My tips to novice skiers on black runs: Stay out of my way, I'll be passing you. If you see fresh powder, don't go there, you'll get hurt. Stay out of the trees, they're dangerous, you could die! Remember that fresh groomers are your friend.

I'm glad I found this your RU-vid.... especially this one. I start ski about 5 months ago.. Ski is sport that is my passion... I start ski at Snowdome UK indoor ski. In this winter coming, I will go to ski in Bulgaria... Watching your advice, help me a lots. I practice my ski every week, sometimes with private lesson but some time on my own... Thank you for your advice❤

another data point as an intermediate skier finally teetering into lower advance (with a lot of help from carv and instructors like tom!), and struggled with this a lot... What Tom seems to be saying is that shin pressure can (but doesn't have to be) a by-product of proper foot pressure. But at least for me, feet pressure only felt like they were possible to be dialed in once I was balanced *through* having shin pressure. I do think the vast majority of beginner/intermediate skiers tend to be far too backseat, and remembering to have shin pressure is a more blatant/clearer cue to go way more forward *just* to feel balanced - to be comfortable vs being in survival mode - then things that require more attention/sensitivity like feet pressure, angulation, early edging etc. can be worked on. That was at least my experience. Maybe someone can find balance just by sensing their feet... if this is the final goal, maybe all the adjacent adjustments will come automatically... but I don't think I would've had the confidence to pay attention to my feet until after I had some more foundational balance throughout the turn as cued by having shin pressure. Edit: ok, Tom does address this at the end of this video... *enough* shin pressure, but it's not the ultimate goal.

Excellent. I noticed that you are very good at the "two footed" release at the start of your turns, which Harald Harb uses. Also your bumps technique was similar to the method taught by John Clendenin. I would love to do a few hours with you as my coach - but wait a minute.... I decided to retire from Skiing in 2021 because my knees were becoming too sore at the end of a day on the slopes, so I can't do that... . I really miss the sport !!!!

Doesn't it mainly come down to the squat in the actual turn? If the dude simply squats lower in the turn then it would instantly look a lot more similar, plus it forces the edge angle to be greater when they are lower.

Stacking and compacting. We stack ourselves above the terrain we create under our feet countering to the compacting surfaces from one state to another wishing ourselves a solid foothold. Within compaction the surface water changes state rapidly under precise manipulation creating hyper fluid exclusion zone h2o4. Scary/ fun. Once the words are in your brain you can never be the same. you search for maximum compaction satisfaction.... exclusion zone manipulations... functionally understanding nature= FUN.

…. what’s the percentage of pressure on the down hill ski compared to the up hill ski … as a hockey player we we use both inside edges - sometimes even greater pressure on the inside foot edge - when i ski i try to do that but it doesn’t feel or seem to work right - is the uphill ski just there to trail for balance or are better skiers using for turn control ? thx

Hey guys, I'm a new CARV user. I just wanted to leave a comment on my progress this season. I have skied 11 days with CARV this year so far (quite a few days across the short Australian ski season). My first Ski IQ reading (on an easy green run/entry into a cat track) was 132. Yesterday i did a 142 Ski IQ run down a steep intermediate groomer ripping the best carving turns I have ever done. The next run (Ski IQ was 140) I hit a max edge angle of 66 degrees. I have improved more this season that I have over the last 5 years combined, which has included a number of expensive private lessons (which usually leave me feeling dejected). I literally couldn't carve before this year, and now I'm laying it over so hard I feel like my hip is going to touch the bumps (getting edge angles in the 60s). I'm 100% sold on CARV, it has absolutely revolutionized my skiing. I wish it existed 10 years ago. Most of the complaints I have seen from other users seem to stem from people using the system incorrectly, for example complaining that their Ski IQ scores reduce in steeper terrain or when they are off-piste or in the bumps. Obviously they do, that's why we have groomers; we should expect our technique to get worse. Also i have noticed my off piste technique getting better with my fudnamentals improving, which has all come from work on the groomers. I'm not sure if your team will read this but I just have a couple of comments/questions: 1) How does the Ski IQ levels equate to the more typical way of evaluating technique? i.e. Novice/Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced/Expert? For example, I'm a Mountain Master with Ski IQs in the low 140s. For a non CARV user, what does that mean? I feel like I'm an advanced skier, especially in Australia where the average skill level is intermediate, but I thought that when I was significantly worse than I am now (probably about 120), and only to have an instructor crush my ego and call me an intermediate. As a mountain master with a Ski IQ in the 140s, If I were to get a lesson or describe my technique level to another skier, what label should I use? A bit of a loaded question i know, but how do you guys think about the Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced labels and Ski IQ? 2) I'm finding my Pressure Smoothness scores are variable and sometimes can be quite low. What active coach mode or monitor to you guys recommend to use to improve this area? There doesn't seem to be a specific active coach mode and the video tutorial hasn't helped me all that much. 3) Not that it really matters all that much but when I'm on a cat track or a flat part of the run, say coming off a chair lift, and I have the active coach on it mistakes skating and very minor turns for actual turns. For example, it will drop my edge angle goal when I'm on a flat run where I literally cant do a high edge angle turn. As I said, this really isn't a big deal because as soon as I star skiing properly it ups the target but this can get annoying. 4) I have encountered a small bug where the app forgets to split up days, counting todays runs as yesterdays, which was once across two different resorts. It eventually sorted itself out but it can be annoying when you are trying to look up your run for a more detailed breakdown. Thanks again guys and keep up the awesome work. You've made a believer out of me! Grim Ripper here we come!

Hi, so happy to hear your progress. Thanks for sharing. For SkiIQ 150+ is expert / instructor 140+ is advanced 120+ is strong intermediate 100+ is intermediate 80+ is developing beginner For 2) we’re rethinking some of the metrics next year so it’s more intuitive - pressure smoothness is one of these. Generally pressure smoothness is a result of your balance and control - great skiers make even chopped up snow smooth. Hop on the carv skiers community on Facebook - there will be some great advice you can ask our instructors there 3) yes this sucks when it happens and we will try to tighten up the turn detection. Carv detects your turns automatically but stopping coaching on cat tracks is a technical hard challenge. I’m sure we’ll be able to tighten it up over the years!

@@CarvSki yeah I’m feeling a massive difference. I didn’t think I would get this much from it. I take my skiing seriously and I feel like I was groping around in the dark before, almost relying purely on trial and error. Carv has laid out the pathway to great skiing. I can literally see how I can get to 150+ from where I am. The metrics just tell me. The bugs are really minor. Just annoyances really. I just thought I’d let you know.

Hello Kili. Your tips are very interesting. Just one doubt: at one point you say that you shouldn't rush and rotate your feet. How is this managed when the slope, in addition to being icy, is narrow and with several skiers?

Very nicely presented in a short video. I would suggest that you could have also pointed out (or emphasized more) the amount of edge in contact with the snow in the different positions...when in a centered/balanced position you have the full edge in contact and therefore more control. The other two positions you have the front or tail of the ski in contact...less edge contact means less control. And kudos to the camera man!
