Another great platformer of the era was Prince of Persia. I know it was originally released on the Apple II, but the PC DOS version is the one that I have fond memories of playing (and never completing!)
I would love a startrek collection for modern hardware. I own the genesis titles and resurgence on ps5(platinum trophy). I would love elite forces I've only played the first one on ps2. Startrek games are my shit. Hanks for the video.
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed the video. Resurgence was great - honestly the best Trek game in years. I hope it sold well so that we get more original content like that. I've actually never played the Genesis games, though I definitely want to in the future. Next up on my Star Trek list for a video is a DS9 PC game called The Fallen. I've never played it before but heard only good things!
They might also have had to keep the main 3D view small just due to processor limitations. I'm not defending the game (I don't think I ever played it, and it doesn't look very good to me....like a poor-man's System Shock) *but* that particular design choice may have been due to technical limitations. What was the minimum CPU requirement listed for the game? Anyway, thanks -- enjoyed the review.
Glad you enjoyed the review! Yeah look, I did think that when I first started... but I think the system requirements are honestly more focused on playing some of the FMV scenes. It asks for a Pentium 90 with 16MB of RAM as a minimum & a 166 with 32MB recommended. However, Duke 3D which I think looks better and released a year earlier (although no 'real' FMV's) only asks for a 486 DX/66 with 8MB of RAM :/
Did you find Spot? 1:26 Well, Rick Sternbach decided against publishing a Technical Manual of the USS Voyager. He felt that the quality had been degrading with the DS9 Technical Manual and there would be diminishing returns. Though, if you like blueprints then I suggest that you check out the Whitefire blueprints of the USS Enterprise-D. Ed Whitefire was close to Andrew Probert and had visited the sets for research if memory serves. 7:53 I get the impression that the stun setting doesn't stun targets long enough. Which is a shame or it would have been a neat way to conserve energy. 10:52 The mission briefing, as shown at 8:53 of this video, mentions that weapons fire should be avoided. The game has got its flaws but this one is on you. Besides, I don't know if you recall that scene from "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" where a cooking pot gets disintegrated and the alarms start blaring? 11:58 It's probably my favourite level as it is a nod to an obscure reference from a TNG episode about a planet where exiled Klingons get sent and then this game suddenly has got a secret spaceport belonging to the Duras at this place. 16:04 I would argue that this is a game for people who want to experience just how difficult the job of a Starfleet officer really is. Finding a criminal in the galaxy? Finding your way around a planet while your target is making preparations to leave? That is the thing, the timer is not for show. If you wait then the Amargosa Observatory will blow up and the people you did not save are dead.
I can safely report Spot was found and rescued :D I honestly remember the blueprints being ridiculously detailed. It's a shame we don't really get material like this for Sci-Fi and alike nowadays. The Whitefire stuff is impressive, something for me to think about for the games room one day! The whole power level for the weapons is a bit unclear... in some of the levels you burn through power so fast. You got me there! I do recall the iconic scene from Undiscovered Country :D Yeah the Klingon base just had a really good vibe to it, the fact they had sections of the base which purely existed just for world building was pretty neat for a game like this. Yeah that's a good take... as I said, despite the challenges, it's one of those games that I'm glad to have played. It's definitely one of the most difficult Star Trek games I have played... discounting some of the Dominion War missions & late turns in BOTF.
I'm glad you played this so I don't have to. I'm surprised I missed this, as I know a lot of early ST games, but this looks only distantly interesting. Like, I'd watch a video on it.
Max Payne 1: I actually think this game isn’t necessarily “difficult” but rather that theee are some sections of the game where it feels like you are EXPECTED to die a few times before you figure it out. Once you know what to do for the entire game, it’s not that bad. I will say that the dream sequences with the bloodlines in the dark absolutely SUCK and should be changed for the remake Max Payne 2: I actually think that the issue with the story in this game isn’t the reuse of characters , but rather that the game’s narrative relies almost entirely on the duality of Mona and Max. They could’ve dug more into the members of the Inner Circle, interactions with Alfred Woden, more levels where you play Mona’s perspective. More story between Vlad and Alfred Woden. They didn’t dig enough into the characters they had, so everything felt a little flat outside of “When is Max and Mona gonna get it on?”
I used to have this game on PlayStation 2 and I absolutely loved it. After that console crapped out on me I ended up selling all the games off but about a year ago I got a second hand slimline Console and have been trying to get the game back ever since without much luck I might add. Either the condition of the disk was so garbage I didn't trust that it would work properly, or the person who was selling it wanted an absolutely insane amount of money for it.
