This guy doesn't live here. Portland is a hell hole now. Don't believe these near-socialist testimonials, in the video and in the comments below. Bleeding hearts who accept any unacceptable behavior as long as it sticks it to the Man (i.e. people wanting to live a normal quiet life on undisturbed personal property and on clean streets).

Any city is going to have crime. Portlands so special tho...... The fresh air...the greennery....the mountains....the waterfalls. The beach......u cant compete in my honest opinion... Its also becoming more diverse depsite the riots.... There are alot of beautiful souls here ... Im a big hippie and ive lived, On the streets,, all the way to waterfront..... And im still here.... The black population needs to be repopulated ,like yesterday tho..... The racism from some, can make ur skin crawl .... But the sunshine. , the rose gardens , and hoyt convince me ,rhere is nowhere better ❤....

I live in Vancouver WA but come to Portland downtown many times a week. I worked on 6th and couch a year .. frequent many shops and restaurants and have been a Lyft and door dash driver in downtown. I love the city. I go everywhere alone and rarely feel unsafe. Portland is so welcoming with much to offer.

One thing I love about this city is that people aren’t as judgy about if someone is actually from “Portland” like with somewhere like Chicago. The suburb neighborhoods are seen as just as valid, the beauty of Portland is the whole metro area. It’s also insanely expensive to live within Portland proper so most people I know live a 10 minute drive away from the boundary and pay $1000 less in rent.

Important note for anyone living in or considering moving to the portland area: Do not live in any building that was built prior to 1997, and preferably no older than 2011. I'm a restoration carpenter and I assure you that those cute old buildings are death traps. They're built with cancerous materials, there's basically always going to be several layers of lead paint that have just been painted over with modern paint, the wood framing is simply too old to be trusted, and the foundations of many of those old brick or masonry buildings have deteriorated to the point where they literally just explode into dust when you try to drill a hole into them. Most importantly, they are not earthquake safe. The earthquake will happen eventually, and you do not want to be in one of those death traps when it does come. I've worked on a dozen or so of these old buildings and I will often just tell the residents and clients that they should not be living in there. I get paid to make them look new, but they are not new, they are not safe, and you should not be fooled.
@patfinn2697
@patfinn2697 2 дня назад
Oh no! I live in 101 year old home in Milwaukie. I have been renovating it myself for the last 25 years, while I worked on lots of new construction and all manner of reno’s and t.i.’s including the Meier and Frank bldg, and lots of PSU, Portland University, lots of the hotels and apartment buildings and of course the masonry buildings that are ubiquitous. Your assertion that newer structures are safer is not an opinion I share. My house has over 100 years of standing here, that’s a pretty good record. My guess it will still be here in 100 years from now while these osb pieces of crap have long since been demoed. Just my two cents. You can keep your new construction, because as far as I’m concerned they don’t make them like they used to.

If you don't already have a place picked out, I suggest living in south waterfront if you want to be in the actual city. The low-average rent is 1500-2500, but there's also a few extremely expensive buildings. The cheapest places you can find will be the studio apartments/dorms around PSU. They're not exclusively for students, but there's no washer/dryer in the rooms. If you've never lived in a city, then you should move to Beaverton, Tigard, or Hilsboro instead of Portland. They're suburbs west of Portland. Parking is obviously way easier in the suburbs. SE portland around Foster Road is not exactly safe for people who aren't familiar with the area, it's safe enough if you have friends with you. That's where all the best food is, so it's a good place to visit. It's kinda weird because there are safe areas and unsafe areas and they are often literally right next to each other in a sort of patchwork across the city. Just be casually polite with homeless people, they're usually just normal people but with extra depression. If you meet a tweaker, just pretend they don't exist. The tweakers are almost never dangerous. East (central) has a lot of conventional middle class houses and is safe enough for kids to be safe outside without an adult (in groups); it's expensive though. Northeast portland is just nasty. Northwest portland is complicated. Downtown is the same way. For example, there's a sketchy area that starts just two or three blocks east of Borders. We've got homeless camps across the street from $100 per plate resturaunts. It's not quite a ghetto, but there's at least one tweaker and one homeless person on every block. Important note: Do NOT live in any building that was built prior to 1997, and preferably no older than 2011. I'm a restoration carpenter and I assure you that those cute old buildings are death traps. They are built with cancerous materials, the wood is simply too old, and the foundations of many of those old brick or masonry buildings have deteriorated to the point where they literally just explode into dust when you try to drill a hole into them. The best thing about Portland? I have NEVER seen a red maga hat here. That's probably one reason for the hate from that ilk. For a city that we've been told was "burned down", it's very much not. All cities have problems but I'll work to make it better. I'm 70 and bought my first house here in 1984 after graduating from college in 1979. I travel all over the city alone by mass transit and never have issues. In fact tonight I'm going to a concert at Moda Center. The city is very much alive with something to do every weekend. Portland is a city for people who enjoy life. I wouldn't live anywhere else in the US, which I'm sure makes many of 'those people' happy.

@TristanMartinn I did enjoy the positive view of our 'weird' city! ♥️ Thank you. The Hawthorne neighborhood is one of many walkable neighborhoods of that sort, all remnants of the streetcar systems that were removed in favor of automobiles in the 30s and 40s. It's too bad our famous 'Church of Elvis' closed over a decade ago. It was a few doors down from Voodoo Donuts.

@jakew1362
@jakew1362 3 дня назад
@@jazzyjpg that's a little dramatic. the suburbs are less liberal than portland but still left leaning. You have to get out 40 minutes into the country and small towns before you get enough maga to feel outnumbered. and most cities along i5 between eugene and vancouver, bc are blue.
