Congratulations. What is the lowest gear you have on that bike? 34/34? And do you recommend going lower for this route?

@@bengt_axle thanks! I’m terrible with bike tech (but getting more into it), but I think it’s the standard on this bike 34/50 it says on the Giant website. It was fine for me, but I’m a strong climber and love it. Bow summit and up to LL are the biggest climbs, both on my day 1. This was my carbon road bike, which was good, but next time I do a multi day ride like this I will take my Kona Rove which I have setup like a touring bike. The more ergonomic position would have been more comfortable for these longer days. Hoping to do the Golden Triangle next summer… Cheers!

@@canmore-cochrane-real-estate The second number refers to the teeth on the rear cog. It looks like 32 or 34 but most old road bikes have 28. A 1:1 ratio is considered quite appropriate for climbs, but you're probably a lot stronger than the average urban cyclist.

@@canmore-cochrane-real-estate thank God Banff is safe. Last year 12, 13, 14 August I was in Jasper, Banff, Canmore etc. while returning to Vancouver we encountered lots of smoke from the fires of last year. As an Albertan; the biggest unknown to me is if the falling prices in real estate in every other province start to impact prices here. Personally I’m want to take the chance to leave Alberta if prices continue to drop low enough to incentive me buying a place somewhere like Kelowna instead of an overinflated Calgary market
@canmore-cochrane-real-estate
@canmore-cochrane-real-estate Месяц назад
Hi Cole - I totally understand where you're coming from. I think prices for real estate across Canada are fairly correlated (at least in major/popular markets), so if there was something that would cause a drastic drop in other markets, Calgary would likely feel the same thing too. So if you're in the Canadian real estate market by owning in Calgary, you may experience rises the same rises and falls that could effect Canada (or the world) on a macro scale. It may be very hard to both capitalize on the gain in Calgary, and take advantage of a fall in a different market, at the same time. In my opinion, Calgary is experiencing such robust gains in prices now because of its strong draw of affordability (best among major Canadian cities), great prospects for jobs due to booming oil, and the negative perception of extremely overpriced markets like Toronto and Vancouver. I think the best way to solidify any gains you've seen in Calgary would be selling and moving to a different market segment (ie. from a detached home to a condo), or to an overall lower priced market (hot neighbourhood or town to less-hot). Many folks are doing the opposite right now, selling high in Toronto/Vancouver, and bringing those gains to a more affordable but still appealing market like Calgary, and taking money off the table. The risk in selling will always be that prices could continue to move higher; thats why regardless of where you are, owning is going to keep you in the overall market (and not paying rent to someone else). Thanks for the great comment! - Dan McGuire Canmore, Cochrane & Calgary REALTOR

Great work, Dan, both on your ride and on doing a video about it. Can you comment on the pros and cons of the two possible directions for those of coming from elsewhere? i.e. If we have a choice between a Jasper-to-Banff ride and a Banff-to-Jasper ride, which direction do you suggest?
@canmore-cochrane-real-estate
@canmore-cochrane-real-estate 5 месяцев назад
Thanks Mark! In terms of the ride itself, I think the climbs may just be a bit shorter but a bit steeper if you were heading from Jasper to Banff; particularly the climb to the Columbia Icefield and the climb to Bow Summit. They seem to be a bit gradual coming up from the Banff side. I think a main consideration for someone choosing would be where you're coming from - Jasper is accessed via Edmonton airport, and is about a 3-4 hour drive. Coming to Banff from Calgary is only about 1.5hrs. So that could be a factor. I would consider the ride in the context of an entire trip depending on where you're visiting from, and then also take a look at some maps that show elevation over the course of the ride (I think Parks Canada gave me a map at the gates that showed elevations for the whole road); you can probably find this or one like it online. Cheers and hope you get to do this awesome ride! - Dan McGuire Canmore & Cochrane REALTOR

Hey, Dan. Woof! Very impressive achievement. I found your post b/c I've driven the route from Banff to Jasper several times, and find it absolutely stunning...probably even more awesome - IMO - than most of Alaska! I'm strongly interested in doing the same ride - Banff to Jasper - in 2024. I've begun my training for the ride b/c I live in Houston, TX, and I know that all the climbing will be a challenge. With proper training, I'm optimistic that I can do it. But at age 78 I'm just not sure if I can do that amount of climbing over just a 2-day period. I'd prefer to divvy the ride up over 3 days instead of 2 days. I'll try to determine if there are hotels at 100 km intervals (~every 60 or so miles). Any advice would be greatly appreciated, but the primary reason for this comment is to simply send a HUGE "Thank you" for your exceptionally inspiring and motivating post. Thank you!

Hi Joe - thanks so much for your kind words and thats so exciting that you're hoping to do the same ride as well! There are a few stops along the way that provide accommodations if you wanted to break it up a bit more. Moving West from Banff, you could stay at Lake Louise (lots of options), or even at Baker Creek just before LL. FYI the climb up to Lake Louise itself is very steep, busy and narrow - it may be better to stay in town and bus or hike up. From LL, your next place for a stop (with a bed) would be the Lodge at Bow Lake. Next stop would be where I stayed at Saskatchewan Crossing, then you would have the Icefields (Glacier View Lodge looks like an option) and then finally Sunwapta Falls Lodge before heading to Jasper. Some Distances I just roughly calculated: Banff>LL (65KM) Banff>Bow Lake (101KM) Bow Lake> Sask Crossing (42KM) Bow Lake> Icefields (91KM) Icefields> Sunwapta (48KM) Icefeilds>Jasper (103KM) Biggest climbs are: LL village to LL itself Bow Summit (basically a massive climb from the 93 to here) Athabasca Summit (to the icefeilds) Sounds like Banff to Bow Lake to Icefields to Jasper may be a good route if you're looking for 3 days! Thanks and I hope this helps - good luck and enjoy if you do come! Dan McGuire - Canmore & Cochrane REALTOR

Thank you, Dan. After watching - and sharing with friends - your very impressive adventure, I'm highly motivated. How much of the ride is right along the #1?
@canmore-cochrane-real-estate
Hi Roger - it’s not right on the highway for most of the parts around Canmore and as you get closer to Banff. I would say maybe 50% of it (from the Rundle Lookout to near Banff) is “closer” to the highway. There is a divider and it feels safe, there’s just the noise from the vehicles. Usually when I ride I listen to music so it never bothers me. Hope this helps! - Dan McGuire Canmore & Cochrane Realtor
