After struggling with recapturing my sketching abilities for a while, turns out creating characters through silhouettes and quickly blobbing things out resonates me so much more. I suppose this is a little more painterly? If you're struggling growing your art skills, I'd really recommend giving this method a go. Great video!
Hi Bako751, sorry for the late reply. I’ve been very busy lately. Anyways, it works exactly the same with character models. You just might need to modify some of the materials on the characters to get easy selections, but other than that it should be the same process. Hope this helps. Wishing you all the best on your creative journey. 😉👍🏻
Plz man i want ask about camera in blender ok What focal lenghs i should use to make my 3d character look nice like in 2d movies bcs my normal camera make everything looks stretchy like hell
Hi light00651, the human eye is similar to a camera focal length of 50mm, however if you want to take out that extreme perspective that you’re experiencing, all you have to do is go up in focal length. The higher the focal length, the less perspective you have in your image, and the more zoomed in you are. In other words, you might have to move the camera back a bit for this to work. Hope this helps. 😉👍🏻
Would love an updated tutorial for the latest procreate version. That blank option isn’t available for the shape source in the library anymore. Tried making my own but it doesn’t have those crisp edges.
Hi rawb-dawg, sorry for the late reply. I’ll see what I can do. I’ve been very, very busy these last months, so I definitely can’t promise anything. However, I’m pretty sure that this method must still work. Procreate also allows the import of Photoshop brushes and the one you need from Photoshop is the oldest pencil tool which is exactly the same as the brush that I made in this tutorial. I know it’s not a direct solution, but hopefully it can still give you some alternative ideas on how to obtain this brush. Wishing you all the best! 🙂👍🏻
Thank you Robinthas, sorry for the late reply. I’ve been way too busy in these past months. I’m happy you enjoyed the video. Wishing you all the best! 🙂👍🏻
@@artofdavidarroyo im a web developer interested in 3d and art , i really enjoyed your video and the toon shading im a manga fan and i think this is a really good way to improve the process of making this kind of art and think about it if there was a way that you could rotate a few degree or animate a comic / manga panel that would be SICK
@@mohammaddh8655 animating comics, or rotating parts of a comic are perfectly possible, and has been done many times. I have a second video on this topic where I showcase a few of the methods that are used for that kind of stuff. The video is this one: Using Blender for Making Comics (Part 2) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xT4A5UMZ2Jk.html Have a look at it. Maybe you’ll find something similar to what you’re looking for. 😉👍🏻
Hi tonyantonellis9983, unfortunately I currently don’t have the luxury of making many RU-vid videos as I’ve been very busy these past months. You can try to upload them from a website called Mixamo though. They have multiple 3D models with all kinds of animations that you can import into blender. I know it’s not what you asked for, but hopefully it can provide you with an in between solution for now. Hope this helps. Wishing you all the best! 😉👍🏻
Hi mfa8086, for anti aliasing you can just use the lasso tool. This would defeat the purpose for the flatting process though because it would no longer provide you with clean selections. Hope this helps, and sorry for the late replay. I’ve been very busy these last months. Wishing you all the best. 🙂👍🏻
Hi burhanarslan331, I definitely understand how it can be frustrating when you have these perfect ideas in your head, but then what you try to draw or paint them, it just doesn’t come to look like when you had envisioned. It’s something that all artists have struggled with at some point. It can even happen to me still to this day. When I end up stuck like that, I end up looking for reference material that might help me to get past that phase. Like I mentioned in the video, I’m stubborn when it comes to using visual reference, but it definitely does help as we need to learn from somewhere eventually. Give it another go, try to maybe have some additional visual references by your side, and I think you might get better results. Also don’t hesitate to study your fundamentals before attempting a project like this one, as you’ll need all of that theory in order to make your shots look good. Anyways, I’m going to wish you the best of luck on your new attempt, and all the best on your creative journey. 😉👊🏻
Hi Jarry807, this method works with Procreate just as well. However Photoshop has more in-depth editing tools, but it can definitely be done with Procreate once you have your render passes from blender, or any other 3D software package of your choosing. Wishing you all the best on your creative journey. 😉👊🏻
Hahaha, yes you’re right AD-Dom. Blender is still awesome in the future! Sorry for replying so late on this one. I’ve been swamped with work, but you are right… blender is still amazing. 😉 Wishing you all the best on your creative journey. 👍🏻
Hi toddmaggio2032, first of all… sorry for replying so late. I’ve been swamped with work and life in general in these past few months. I would say that you can most definitely use blender for patent drawings. Wishing you all the best on your creative journey. 😉👍🏻
Hi sosa3308, first of all, sorry for replying so late. I’ve been swamped with work and life in general these past months. Anyways, the quality of your renders is influenced by many different factors such as the resolution that you’re outputting, the infinite amount of settings, etc. Maybe it’s better to have a look at a good video on RU-vid specific to rendering in blender, as helping you through messages on RU-vid might be a bit complicated given the many types of things that can influence your renders. Give it a try, if you haven’t already, and I’m going to wish you all the best on your creative journey, and my apologies once again for replying so late. 😉👍🏻
I struggle to do a full character shape, but this is still very helpful for designing elements, such as different robot feet shapes or weaponry silhouettes. Thanks for the quick video!
