Sidewalks were made of granite till few years ago, and there are neighborhoods where some sidewalks of this type are still preserved, such as Requena and Paullier streets.
I absolutely loved this video! I studied abroad in Montevideo back in early 2020 and when I came back to the States, I had such a hard time articulating how underrated this city truly is! I couldn't agree with you more on the point you made about how in the American school system, we tend to group things or make places or continents monolithic which is so far from the truth! Montevideo does feel like 4 or 5 different cities/towns all in one! Loved the video, especially the aesthetics! Hope you make more Montevideo or Uruguay videos :)
Never been to Uruguay but I have always want to go. Uruguay ranks very high in the Freedom of the World score which for me is every reason to visit this place. Also the surfing culture is incredible from what I have read. I hope to get out there myself soon.
Montevideo is a city on a human scale. There are no crowds, traffic jams or anything that a crowded city produces. I remember some Chinese girls I spoke to a few years ago and they were "horrified" that there are "no people" as a consequence of living in a human anthill...
Yes I fully agree! I feel like if you haven’t BEEN to Uruguay… it’s very hard to imagine what life is really like here because it’s nothing like you see in media. But great video x
A todos los que se ofendieron con la palabra subestimada, les aclaro q subestimada no tiene una connotacion o sentido negativo, y luego de ver el video el sentido que Tristan le dio en su video es en este caso mas bien un cumplido o piropo a la ciudad de Montevideo, en el sentido que es y ofrece mucho mas de lo q la gente espera de ella.
Algo que nadie dice es que montevideo es la unica capital del mundo... Que cuando te bañas en sus playas (por mas que es el rio de la plata) segun las corrientes de agua... Hay dias que el agua es dulce y hay dias que es absolutamente salada... Y no creo que haya otra capital que a pesar de su millon y medio de habitantes... Tenga la variedad impresionante de musicalidades autoctonas... Ej. Tango, murga, candombe, milonga, contrapunto, plena... Y fusiones de todos estos ritmos... El carnaval uruguayo no es ni por asomo el carnaval mas divertido del mundo... Pero si el mas polifacetico... Humor, filosofia, metafora... En fin, tuve la suerte de nacer en montevideo. Hace años vivo en buenos aires por una cuestion economica y la verdad no me quejo... Ya no soy uruguayo ni argentino... Soy de la grandiosa cuenca del plata... 👋
Es así flaco. Soy argentino, porteño y vivo en el conurbano. Me gustan Colonia y Montevideo. Caminar por la rambla es bárbaro, el agua es mejor de ese lado. Los rioplatenses nos completamos cuando cruzamos el rio y conocemos la otra capital. Abrazo
I'm from Uruguay. Those sidewalk tiles are actually concrete tiles. I live in the US and there's a lot of sidewalks made of concrete slabs here. Not as fancy as the ones in Montevideo, but long lasting. Montevideo is a more beautiful (in my opinion) and "craft made" city than the ones in America. They just should copy the practicality of American sidewalks, though.

Wonderful Video! But there is a mistake, Montevideo is, by no means underrated among the american Capitals, maybe is not Known by the general American public but Montevideo is among the most European , for her architechture, fashion and cultural background.

Very good I enjoyed most of this and Uruguay was already on the top of my travel list.. Already seen much of Asia and know what I'm looking for, especially being especially being a single American man, I wonder about Uruguay and women.. In terms of terms of RU-vid I like the length of your video is attractive and some nice visual... However I have to let you know your voice sounds so so rough as if you had a hard night out and very raspy I suggest you have a big drink of a drink of lemonade or something to smooth that out sounds bad really. Yo creo que se refiere a que cuando se piensa en Sudamerica, nadie piensa en algunas ciudades. Siempre a los extranjeros se les viene a la mente Rio, Buenos Aires o Machu Pichu. Pero a pocos se les viene a la mente o conocen Montevideo, Santiago de Chile, o Asunción en Paraguay.

