@HollisAudioLabs

The first pedal was the treble booster, then turned off. The second pedal was the EQD Life Metal pedal with both the boost and Rat sides that are separate switches. The third pedal is a SUNN-T preamp pedal that emulates the SUNN Model T preamp to drive the Laney LA-Studio amp.

In the original amps the pedal is based upon, for the Laney Supergroup MKI, the C2=C5=250pf and for the SUNN Model T C2=C5=270pF, not 220pF. The PI cap for the Supergroup MKI C13=47pf and for the Model T C13=270pf. Also for the Supergroup MKI mode both channels would have C3/R6 installed. As is. the gain of the Treble channel does not match the Bass channel. This is based off my Laney Supergroup MKI I have and repaired and an original SUNN Model T schematic. These may have been decisions of the pedal designer, but not per the original designs.

@HollisAudioLabs
@HollisAudioLabs Год назад
The Beta 402 is 33in x 25in. They only sound thin if you are running to much treble. Adding the Beta 205 gives it a very well defined bottom for down tuning. The SUNN Fender Era model 412 cab maybe better, but more expensive and not really what I wanted.
@phildemetro
@phildemetro Год назад
I like this video and this channel, Richard. Because of the tuning and low output pickups Tony was always trying to get brightness and articulation. Around '73 or '74 he was likely using JBL D-120F's instead of Goodman's or Fanes or even Celestions that came stock in the Laney cabs. If you can find them you could even try the Laney-spec Celestion T-1976's that had similar brightness, headroom and were were even more aggressive than the JBL. He would have used these right up until the end of the Ozzy era. Then it was KT-88 Marshalls and high wattage Celestions for H&H until 6L6 based 300W Boogie Coliseums entered the picture for Mob Rules. An all-maple Birch guitar would help articulation even further.
@HollisAudioLabs
@HollisAudioLabs Год назад
I have a John Birch J1 with a JB Biflux neck and JB Magnum bridge pickups. It is very bright in comparison to the Mahogany SG. It weighs a ton! I know Tony's J1 had his interchangable pickup system, so never seen the pickups in use, but the John Birch SG had the Magnum X bridge I have on my Epiphone SG Goth. Have seen both a JB Magnum and Hyperflux in the bridge position of the JB SG. Lots of changes over the years. I have a more modern JBL K120 in a Laney 1x12 that is from the '70s, where the D120F was late '60s and Fender favorites. There is a video of it on the channel.
@phildemetro
@phildemetro Год назад
@@HollisAudioLabs I like those pickups. For Iommi inspired tones I have a JayDee single coil based on the Monkey pickup in a '68 SG Special with a Leo Quan bridge. Also, a JayDee double coil humbucker based on the Birch maple cross guitar in a black 2022 SG Special with a Schaller fine tuner bridge. The new Gibson's are built fine but the wood isn't quite right. It's not dried out fully. For that sound I'll go Into a '73 Klipp with matching 4x12 Laney cab with a quad of Goodmans or JBL D-120f's or even T1976's. I have the early Sabbath tone on deck. The Laney is critical for that

Very interesting, Richard! I have 4 of those orange frame 120f's loaded into an old Hiwatt SE 4122 cabinet. It's a very pronounced difference in projection than, say, my Klipp cabinet with Goodmans Audiom 12-P's or another Hiwatt SE4123F cab with Celestion T1976's. The JBL's are LOUD, clean, bright, efficient. A post '73 Iommi tone. I hear it on the SBS track. The Laney Spec Celestion T1976's are very aggressive in the mids. Paired with my '73 Laney with the Klipp channel on and a '68 SG Special with JD single coil it, actually sounds evil - whatever that means but it does. I don't hear the T1976's in Sabbath, personally. I do hear the Goodmans though.. think "LIve at last" tone. It might be my fav early era Iommi tone. I can get that easily simply by turning the amp up to 10. Sabotage sounds like a humbucker guitar - likely your JB-1. I don't hear a Twin on Sabotage. My guess is a SuperGroup, JB-1, and JBL's were used. Technical Ecstasy and onward are JBL's for sure. Live with the Birch guitar tuned to E standard? Ouch! Bright and stiff. Lots of VOX amps on TE, no question. Reach out to Pete Cornish for info on Iommi for his custom 1982 pedal board. The new and excellent remastered/remixed version of Live Evil has the 300W Boogie Coliseum amps and the cornish pedalboard. with various MXR pedals, etc...