You’re very welcome spinafire, I’m happy to see that it’s useful to you. Give it some time, you might be able to eventually do full characters if you just keep on practicing and applying this technique. Just keep on thinking about your primary shapes and what kind of emotion or mood you want them to evoke. Then you can try to apply some healthy composition rules to it, like having big, medium and small shapes present… or emphasizing main shapes and combining it with contrasting accent shapes. Keep these kind of things in mind, and I’ll think you’ll gradually get there. Wishing you all the best on your creative journey! 😉👍🏻
Thanks MacDonellCashRicher, even though I’m replying four months too late, I’d still like to thank you. It’s true that the fifth silhouette has some paladin vibes. Wishing you all the best on your creative journey. 😉👍🏻
hey david i have Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1065G7 CPU @ 1.30GHz 1.50 GHz with inte iris plus graphic and 16 GB ram but grease pencil still laging... what should i do.....is my pc not capable?
Hi pingpongball969, you can animate in Clip Studio Paint. I’ve never done it, but I know you can. You can use different layers and such, but I simply don’t know enough about it to say how good or bad it is for this purpose. I’ve recently seen how the company behind Procreate released a trailer for their new animation software called Procreate Dreams. Check it out (providing you have an iPad), it looks great. It’s not out until November 22nd, but it looks really great and has a similar interface to Procreate. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wbem5qrH5ow.htmlsi=98k-G3bAquiR9ZXP
Hi pingpongball969, I think blender would be a great fit for that as it also has the grease pencil features to do the traditional 2D animations that you can combine with the 3D environments if needed. You can modify the art style to mimic that of you desired anime trough different type of shading techniques and modifiers. Wishing you all the best on your creative journey. 😉👍🏻
thanks alot bruh... but i have another doubt is clipstudio paint good for animation like anime actually i want to animate a little bit like in anime style.. @@artofdavidarroyo
Hi McCloud23892, I’d said that all programs are fine for this. It all depends on your preferences and needs. If you need backgrounds that are often repeated and have lots of perspective, you might want to use a 3D software package like blender. You can combine this then with something like Procreate, Clip Studio Paint or Photoshop for adding finishing touches or additional details like I did here. In terms of features for making comics, Clip Studio Paint definitely has the edge on the rest of the software solutions. Hope this helps. 🙂
@@artofdavidarroyo thanks for responce, I really appricate it. I was looking for 3D backgrounds to apply to my indie comic book just to save some time. I wouldn't mind learning blender or Sketup or Daz3D but time is very important. I wouldn't mind also paying a 3D person to create my own world which is way better than owning a 3D clipstudio 3D assets that everyone else is using... but I wouldn't know where to hire someone for that? Again thanks for your message , hope to talk to you soon.
