4 yard. It’s a JOKE.
