The Lament of the Steam Locomotive: Requiem in Pace. A very sad poem, well executed. I'm 75 now, but I was honour to serve on them. Soon, I too will be like these machines. No, I did not enjoy the sacrilege portrayed in this video!
Hi Bruce, Many thanks for your kind comment. Glad you enjoyed the Karoo film. If you look at my site on You Tube there are many other rail related videos.
Memories as child from 1950 onwards. This was, were they "brake the Cape town train " in the middle of the night !! One going North, and one to the then SWA.!! The buggers literally shunt you out your bunk.! LOL. Wonderful times.!!
So symbolic... and summarisies the state of SA today... of how something was developed advanced worked well ... is today now broken and stripped and destroyed.... looks all too familiar.. im just saying
Many thanks for your kind comment Tim. If you are interested, I have posted other railway videos relating to Southern Africa, France, Germany and the UK on RU-vid.
@@Nathan93Baker understood - you know what might interest you ? recently i watched a video by some guy that snuck into a closed chinese train repair depot, inside was a steam locomotive manufactured in 1981
The main problem with these is they are so expensive to restore and so expensive to move to someplace where they would have the resources to restore them. Sad to see them go.
Sad sight, especially since then already rare classes were scrapped like the 12A with original boiler and the 3R with the number 1459 written on the cabside.
Hi Paul, Many thanks for your comment. Also no consideration given for the health or safety of the workers. If you are interested, you can find many more of my railway related and other videos on You Tube,

Excellent travelled from Cape Town to Vic Falls via Durban & Alfred County Railway in 1992 had 3481 on the Trans Orange nice to see it at the beginning being buffed up
Many thanks, your comments make the time I spent putting it together so worth while. If you would like to see more railway related films, please explore my You tube site where there are many more films of trains in Europe and Southern Africa.
Sad to report that Ian Bidgood, who features here, passed away peacefully on the evening of Tuesday 3rd January. Wife Audrey and daughter Heather were at his side.
I was at Vic falls in 1988, drove down from Redcliff via Gweru, Bulawayo, Hwange to Vic falls with wife and our two sons, took pictures at vic falls railway station and many more. I must say that is an experience which I never saw anywhere where I travelled. I love Africa may be because I was born in a sisal estate in Tanganyika territory of British East Africa. Long live Zimbabwe.

1. Yes, South Africa should try to become a self sufficient country thru adoption of time tested Steamer technology. Otherwise it may become another country to sing the tunes of foreign powers without any purpose. It is a remarkable and memorable experience of our life time never to be forgotten, used to enjoy the journey of steam engine pulling passenger wagons. I had a some school mates who were operating these engines both in countries Zambia and Zimbabwe. Thank you
Many thanks for your comments Lawrence. The first shots were taken the day after arriving in Vic Falls. I was just waking up at about 7am when I heard the unmistakable whistle of a steam engine. Hurriedly I dressed and dashed out on to the platform to see the overnight train from Bulawayo standing in the platform hauled by a very dirty Garrett loco. Needless to say I spent many hours over the next two days filming 15th and 20th class locos as well as Zambian diesel locos as they arrived and departed. Like you I have wonderful memories of the three days spent there.
Thanks very much for posting and sharing this incredible footage 👊👍Fond memories of working steam trains, as my father was a Station Master, and growing up with steam 🚂
They should run this service round to Ryde Pier. It would be a massive hit as well as giving access to the excellent railway straight of the ferry. The retired undergrounds should still run giving even greater choice of historical trains.
Connecting Newport to the mainline via the steam railway section is , I understand, discussed periodically as is re-opening the line beyond Shanklin to Ventnor via Wroxhall. But what you propose should be relativey easy leaving extension to Newport on the back burner (since almost certainly this would entail compulsory purchase of buildings in the way (so much for the Permanent Way)) whereas connection of the Heritage railway to the Mainline would be a lot less problematic.
Oh Wow, John Stocker! I did this trip with Union Limited, to Bredasdorp, our Manager was Ian Pretorius, with Carel Mouton, such fantastic memories streaming back, thanks so much. Did 4 trips with them - the Outeniqua, Golden Flower, the trip to Durban & South Coast, Suuuuper!
Thank you for the upload John..this brought back very good memories of Vic falls station as a kid en route to Livingstone, across the Victoria Falls bridge...Thank you