@@McCloud23892 I understand the situation that you’re in. Learning 3D takes lots of time and then creating 3D models also takes lots of time. Maybe a good combination would be to learn the basics of 3D so you can create simple environments that you then populate with 3D assets that you can either find for free or purchase online. There are many websites for this such as Sketchfab or Turbo Squid. Have a look and see what you can find. I think it will be much cheaper than hiring a 3D artist as this can be costly if it’s a good one. Wishing you all the best on your creative journey! 😉👍🏻
@@artofdavidarroyo Thanks a lot David, I I actually taking a Zbrush class Online and for backgrounds I think I'm going give Blender a shot as well since I now have a Cintiq to put to use. I do appreciate the awesome feedback on those sites you mentioned. Be good and thank you for everything here and on your channel, you're a very cool dude and keep up the great work and content. I'll make sure to keep checking in, thanks!
Thank you for the kind words MCCloud23892. Based on your replies, I’m pretty sure you’re one hell of a great individual yourself. I’ve been immensely busy these last few months so my uploads here aren’t as frequent as they used to, but I’ll keep on uploading new content whenever I can. Wishing you all the best in your creative journey buddy. 😉👍🏻
Another great video David. The only confusing bit for me was the muzzle flash on the gun. I've watched the other video on how to create a blueprint to allow the attachment of the particle but the bit that I can't figure out is that the muzzle flash is associated with that particular animation. However when you access that particle effect in in the sequencer you're using a different animation. So the question I have is , when you add things like muzzle flashes to one animation blueprint does that mean it propagates to the main skeleton mesh and that's why sequencer has access to it even if you're not using that actual animation?
It’s within blueprints that you assign the location of your assets on a socket within characters. This facilitates the parent-child relationship. Then within sequencer you can turn the animation on or off depending on your needs. You can replace the animations within sequencer if necessary. I hope this explanation helps you a bit further. Unreal Engine can be complicated at first and often there are many other ways to achieve the same result. But yes… you were thinking the right way. 😉👍🏻
Awesome video! Thank you for making this, it has been very useful! I just wanted to ask, in freestyle is it possible to use both the "along stroke" as well as the "distance from camera" modifiers at the same time? I keep trying but it ends up only applying one of them depending which modifier is on top. Thanks so much!
Hi satoshikamanaka5004, you should in fact be able to apply multiple modifiers on your freestyle lines within blender simultaneously. I have examples of this on my RU-vid channel where I also combine these exact two modifiers. Maybe there’s a little mistake in your setup somewhere? I hope you end up finding the solution. 🙂
Hi MarvinJakata8138, I’m sorry I didn’t reply earlier. I’ve been very busy lately as I’m prepping my classes for when I start teaching again in a few weeks. In this video I used a template that I created in Photoshop with the correct measurements for printing. I used it as a reference layer that I imported into Procreate. Once I had this template with standard measurements, I just followed the lines that I needed and created my panels. This method is more structured, so it might not provide the flexibility that some comic pages have. It’s great for creating a comic book page with structure in layout. Not suitable if you want complete freedom to place your panels wherever you’d like. I hope this helps. 😉👍🏻
I cannot thank you enough! I just came across your channel through this video, and this video has given me the most help and insight anybody has provided through silhouette use in character and unit design. You have a new subscriber! 🎉
Thanks FerreusUltor, I’m happy to hear that you enjoy the content and that it is helping you move forward on your creative journey. Wishing you all the best! 😉👍🏻
Is it possible to render your 3d images out in Blender and then reimport them as a png/jpeg into grease pencil as a background/reference layer. Maybe render with characters for reference and render a background only. Then you can draw in the grease pencil art and maybe do the shading/colouring in Clip Studio or Photoshop etc ? Just trying to think how I could do this without shelling out major $$$. This is really useful info on how you set up scenes and do the scene renders. Very organised and methodical way pf doing things. Like it a lot!! Would like to know if there are a load of free assets available, especially figures, to play with and work from ?
My project got too heavy for my RTX3090 to handle in edit mode and last year I stumbled into a way to turn off visibility of Line Art (it bogs the edit mode down to unusable lag times) by unticking one checkbox of something in the right hand panel. I can't remember what it was now. Does anyone know which menu has the visibility checkbox that turns all line art modifiers off globally? Otherwise I have to slowly work through 11 items and turn off the visibility, which is cumbersome. The one checkbox was a real time saver, but I forgot where it was located.