Damn... I think the PS2 port was definitely good for the time. I don't understand how the critics were so harsh on it. Having a quick look on eBay it seems there are a few copies floating around which might be in your budget depending on your country!
@scruffylookingNerfherder5742 greetings fellow ANZAC 😁 Sadly not…. You will need a PAL copy of the game to play on a New Zealand (or Australian) console.
I really wish someone would do something with the Commander Keen IP. He's long overdue a 3D installment, something akin to a Super Mario Galaxy but with pogo sticks. 🤣
It’s a tough one… while I would love to play a modern keen. I don’t think any developer is going to take the risk… we all saw what happened to my boy Alex Kidd 🫠
I saw that thumbnail and immediately knew this was a Free Radical game! This has actually been on my “to try” list for a while because it tends to show up on lists of good overlooked games. But, maybe it’s not as good as those lists make it out to be! Also, if you like stories that play around with timelines, you should watch the movie Memento. If you haven’t seen it, don’t even bother reading a synopsis or any spoilers, just immediately watch it!
I have heard of Momento but never seen it! I’ll add it to my watch list. Cheers for the suggestion. With regards to Second Sight… there is a certain charm about it despite some of its shortcomings. I do still think it’s a worthwhile adventure.
Interplay made some good Star Trek games. I played this back in the 90s. When I got my iphone 3gs back in 2011, I jailbroke it to see if I could get dos/windows on it and play this game, I did but the phone wasn't powerful enough to do all the emulation and play this game smoothly. I never tried to do it on my iphone 4.
made by the same people who did the timesplitters series. there was some cut content from 2 where he was supposed to be a playable character in multiplayer
0:19 exactly what is a modern audience do you see this modern audience often is the modern audience in the room with us right now does the modern audience tell you to do things lol
I thought there was a more recent FPS, but, no, that was the Co-Op featuring third person shooter based on the Kelvin-verse just called Star Trek. Star Trek is a very high and very low mood space when it comes to games, though that's not unlike its franchise counterparts elsewhere - I'm always itching for more ST content though, even if the most recent has been a low (Infinite) for a few reasons.
I had actually forgotten about that title! I’ve never played it but probably need to get around to it one day. Although I’m not really a huge fan of the Kelvin-verse, but Star Trek is Star Trek…
@@azordash_games Indeed it is! While I don't think new trek is immune from criticism just like anything else, I have enjoyed it despite some trek fans best efforts XD. I bounced off Kelvinverse a little, but i I will appreciate its better moments and for keeping Star Trek ticking over during a down period - it has certainly lead to a lot of trek that I do enjoy, so good times. Maybe they'll finally make that next movie. As far as its game legacy.. I'm pretty sure the TPS Star Trek wasn't a particularly good moment either, but even in the rough theres something good.. such as more trek? I do believe its the first instance of modern trek tackling the Gorn, though, which is now interesting to think about given where some things have gone since.
24 years ago. That hurts my brain. Doom brought me in. Dark Forces made promises. Elite Force showed those promises were real. Today the variety of 1st/3rd person games is almost limitless with something for everyone. I always found it interesting that when it comes to games and the Star Trek IP, the first versions tended to be KLINGON with the Federation being used 2nd if the concept was sound - Academy is another example besides the FPS's. All this time I didn't realize you could shoot the spawn markers/teleport stations for those flying things as one advances though that ship. @2:52 Sadly there is NO WAY to truly appreciate games like these unless you were buying them as they came out. A good example is me trying to get into the Final Fantasy world. I was PC before a single Japanese console existed. I've tried, but I just can't get into it. I even bought the latest pc games/port but it never resonates with me. I enjoy the film Advent Children more . . . .
@@terrylandess6072 I remember late 2000s I found the game installed it to see if anyone online; no one was obviiisly but that tells you how much I really wanted to play thinking that there would be people online 10 years later
It's a great question... Generations is a fascinating game, which has actually aged pretty well! I'd probably say it's more an Adventure game with multiple mechanics... although I am playing through it right now, so I'll try and get a retrospective out in the near future.
When I can get Klingon Academy working on my modern capture PC I am going to cover it. Or I’ll just play it on my retro rig with external video capture…. Either way it’s probably my number 1 or 2 best Star Trek game so I’m definitely looking forward to revisiting it!