Buena visión de la ciudad a pesar que te quedaste en la costa. El tema veredas es eterno, por ley es el propietario del padrón quien debe colocarla a su costo. Pero los vecinos no cumplen con esa obligación y la intendencia en 50 años no ha tomado medidas punitivas drásticas para no enojar gente... Se han hecho planes últimamente para que la intendencia la coloque y la ponga entre las deudas del propietario para cobrarle algún día... Saludos y espero que estés aún disfrutando de Uruguay!👋
Una ciudad donde muy poca gente paga sus caros impuestos.donde abunda gente desempleada .y cualquiera hace lo que se le antoja .soy montevideana y en estos ultimos tiempos se a vuelto muy insegura .a pesar de tener adelantos importantes .no lo niego las comunicaciones ,el transporte ,áreas verdes ,iluminación pero la desproligidad y paredes con grafitis y monumentos vandalizados la afean mucho

Bastantes impuestos pagamos para también tener que arreglar las veredas con la millonada que cobran de contribución inmobiliaria, más impuesto de primara, más impuestos domiciliarios, etc,etc a gente que a veces solo tiene como ingreso una miserable jubilación....esto debe ser obligación de la intendencia
From my experience, most of the locals I met were all very nice and I made many friends just by talking to people in coffee shops! They do tend to stay in their friendship circles, so it can be a little difficult to break out of the “cause friends stage” but it’s 100% possible!

Uruguay was a creation of Great Britain as a "Buffer State" between Brazil and Argentina. The largest families are of English origin such as the Stirlings, McKechhan, etc, they have street names, in short, even a delegate was sent to England to be a colony, but they had already discovered Australia and New Zealand and did not accept the English crown, in short we are the unaccepted english, ha ha. Pq tenemos una Intendencia bolche..que se encarga de pintar los semáforos de verde🙄🤦🏻♀️ y dar money a artistas de izquierdas . Sin mencionar que realizan festivales con plata del contribuyente.
It is true that most North Americans (I'm including Canadians in here) don't have a clue about South America. The concept, in general, is that everything south of USA is tropical and covered in jungles. A lot of people, up here, don't even know that down there the seasons work opposite than in the North. After almost forty years living in Canada I still find weird to celebrate Christmas and New Year in winter. Down there is as summer as one can imagine from December to the end of February, basically as in Australia. My beautiful Montevideo has changed a lot since I left and not for the good, sadly. The ugly towers, all over the city can not be any more out of place in a place where the architecture used to make visitors believe they were in an European country. I'm sure you'll make more videos about Uruguay and I will take the liberty of suggest to you visiting the whole country and not just Punta del Este, which it is just a playground for wealthy foreigners. Uruguay is geographically small but it is full of amazing places to be appreciated. Greetings from Toronto.
Montevideo es tan hermosa por su arquitectura , su cultura y su rambla infinita que mismo con la peor intendente de todos los tiempos que la tiene totalmente abandonada , mismo así sigue siendo una joya , imagínate con un buen intendente? Alguien que hiciera lo básico, limpieza , iluminación de monumentos , plazas y parques , mantenimiento del mobiliario público, lastimosamente la señora Carolina "la Reina" Cosse ha decidido dejarla totalmente abandonada , no le pone una bombita ni al obelisco , ojalá se termine pronto este calvario.
La veo difícil ya que hacen 30 años que vivimos ese calvario😢. Montevideo es bolche y no importa lo sucia y descuidada que tengan la ciudad que ellos igualmente seguirán votando al compa..triste pero cierto.

But, unfortunately danger of drug cartels so on is real & we should consider of those & be wise to choose destinations / itineraries before trips !! Using good common senses. I know Argentines are mostly white because of their ancestors . But, it seems Uruguayans got some Italian's influences ,too ! Are Uruguayan's ancestors Italians,too !? I wonder .I'm gonna Google it ! Es subestimada por Estados Unidos en general, al menos es lo que dice en el vídeo, que no se les enseña lo que es Uruguay en si, sino sudamerica cómo un todo, que somos todos colombianos, y eso no es real

Y fue tan generoso en su video q solo menciono el aspecto de ls veredas como negativo cuando otros quizas, aun amando MVD, quizas puedan resaltar otros aspectos negativos como los precios de los productos importados, en gral de todos, pero q en los alimentos y tecnologia deberia no tener impuestos pues los primeros son necesarios y los segundos contribuyen al desarrollo del Pais.

Im not fully sure because I’m a white man, so it’s hard to say. From what I’ve seen and experienced there, people were very friendly and kind. I do know however that public displays of racism are illegal! Although You might get some looks because the Black population is very low, so it’s relatively uncommon to see Black people. If you go please keep me updated on your experience and I hope it goes great!
@TristanMartinn OK. I love your response to this. I've gotten responses like, "Black people are treated with kindness everywhere." 😑🤣 Thanks for sharing the experience. This is definitely my first time hearing of a place that makes it illegal to display blatant racism...wow! Lol. It should be fine but I just always like to ask.