Hola Lily, as far as I’m aware this is still the most efficient way within Procreate. You can always work with the content fill based off a reference layer, but these results aren’t that great when you have detailed line art. With simple line art the content fill does an amazing job and the flats stay without anti-aliasing as they should. It’s still always useful to have a flatting brush though just to clean up areas in case it’s necessary. Hope this helps. Wishing you all the best on your creative journey. 😉👍🏻
3D is a very good tool Look at those railings, Being able to draw them would be horrendously tedious without a model. And if you're a one man band, you have too many other things you have to do to make the comic to waste time doing unnecessary tedious chores.
You gave me lots of ideas. Thanks a lot! Just wanted to tell you that this method works only if you export image by image using PNG format. You can't select anything with the magic wand on EXR format using the Photoshop Addon. You have to combine layers or convert them from 32 bits to 8 or 16 bits by channel.
Hi Hongo Verde, I’m happy to hear that you enjoyed the video and thanks for sharing your knowhow on this channel. Wishing you all the best on your creative journey. 😉👍🏻
This is an awesome excersice and I'm very exited to start practicing, recently started practicing gesture and I could see the improvement after a couple weeks so this is for sure a skill I want to have. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and advise, very much appreciated!
Thank you Marcony, I’m happy you enjoy the content and it’s great to hear that you’re practicing your gestures. They are indeed one of the fundamentals of drawing and will serve you well on your journey. Wishing you all the best. 😉👍🏻
Hi Kevin, I haven’t tried that yet, but I assume it might have a few issue such as keeping the line art clean without interruptions due to minor changes in geometry. With the line art modifier it might also be heavier to work with, depending on the density of your geometry. As for drawing over it with the grease pencil, it shouldn’t give too much issue. Hope this helps you a bit further. Wishing you all the best on your creative journey. 😉👍🏻
Very inspiring! I switched departments at my day job for more creative production time. So much to do alright. I’d better enjoy the effort instead of seeing it as an endless job. It’s a passionate vision and I can afford to hire anyone else. I want to successfully self publish something of value. Very helpful channel.
Hi Brian, having a deep passion or dream for something is a very powerful feeling. If harnessed well, it can help you to move mountains. We all have things in our lives that will find a way to get in between our true passions, but it’s that perseverance and burning desire within us that will provide the necessary fuel to keep moving forward. I’m going to wish you all the best on your creative journey brother. Keep that fire burning within you. It will show you the way. 😉👊🏻
@@artofdavidarroyo that would be awesome! i'd really love to hear about your experience with modeling and especially rigging and posing in (isn't it a pain!? 😂) in blender. your posing and assets library looks insane! must have been hard work to get to that level of ease and flexibility. mad respect and love for that! 👍😊
Hi Weilo, yeah… it did take a while to gain the knowledge and apply it to my benefit. That was years ago! In the meantime I’ve done so much more behind the scenes. It’s also the reason for my absence on RU-vid. I’ve been teaching multiple modules within a concept art course and a 3D course covering topics like texturing, creation of 3D environments, etc. It’s been hectic busy. Also I’ve been teaching my students a lot of Unreal Engine so that’s also been keeping me so busy. I will most definitely revisit the asset library and rigging topics in the future on my channel… not sure when, but you can count on it getting covered again at some point in time. 🙂
@@artofdavidarroyo that sounds great! happily waiting for more on these topics! 😊 really cool to hear that you're teaching about UE and 3D in general. where are you teaching by the way? is it all online/remote, or also at a school/university somewhere?
@@weilo82 I teach multiple modules within a concept art course and 3D course on campus in Belgium. Next year I’ll also be teaching new modules within an indie game development course. All of these modules are given within the same educational institution called SYNTRA. I pretty much give these classes full-time and do my own projects on the side. 🙂 Sometimes the classes are taught online, but through SYNTRA’s network to their students.
