Great topic! As a retired Corrections officer I can say the money is great and so are the benefits. As far as the Norway model is concerned, it has been a total nightmare and officers are getting hurt. The problem is the demographic. California has a volatile mix of groups and factions unique to California. These groups are not isolated like in other countries and they are motivated by money and power. In my opinion, the non-designated title given to the new inmate population was just a reset because the department was running out of yards to keep inmates safe.

Thanks for sharing your expertise and comments on the video. The new model presents officer safety concerns and I certainly hope that administration is taking that into account when releasing violent persons into a location where it may present a danger to correctional staff and officers. It will be interesting to follow the implementation of such a program in a non-Norway volatile environment.

@@AdjuMjcI retired a little bit over two years ago. Throughout my career I have seen the department go through numerous changes and challenges. I've worked at levels from SHU Programs to Acute Care in the Department of Mental Health. The Cartels, La EME and organized disruptive groups thrive on soft programing yards due to the outside world. Due to the recent changes of the point system, inmates who were once too dangerous to walk on a minimum custody facility are now in the mix. I'm talking about Sicairos and Hitmen! The irony is they mostly lay low because they're bringing in money. Yes, they're thriving in prison.

no recidivisms because parole officer and street cops got their hands tied.

CalPERS retirement benefits have always been considered community property. A 50/50 division, though ridiculous, is nothing new. Also, the no-handcuffing rule would probably work well enough in Level I-II facilities, but you can bet it won't be implemented in higher security areas. There's a huge difference between what the political types in Sacramento say to do and what actually happens in Pelican Bay.

I believe you’re trying to speak on “the Norway model”. It’s an interesting idea. But that’s nowhere near the most important change in CDCR. What about integrating the Protective custody w/ general population. This is dangerous to the convicts but also to officers. Officers were just attached in Tahachapi or Daleno I believe. Don’t be a co in California. It’s better to keep your sanity and health.

no accountability on inmate action and behavior. change the definition of over familarity that will make staff vulnerable for inmate manipulation.

When are these changes effective?

These changes are happening now - It is based on several pillars - each institution is implementing the California Model at various stages depending on manpower, available resources, etc: Here is how it is implemented at one of their institutions: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Np7qcOFim6w.htmlsi=dkB0xjHS9b92o5dN

The new policies implemented by Sac/headquarters endanger both officers and inmates. Forcefully integrating inmates who refuse to program together. Staff assaults are increasing. The “California” model sounds great in theory but we have this thing called prison politics and prison gangs that other counties don’t have. The state wants us to pretty much be friends, play sports with violent offenders. They can say non violent all they want doesn’t make them non violent. For instance an inmate was playing ping pong with an inmate the same inmate assaulted an officer the NEXT day with a pen. Sorry if it comes to MY or my partner’s safety or policy, I’m picking safety every single time. Another fun policy the state has implemented is not moving inmates who commit indecent x to ad seg so instead you get to still have that inmate who committed S** crimes against you stay in your building and re traumatized you. Mental health and camaraderie are at an all time low for officers in California prisons, especially in institutions where there are body cams that run 24/7 even when there is no inmate contact. You can’t vent to your partners the only people who truly know the things you’re dealing with or you have to worry about your body cam being reviewed and used against you for the conversation with your partner. I can totally see cameras during inmate contact 100%, but not when you can’t have a single private conversation with the people who you spend more time with than your own family. 5 years ago I would have recommended the department to anyone who was interest in LE, not anymore. Not with the policy makers who have NEVER worked the line at all, let alone a level 4 yard. It’s a JOKE.

If you are a state employee - it’s time to look at other state jobs - lateral transfers etc - safety is your life and you one ☝️ have one life left

Yes - there have been major changes taking place in California that provides financial incentives for state and county organizations to hire convicted felons. In California, the old practice of: if you have a felony conviction, you can't work for a government organization is now a thing of the past. Communities now understand that 95% of the incarcerated population will eventually return to their communities and they are doing everything possible to provide employment to reduce recidivism rates. Check your area for community organizations that are involved in hiring persons who have criminal records.
