Want to build control and balance on snow? It's about being forward right? - Well, not quite.
This video will help you develop control and improve your stance on skis with Janus Hecht from:
@Inspirational Skiing
Whether you are a strong skier, or an intermediate who is learning, follow this advice to level up your Ski:IQ score - focusing on those difficult balance skills.
If you're a Carv skier, check this out to improve start and end of turn balance metrics.
Janus gives us a few things to try at home to understand what an athletic stance feels like - you can do these exercises with your Carv units. He takes us to snow to push our technique even further with drills to level up your balance.
We hope that you enjoy the video and it helps you take your skiing technique to the next level.
Where did you get the data in the video?
We often get asked to show how Carv's technology works in practice. In this tutorial, Janus Hecht, Danish Instructor Examiner is using Carv's Digital Ski Coach in his boot to give a real-time feed of his balance on every turn.
Carv is an ultra-thin sensor that fits in any ski boot. Janus is using Carv to analyse his pressure and motion live - so he can get objective data to dial in his balance. We've pulled the app screen out in the video for you.

The pressure scheme that Janus showed, sums up all the ski technique. It s the Bible that every skier should follow. Its the measurement of the turn quality in a scientific manner. 👍

Very interesting concept. He didn’t talk about getting the pressure from the heel back to the front of the foot as you end one turn and start the other, which is the more challenging part. You can see he retracts his feet as he transitions, which reminds me of flexing and extending in the bumps.

Actually, pressure is never on the heel.
@ewallt

@@Qian1980 It goes toward the heel at the end of the turn. Carv app measures this.

It’s very revealing when James says you lose forefoot control if you’re too far back AND if you’re too far forward. Is the latter because excessive shin pressure on the boot causes the forefoot to rise and the pressure to go back to the heels?

It’s impressive how you get your weight so far back and all your weight on your heels, combined with folding at your waist to offset this. Is the locking of your ankles normal or an advanced element of what you’re doing?

Hi - I think this vid is excellent - I have the carv insoles - but am really struggling with the correct fore/aft - should my feet ideally have equal pressure right across the ball and heel please - and if yes do I achieve more forward stance purely from ankle flex - thanks - Kev M

This might be weird but it reminds me of the Rick Gore horse training videos I watch where if you have more control of your horse, your movements to control him are smaller.

I will have to try out the shuffling turns the next time I make it up to the slopes. As a beginner I find that the most difficult thing is how to get that inside ski to remain parallel with the outside ski because my weight distribution is so heavy on the outside ski. Maybe being too stiff in the ankles is part of my problem? Thanks for the video!
@bp3690
@bp3690 Год назад
Sounds like you might have more weight on your inside ski than you think. Weight should be on outside ski and the inside should have almost nothing on it. Should be able to make a turn with your inside ski off the ground.
@CarvSki
@CarvSki Год назад
its always surprising how much weight you can have on the inside ski without really noticing it

I can barely get any blue on the sensor map unless I stand on one foot and put as much pressure as I can. Then I can get about six dark blue and one black dot. I only weigh 118#, but this seems odd. Do you think the device works?

The shuffling version of only shuffling the outside ski, to me seems counterintuitive as the outside is the one that should be taking the most pressure?
@seb400
@seb400 Год назад
yes, but the object of the exercise is to demonstrate the sensation of the weight on the outside ski moving from fore to aft through the turn

Before wasting your money on this device, visit a good ski boot fitter and get your boots aligned. Not just canting (side to side), so that skis are flat in a neutral stance but also forward lean AND ramp angle (the inclination of the boot board). Also there is no mention of ankle flex in this video. Ski boots have flex indexes because they are used as a lever to apply pressure to the ski through flexion of the ankle. As Mikaela Shiffrin's mantra goes, 'knees to skis' i.e. ankle flex.

Nice demos by pressure maps. Simple method, but..... most ppl you happen to see in slopes, never heatd of thought of that. But.... Maybe your lessons are aimed at skiers, who want to improve their skiing skills. Wonder if skiing schools around the world, talk anything on pressure maps. Probably not. 😪

You have a lesson when you recommend that the skier "topple over." What bad advice. We always need to keep our center of mass over our base of support.
