Thanks for the comment. Yes it is and I feel so lucky on a weekly basis. Gyroplanes fly when others don't because of their design. Wind is less of an issue and so is turbulence. So I fly over the UK's patchwork landscape most weeks.😁
Well done Paul. You're right, the British countryside looks beautiful and we are very lucky to have it. Moreover, You're very blessed to be able to fly and see it most weekends xx
So you were there, after all! I asked one of the organisers if you had made it and I was told that you hadn't. I was hoping to bump into you for a chat. Never mind.
There is not an aircraft made that can outclimb a windshear! Downdraft associated with a storm have taken out many a good pilot/aircraft... This happened to a friend of mine. He was out flying his Quicksilver in the beginning of a storm trying to make it back to the when the winds almost took him out! He stayed on the ground until the storm passed doing his best to hold the plane from flipping from the winds. Its fair weather flying for me! I had the chance to learn from HIS unfortunate choice😊👍
Great to rewatch it myself.......I can remember being cold and wet. Skirting around the weather and following it as it cleared the airfield. Then landing quickly before the next squalls came through. I hope you enjoyed the video.kind regards 👍
I just noticed that your passenger uses his phone in the flight. I would recommend your passenger uses some safety lanyard with their phone. If your passenger mishandles it, flies away and probably goes into the prop. I like your 360 footage.
I had actually.....and do warn each passenger of these dangers. I have some great footage from him. I am still trying to get the quality right. Was your Birthday good mate.👍 Aren't we lucky guys to have found this hobby. You fly over some great scenery. I wish us both good luck in any eventualities. But we are both living a good life. Keep sharing please my friend.
Brilliant flight, as you Brits would say! Thank you for taking all of us along, vicariously! Still praying to get over the Pond to visit our friends in the English countryside and to possibly meet up with you and go for a flight from your Historical home field!
Thanks for the comment. The old saying is" Better to be down here. Wishing you were up there .Than up there.Wishing you were down here!" And believe me I have had those situations. But on this occasion I was confident. I had checked the weather radar which showed a gap behind this approaching squall. Also had loaded extra fuel so that I could reach most other airfields as a divert option. That's the benefit of flying alone. This aircraft has a 94 litre tank and is achieving about 15 litres an hour. So flying alone I carry extra fuel. But I don't disagree with your thinking. Your way is the most sensible and safest option. You are a good Pilot. 👍
Do pilots suffer from peripheral vision or what, I know you have to be on the lookout for other traffic in the air but dammm all that constant head turning would give anybody a whiplash 😂 Just enjoy what's in front of you man.
During your training, you are taught how to scan the sky in a methodical method with pauses to be able to spot the movement. I guess it looks worse than it is. I know when I watch these videos! I think I look like one of those nodding dogs. I've been flying since the 1990s and it's all just natural to me now. I don't even need a map these days as the sky and landmarks are known to me. So I look around for other traffic etc.....thank you for the comments. I hope you enjoy my videos. Merry Christmas 🎄😁
Just a little experiment with some effects software. I'm sure I could make an epic film? This took minutes. It would obviously involve flying Gyroplanes.....👍
How are you finding it, in use? I would recommend finding somewhere solid and secure to which to mount it... and no, not your helmet, as you move your head you will also move the camera and you will find it hard to get good framing in your "flat" video if you do that (and 360 vids will end up a bit weird, too).
I did try it on my helmet....but I started it recording from my mobile phone on the app. On switching to another app....the camera stopped recording. It's good how easy it is to create many different videos from just one. Easy to do and using key frames makes it easy too. I think I need to use large files to get the right quality. The view in Wales was perfect on my last flight. Quite magical over the low clouds with mountain hills poking up through them. I will be trying it again soon. I will listen to your advice. But I think I may need to find and fit a new position fixture. Fingers crossed that the next try is successful.kind regards Paul T
@@halfrhovsquared I fly every week....but I don't film and share enough.... I flew out into the Welsh valleys last week and managed to find alot of low level cloud over the Elan Valley area. It was heavenly but very cold. Wished I had it on Video. Please keep sharing 🙏👍
@@GyroSportFlying - I run my camera on all of my flights. I find it useful for evaluating my performance. Reviewing the footage from a flight, last year, I spotted an error I didn't realise that I had made. I climbed out of Oban, switched to Scottish Information and called, "Golf-x-x-Hotel Lima requests airfield information" :D When they asked me to pass my message, I reported that I was a gyro out of Oban for Perth, one POB, 4hrs endurance, requesting Basic Service. Scottish didn't seem to notice my blooper and nor did I until I reviewed the footage. I don't share all of my video, though. I've just uploaded a short clip from a recent flight, showing the "Terrain Escape Manoeuvre".
