As a born and bred Montrealer, I find it unnatural to ride any form of mass transit that is not accompanied by the whoosh of rubber tires. ;) I'm a fan of the REM. I was on the first train out on the public open house. I've ridden it several weekends since as a cheap fairground ride. But compared to our venerable metro? You can see it's a system built to a price point by a corporation. No art, no decorative tilework, no little stores on the platforms where you can get a snack and coffee...heck, no garbage cans. All the stations look the same: modern but rather bland, like they were flatpacked out of IKEA. It's very much like the Chinese metros: standardized stations that do the job. It has potential to be a great system. But it lacks just a bit of that Montreal soul...

I think there tends to be culture to historic and legacy systems no doubt. But then I do think overall the REM is already a relatively optimized or should I say better than average system at least as far as its design standard goes. Unfortunately down here in the states, there are many incidences of the design and implementation of transit systems being simplified or victimized due to cost issues. As in when you need a metro/subway you'd get a light rail, when you could use a light rail you end up with a BRT, and then too many systems ended up having street running segments or their right of way intersecting with automotive traffic at intersections on the surface. So I think as much as the REM could be better, it's also already respectable. Plus the fact that it uses driverless rolling stock makes it pretty rare aside from the Sky Train in Vancouver. Also I don't know how compatible a rubber tired system would be should there be outdoor and above ground segments exposed to the elements, winter weather in particular.
