I prefer and believe it's the safest option to join overhead. You can assess the traffic and the wind and weather and stay there until your circuit plan is firmly in your head. You have time to space yourself from the other traffic. I usually descend down the runway on the Deadside. I know other countries and even here in the UK! not that many will join this way. The most traffic you will meet will be near to airfields. Stay alert.