@@halfrhovsquared I will watch yours later today. I am Only human and can make errors too. Hopefully only silly little ones that don't endanger life. There will always be someone more intelligent than me and always someone that thinks I am doing things wrong. But if someone else gathers either some information or entertainment from my videos, then I am happy. I don't worry about what people think of me. Practice makes perfect. I am looking at a new 360 insta rs one,? I do want to record every flight. Kind regards Paul T
I love flying a gyro, too. Since I was a kid, I swore that one day, I would get my PPL. I never really considered flying anything other than a fixed-wing until I was asked to do some research on gyrodynes/rotordynes for a work project. During that research, I found that autogyros were no longer the janky oddity, built in a garden-shed by someone who wears an anorak, indoors, but have evolved into a serious and very capable aircraft. Shortly after, I began my training and now have my PPL(G). I no longer have a desire to fly anything else. I wish that I could go back in time and show eight-year-old me what lies ahead for him and convince him to start sooner !
A lot of what you say there resonates through me. I started flying flexwing microlights and progressed to 3 axis to be able to fly in more trying conditions. And that's the way it has gone. I now go to the airfield and fly. Not go and think about flying. The Gyroplane is kind to us sport aviators. It really makes sense to fly such a stable and short landing aircraft. 👍 I think people will wise up in time. Merry Christmas my friend and a Happy New Year. Safe Flying for 2024
The 2017 has a much higher maximum prerotation speed than the earlier MTO, at 260 or 270 RPM (if I recall correctly). I am surprised that you didn't make use of higher rotor RPM at prerotation to shorten your takeoff roll. I do agree with the other commenter who said that you had left a lot of runway behind you when lining up (I was shouting at my screen, "Use the WHOLE runway !!!!" during your video) and it did seem, from the video, that in your second run, you were trying to pull it off the ground, which is going to cause an increase in drag. You posted a really nice collection of examples of aborted takeoffs. This is something that we don't often see on gyro videos and it demonstrates just how quickly we can abort a takeoff and come to a stop and, hence, just how little runway we need to accomplish such a thing.
@@GyroSportFlying - Exactly. Was it a particularly low-pressure day? Even with a 912, a 2017 should be able to accelerate and climb-out at MAUW and you were clearly having some difficulty getting the speed up. On (I think it was) your third run, you had the stick so far forward that you kissed the runway once or twice, so there wasn't a great deal more that you could do to build speed at that point. Aborting was a safe option. I've seen video of a gyro being dragged into the air, followed by it mushing into the ground beyond the runway - You've probably seen the same video. Gyro pilots will often proudly boast that we don't stall and whilst this is true, without sufficient airspeed, we can neither climb nor maintain altitude and still being under full aerodynamic control is not much consolation when pancaking into the side of a hill. On an entirely different, non-gyro-related note: Plurals don't have an apostrophe. (ie "cameras" rather than "camera's").
@@halfrhovsquared it's amazing how different we all are. Yes the pressure was very low at 975mb and the wind probably gave me a slight tailwind component on the first couple of attempts. I had too much fuel in too. Yes there were many different things I could have done to get airborne. I did. I got rid of my passenger. I have struggled to gain height on a few occasions. I have seen many crashes because of just that. Too many crashes will just keep the insurance rate ridiculous. We are like minded even though punctuation doesn't matter to me.🤣 I was told by various Instructors not to post. Anything on social media as it's there forever. But I'm not proud. I think if my videos give someone entertainment or help anyone....then great 👍. It's great to get these comments. Makes me feel that it is all worthwhile. Enjoy your flying my friend. We share the greatest Hobby.
Hi Paul, think we all did the same thing last week as I also flew to check out the flooding in North and West Yorkshire which was pretty extensive. The Gyro is such a great platform for exploring with it's broad speed range and stability.
@@mtdburnett a nice headwind will help...but with the right approach speed a very short landing can Still be achieved.....as you flare ...the massive rotating wing on the top acts like a parachute. A short landing can easily be achieved.👍
Hi Paul,I know where you're coming from,l, I just did my first solo flight on Sunday, and the difference in the aircraft's performance was amazing ,the climb-out after take-off was effortless, it was like flying a different aircraft, anyway, take care, all the best from Scotland, Stephen.
Hi Friend, sometimes when a student does their first solo flights....Ballast is used to lesson the effect. I never used ballast as I had flown a variety of aircraft previously before going solo in this one. Flying in Scotland puts you amongst some great instructors. I hope my videos help our sport and supply some information to those who want it or need it. Gyroplanes require good pilot's who can understand drag and control pitching. Enjoy your flying safely mate. 👍
