I lived in Windsor Park from 1941 to 1959. I sold newspapers at the intersection of 75th and Exchange. I used to go up onto the IC 75th Street platform and carry bundles of newspapers that were transport on the trains in the vestibule of the last car of trains coming from the Loop. I remember when then the IC and two CSL lines crossed at that intersection. It was a busy place. Thank you for a ride with many memories. I made that trip many times. The line used to extend further south.

I watched this video quite a bit over the years. I had to come through and applaud you for not only filming this steady, but for incorporating chapters. As far as filming goes, I mean, it boils down to the discretion of the crew. Some are against it, others are more lenient. They don't owe us railfans anything, other than courtesy and getting us to our destinations safely. Even if the person was off duty, they're still an employee at the end of the day.

Is any kind of permit needed to make a video from that position? I rode the SEPTA CHW line a few times from Center City to Chestnut Hill about a year ago while visiting a friend, and every time I tried to video my ride from the front seat I got yelled at by the train operator, who also threatened to call the police if I didn't stop videoing! Needless to say I was very disappointed I had to stop videoing, but I didn't want to cause any trouble. Is there anything I can say or do, for future reference?...
@Shuotography
@Shuotography 3 месяца назад
Well in practice the policy in regards to this and the actual enforcement aspect of it seems kind of inconsistent. Technically I have only ridden the SEPTA trains twice thus far. The first train ride was the one captured in this video. Both the conductor and engineer had seen me but neither said a thing about my filming while sitting down and holding the camera on a monopod and both tolerated it. On the return trip, which was on a Silverliner 4, the conductor stopped my filming. But remember that the Silverliner 4 had a rear facing door behind a full width cab and I had to use a suction mount to mount my camera on the glass. So it's tricky to say whether there is an universal policy against filming that's not always enforced or rather I was told to stop because I mounted a camera on their partition glass.

Is this train running backwards?
@Shuotography
@Shuotography 3 месяца назад
Yes and no technically. Because on this line the locomotive for the train is always located on the side of it facing Seattle and the train doesn't get turned around. So on the southbound trips, the locomotive is on the front end of the train, while on the northbound trips, the locomotive ends up on the back end of the train. On northbound trips, the train is controls by a cab car like the one I rode in.

I hope you got permission from VM to do this video? I remember a while back a bus operator got terminated for using their cell phone video while operating the bus. A passenger seen them using their phone to video or whatever while driving, submitted it to news 15, & promptly got fired. It goes against the FMCSA guidelines, company guidelines, state guidelines etc. Just saying.
@Shuotography
@Shuotography 4 месяца назад
I did ask for and received permission from both the operator and the supervisor on site to take the video. I'm also not an operator or employee with Valley Metro. I simply rode along as a passenger and set my camera up on the passenger side of the glass partition wall on the back side of the operator's cab.

Enjoyable throwback - rode Penn Stn to Hbg every few weeks in '02-'03. However, nowhere near 125mph - made it a bit disappointing instead of just cool. You might consider taking that out of the title. Thanks

Nice, pre-cab car days. I'm sure the engine change is Philly made it a bit longer. The top speed on the stretch of track in the video is 125, so of course the train wasn't traveling at that speed the entire video. There's curves & other factors. Like, the train isn't going 125 at Frankford Jct or Zoo Interlocking. Plus, it's zoomed in, it's going to look slower than how fast the train is actually moving.

Any idea how often these used to actually run back in the day when they were the main form of transport in the city? It looks like quite a slow operation turning them around and wouldn't allow frequencies higher than maybe about 2-3 minutes?

No this is light rail, but it since these are Siemens trains just like the new Muni Metro trains, the acceleration sounds really similar. The chime before the announcements are also the same as Muni.

As a born and bred Montrealer, I find it unnatural to ride any form of mass transit that is not accompanied by the whoosh of rubber tires. ;) I'm a fan of the REM. I was on the first train out on the public open house. I've ridden it several weekends since as a cheap fairground ride. But compared to our venerable metro? You can see it's a system built to a price point by a corporation. No art, no decorative tilework, no little stores on the platforms where you can get a snack and coffee...heck, no garbage cans. All the stations look the same: modern but rather bland, like they were flatpacked out of IKEA. It's very much like the Chinese metros: standardized stations that do the job. It has potential to be a great system. But it lacks just a bit of that Montreal soul...
@Shuotography
@Shuotography 10 месяцев назад
I think there tends to be culture to historic and legacy systems no doubt. But then I do think overall the REM is already a relatively optimized or should I say better than average system at least as far as its design standard goes. Unfortunately down here in the states, there are many incidences of the design and implementation of transit systems being simplified or victimized due to cost issues. As in when you need a metro/subway you'd get a light rail, when you could use a light rail you end up with a BRT, and then too many systems ended up having street running segments or their right of way intersecting with automotive traffic at intersections on the surface. So I think as much as the REM could be better, it's also already respectable. Plus the fact that it uses driverless rolling stock makes it pretty rare aside from the Sky Train in Vancouver. Also I don't know how compatible a rubber tired system would be should there be outdoor and above ground segments exposed to the elements, winter weather in particular.

Every time I commute using either the Tempe Streetcar or Light Rail, I always wonder what it would be like to operate these. As another comment said, it sure seems like a fun job, well, minus the fact that there can be sketchy people, but I sure would still like to have it. Also, did you film a northbound POV trip to Marina Heights/Rio Salado Parkway as well as a southbound Valley Metro Rail POV trip to Gilbert Road/Main Street?

I wish that we had this light rail here in Toronto, but the stupid moronic 'mayor' (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Ford ) 'people' elected back in 2009 had destroyed our chance at having light rail for the sections of Toronto that couldn't (and _still_ can't) have subway lines, Transit City (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transit_City ), so all we have two east/west lines one of which isn't rteally light rail.
