In this video we take a look at how we can use Blender render passes to tremendously cut production time on making comics. With a nice 3D setup and some good render passes, we can let Blender do things for us such as the line art, the flatting process and even help us out with a whole bunch of valuable lighting and effect layers. All ready to import into Photoshop to further process into amazing looking comics!

Anti-aliasing in Eevee is controlated by the Film filter size in Render Properties. Set it to 0 to have solid flats and with soft light and shadows in the same render.

You saved me so much time. I can’t thank you enough. I understand 3D (only basics of building structure) but the rendering always confused me. I like this simple approach for my comics. Backgrounds are a lot to handle drawing by hand.

Hi Jose Pablo, I’m happy to hear that it’s been working out for you. I find it extremely useful myself. If only I had more time to dedicate to my comic making process, that would be amazing! I’m a full-time concept art and 3D art teacher and that takes so much time away from being able to work on my own comics. Let alone the fact that I’ve got 3 young kids on top of that. Haha! But yeah hermano… you go ahead and enjoy that 3D in your creation pipeline. I’m 100% convinced that it will continue to benefit you as you go along. Wishing you all the best! 😉👊🏻

Hi Typik, I’m happy to see that you enjoy the process of implementing 3D into the creation of comics. I’ve done it quite a bit, but there have also been moments when I’ve decided to put it aside. It all depends on the needs of the project. My way of approaching it is to implement 3D only when it is more effective than the traditional way. Also, it’s important to keep in mind that when using 3D software, we can lose that human feel and look to our line art or coloring methods. The trick is to find that balance between efficiency and line quality that can only be matched by human hands. It’s definitely a very useful tool. Also for having 3D references of faces when you for example sculpt a character’s face and its expressions. The more detailed or realistic your chosen art style is, the more useful these 3D references might be. It’s also extremely useful for when you need to draw vehicles or complex constructions from different angles. And… I’ve found it to be useful for doing some of my flatting processes as well. Just keep in mind to maintain that human look or it will start to feel lifeless. I have a few video’s on my channel regarding all these topics. Feel free to explore them at your own pace and don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions with these methods. I’d be more than happy to help. Wishing you all the best on your creative journey! 😉👍🏻

It’s always cool to see artists personal techniques for using 3D to create comic scenes. This process is a bit overly complicated for my taste. I use Blender to create, but I prefer to use full renders and post processing in Twinmotion and CSP. It Literally turns hours into minutes with 0 render passes needed. Twinmotion doesn’t appeal to everyone, but it renders Anime scenes in real time perfectly for my manga/anime style of art. Much respect though.
@artofdavidarroyo
@artofdavidarroyo 2 года назад
Thanks for sharing your creative process TonyG718. I haven’t tried that method yet. There are indeed so many different ways to create comics, concept art and all kinds of illustrations with the help of 3D software. One way isn’t better than the other, it’s all about what works for the individual artist and in that way it’s always great to keep learning from one and other. Wishing you all the best on your creative journey brother. 😉👊🏻

You gave me lots of ideas. Thanks a lot! Just wanted to tell you that this method works only if you export image by image using PNG format. You can't select anything with the magic wand on EXR format using the Photoshop Addon. You have to combine layers or convert them from 32 bits to 8 or 16 bits by channel.

Cool ! I've been using ExR Multipass since 2.8 release. Some tips for you guys, in viewport there is option to check each element without have to render first . Click small arrow (right side of render preview) and change from "combine' into whatever pass you wanna see. That's useful if you want to check how AO -Shadow - Specular/ highlight -Bloom etc setting in your scene before doing final Multipass render

Hi Riza, yes you’re right. That is indeed a very solid tip. I should have included it in the video as it’s very useful to preview your render passes in advance. I’m not sure, but I might have shown it in another video on my channel that discusses render passes as well and if not, I’ll definitely add it in a future video. Thanks for the reminder nonetheless 😉👍🏻

The inside the house file. Was it built on an existing image or from scratch in blender? I saw you rotate it 3d space. So was curious if blender can create 3d space from a photo. Very informative video. Thanks
@artofdavidarroyo
@artofdavidarroyo 2 года назад
Hi Somalli Andrews, the environment was built with modular 3D sets that I built from scratch. You can use photo reference in Blender to build over it or you can use images as textures that you then create geometry over. There are multiple options in blender as regards to using photos. What it doesn’t do is build a 3D space for you based on some pictures. Maybe in the future? 😉👍🏻

After all the video's I've seen about using strokes to make lines. I finally get here and it's simple as a check mark. Why do so many others over complicate things? Edit: Me: Gets to the part about thin to fat lines... Regardless this one is going in my personal art tools list.
@artofdavidarroyo
@artofdavidarroyo 2 года назад
Hi Clap Trap, I’m happy to hear you enjoyed the video. It’s true that 3D tends to be a bit more technical than traditional media or 2D drawings. The more refined you want your work to be, the more settings you’ll have puzzle with. Just some simple lines on your 3D art is indeed easy. Where it gets more complicated is when you want to define how your lines look and act. But no worries, at first it’s all confusing… this was the case for me anyways, but with the passing of time, I got more and more familiar with the software and menus and things gradually started to fall into place. 3D art is amazing, it just requires some investment into getting to know and understand what your software package can do. As you unlock more stuff, your work will get better and better without having to obtain crazy drawing skills (which can take much longer to achieve). Wishing you all the best on your creative journey buddy. 😉👊🏻

Could you make a version with Line Art instead of Freestyle? Anyhow, I will take some inspiration from this video. Very interesting!
@artofdavidarroyo
@artofdavidarroyo 2 года назад
Hi Tuulikk, given the fact that the line art modifier for grease pencil is something that I haven’t worked with yet, I can’t speak from experience, but I’ve seen some very nice things being done with it on RU-vid by other artists. I think achieving similar results must be possible and as time passes, I’m sure they’ll keep improving the feature and making it more flexible. Once I’ve gained some more experience in it, I might tackle this subject some more on my channel here.
@tuulikk9193
@tuulikk9193 2 года назад
@@artofdavidarroyo I have had a lot of problems with Freestyle not rendering some lines and rendering some lines that should not exist. Line Art mostly works with rendering what it should, but it has a problem with rendering clean straight lines. Hopefully that will be improved. Not sure it's worth the time if you are happy with Freestyle. I think I can do most of the things in your video without Freestyle. It's a good reference and it has given me some ideas. Also, thank you for your answer.
@artofdavidarroyo
@artofdavidarroyo 2 года назад
Hi Tuulikk, freestyle line renders can be quite complicated as they have many features that can be turned on or off + a whole bunch of modifiers, etc. I haven’t made a video on my channel about this yet, but I do know a good friend of mine that has. This is his channel: ru-vid.com I’m sure you’ll find the necessary guidance on freestyle lines and the line art modifier for grease pencil right there. Paul is amazing at this stuff and really knows his craft well. I highly recommend his channel for this kind of stuff. 😉👍🏻

How do you get just good line art? I don't need to color it in the blender and do not have photosohop. Tried plugin but have no idea where they are suppose to go in the blender folder or they do not load.
@artofdavidarroyo
@artofdavidarroyo 2 года назад
Hi WhereIArt, if you only just want line art, you’ll have to render it out as a separate render pass as a .png file or as a .jpeg if you want the background included. If you want everything on a white background, you could give all your geometry an emissive material in white as it won’t display any shadows, then also put your environment background to white and finally change your color settings from filmic to standard RGB in your render settings. This should do the job. Wishing you all the best on your creative journey. 😉👍🏻