@@azordash_games you know I never really thought about that. I guess because I was young but I never took notice that we had rather good internet for the time.... 🤔 but now a days, lol I downloaded it again just for a nostalgic play threw and it took the torrent 4 minutes to download 🤣. There's actually still modded holomatch rooms some people actually still play this game it's miraculous. It took alittle to get it to run properly 😒 but so worth it I truly missed this game.
Just to note that is Jeri Ryan's voice you have in the video, a patch a few months after release put in her VO performance. Need the original CD to get the initial VO, which I still have in a box somewhere! Big shout-out to the expansion pack, which opens up almost the whole ship for you to casually explore, more a simulation mode rather than a game at that point, but if you're a Star Trek fan, it's absolute gold.
Oh nice pick up! Thank you. I did think it sounded very close haha I guess that explains it. I need to go back and check out the expansion pack content. I’m all for some simulation of Voyager!
When I was a kid, I could only afford about two games a year, so I had to be picky and this didn't make the cut. I only got to play the demo, but I still remember how amazing it felt to walk around in such a faithful recreation of the ship.
Voyager was the black sheep of the Star Trek community. It's looked back on fondly nowadays, but a LOT and I mean a LOT of people who made Star Trek huge with TNG fandom did not like Voyager AT ALL. I knew quite a few people that wouldn't play this just because it was Voyager branded. I wasn't a big fan of Voyager but I played the demo and found it pretty good so I gave it a shot. I would say it's branding hurt it overall. Voyager was and still is divisive.
It's funny because I always found DS9 the least 'Trek-like' in they were on a station, not a ship. It was 24/7 shore leave with drama, like Nazi vs Jew drama. Why waste fuel looking for adventure when adventure comes to you? Liked the actors, characters - just not the station(ary) stage.
It was actually super cool to feature both a male and female option that actually mattered as opposed to games like Unreal which just featured a skin and nothing else.
first one was very good, second was meh, abd then the sponge bullets came and it became unsufferable. but the multiplayer also aginst bots was very good
They could have given me a game where you just ran around with a phaser set to maximum, but they SO exceeded what I was expecting with this game. Solid story, good voice acting, great music and environments.
This game didn't get me into PC gaming but it did get me into PC building. I wanted to play it so bad but I didn't have 3D accelerator. I bought a PCI Voodoo 3 I think. But the pre built PC I had the time didn't like it so I ended up learning how to replace the motherboard and install Windows. The game didn't disappoint. I played it a lot.
Quake 3 games look ridiculously good, like no joke, you could release a new game based on the tech and claim its artistic direction and no one would be the wiser.
The shotgun is like the shotgun in Doom, it's not just good at short to medium range, it's good at ALL ranges, it's basically a rifle, the RPG and Shrinker is what's best saved for Overlords and Battlelords while the Devestator is best reserved for crowd control of the weaker and smaller enemies and just one single hit from it insta-kills Octobrains. I am fortunate enough to still have the Megaton edition in my Steam library though, the World Tour, even though it has a nice coat of polish to it with new content, the movement feels off and slightly sluggish and the biggest hit was that it didn't come with the 2 expansion packs.
I was scrolling through Reddit when I saw a post about this game and I was like “they did make a new game about Tintin??” So I came here not expecting to find any reviews tbh, But to my surprise stumbled upon yours, and boy you had no right being this GOOD! Thank you very much for this review (honestly you are better than 90% of reviewers out there), it was very entertaining😊!
I found it an interesting mix of RTS without the turn based ruleset. With other ground based games like Command and Conquer finding success - this seemed a natural progression of development.
@@ReptileNL I had issues with the cheat codes and it didn’t work I did chat with the developers from rockstar games and I said please have a patch or else add Scriptbypass as a cheat and skip ⏭ too. And that’s why my latches couldn’t work my patches couldn’t work gave it 3.5 update 10/10. Rockstar games should definitely listen to fans and especially when it comes to improvements and updates and video game too. And same thing that goes with take 2 interactive too.
Duke Nukem 3d was my absolute favorite game in 1997 when i was 9 years old. Today im 35 and its STILL my all time favorite game. I play through it AND all the add-ons at least 1x a year, EVERY YEAR.
Well Doom 2 was an expansion pack to Doom 1 really. The Doom2.exe file detects which .wad file is in the same directory and just runs that verison of doom. You could drag the ultimate doom .wad file into your doom 2 directory, delete doom2.wad, and that doom 2 will now play doom 1. It works vice versa. Your doom 1.exe file can also play plutonia, evilution, etc... That is if you have the latest version of doom where all the patches were built for this.
