I'm new to the annotating scene, and I've been trying to figure things out. This was a very helpful video, much more thorough than the others (which I appreciate, being autistic and needing more direct guidance). That being said, I do have a bit of a question focused more on the "supply" part of things. How do you (or anybody who sees this who currently annotates) feel about gel highlighters? I have some currently, but I'm reluctant to use them because I don't know if they'll be good or not, especially for annotating books.
Thank you!! This video has been the most helpful out of all the annotations tips I've watched. I think I'm ready to annotate my first book. Thank you for the book suggestions. Loved it!!!
I love this!! Definitely inspires me to try annotating my next book. Do you ever put more than one tab on the same page for different quotes/categories?
I love annotating for multiple reasons, but the romantic in me loves to think about my children or grandchildren one day reading my books when I'm no longer here and them seeing my annotations as they read the books for the first time and it would be like we were reading and experiencing the story together. I have a book that belonged to my grandmother, she is the reason I have such a love for reading and stories, and she annotated it for me after she found out she was terminally ill and it's my most prized possession. Anytime I miss her and want to spend time with her I read that book and the notes she made and it's like she is sat right next to me talking about what she liked and what she didn't.
I have just decided to annotate and felt a little overwhelmed when I did research on what I need to do and use and how to do it all. I love this video because it give you things not to do because it didn't work for you and why it didn't. Thank you so much! What are you using to highlight now? You mentioned a neutral highlighter.
I don’t know if you talked about where you put tabs, do you tab everything you highlight and underline etc?🤨 or do you have places where you have underlined but not put a tab?
Yes, there are times when I highlight or underline something and don't put a tab. For me tabs are more for referring back to in the future. If there's just something I enjoyed in the moment but won't necessarily come back to it, it's okay not to tab it.
I actually started annotating in the first Harry Potter book I read, which is the third one. I just couldn't get past the animal abuse by characters like Snape and Hermione, without writing down my disgust (I can't stand characters who abuse animals, no matter if they think it isn't abuse). And that's also why I hate Snape now. I don't care about his redemption anymore, it won't fix the horror he threatened to put Trevor through or the horror he put Neville through in general (I also hate child abusers just as much as animal abusers and you can't tell me Snape didn't at the very least verbally abuse Neville).
@@sweetteatohightea Honestly- I haven't read it. 🙊🙈 I didn't know she was a romance author. Only books I've read by her so far are her fantasy books and I LOVE THEM!!!!! 😆💗💗💗 I'm just now exploring her other genre and was just wondering if they're all any good 🤗 After seeing this video though and just already loving her writing, I'm definitely going to read it! I just ordered In The Likey Event late last night...🙊💕 I hope I'll enjoy it. I'm more of a romantasy/fantasy girly but I'm hoping to get into her romance books. I do enjoy romance sometimes but not all of them. I'm kinda picky 😅 and the funny thing is I've just realized that I've never tried this "military/romance" genre before- so Idk, I'm really hoping I'll like it. Keeping my fingers crossed! 😆🤞🤞🤞🙊
Haven't watched this yet but from the title it's just perfect timing because I am trying really hard to switch my scrolling habits for reading books. I am also kind of afraid of missing something important happening in the world by not being constantly online...but I want to read more!
@@sweetteatohightea I journal but I haven't kept a reading journal. However, I was planning to start because I don't always update my Goodreads and then I find myself reading something I've already read because I didn't journal it or update my page 🤦🏻♀️.
I think it's totally a personal preference, there's nothing wrong with it. Sometimes having more books going at the same time makes me want to read more!
Have you ever thought of doing reading sprints? I’ve been trying to read more and sometimes other people reading motivates me to read more! A cozy reading sprint would be so great!
Such a cozy reading vlog!! 🥰 Doom scrolling really is a thing... I'm quite active on Bookstagram and sometimes get lost in all the beautiful bookish pictures and reviews, and an hour goes by fast as a minute! 😬Your June spread is so cute, I love it! have a lovely day, much love from Austria (Europe)🧡
@@sweetteatohightea I haven‘t read Powerless yet, it waits patiently on my bookshelf 😅📚 I‘m currently reading „The Unmaking of June Farrow“ and I really like it so far! 🤗 Have a lovely day! 🌸
Hi! I'm new here but I have a question - do you have any books where it pains you to actually write in them? Maybe particular books that are more special to you? Back in high school (AP lit) I was an annotating fiend and didn't mind marking up those books, but now as an adult newly on my adult-reading-adventure, there are some books that I'm afraid to touch with ink, while also totally understand your stated value in annotating.
Absolutely! There are definitely books I won't go anywhere near because they are too precious! I've also seen annotation supplies that are translucent that won't damage your books if you want to check those out!
I don't wanna f up the first book i annotate that's why i am watching to atleast do an average job of course we learn from practice but still i wanna do an ok job so when i look back at it at least i can appreciate a few things
I'm also a beginner so I'm not going to be writing directly inside my book. It may be best to write on sticky notes in the book instead of writing directly on the page.
Thank you for sharing your experiences. I am just getting into annotating as another way to express my love of reading. You are a joy and you made this new journey less intimidating.
Hi - they're from Amazon. Please keep doing the annotate of this book in a video, I want to start doing it soon but I do not like to write on my books at all, just my name and date I started reading... So if you do more of those videos, and continue with this one I am sure I am going to just want to do it! Love your explanations and exemples.
@@ba_samsoum I did but I think I would need a bigger sticky note to do so and find a pen that will not stamp the other page. :x baby steps over here.... But I am starting to think that I would be making the book my own and not damaging it 😄
@xxDebbyx there are sticky notes that are full page sized. I don't personally use them. I just thought I'd suggest you start with those until you can do more. I also had a hard time annotating at first. I was thinking, what if I want a reread? I would want a fresh experience. What if I lend the book to someone. But once I started I think I like it, maybe? not sure yet. Highlights are a big NO for me personally, but I am able to underline passages and write on the margins... with a pencil.
@@ba_samsoum I do think I am going to start that way or maybe just using the tabs and have a journal to write down the page and my thoughts… whenever I start I will let you know 😊Thank you for being so kind and helpful 😘😘
Yay I loved this video! ❤😊 My journaling is a mess LOL in the sense that I tried writing a diary like my mom taught me. She says it's like "talking to a friend" and I like that idea, but when I tried that, I didn't feel convinced. I felt nothing. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I just write about things I want to say on paper, wether it's small or a lot. Another thing I noticed about writing in my diary is that since I have chronic nerves and depression, over the years, my memory has been getting worse. I call it "I have selective memory" LOL 😂 because I tend to remember only bits and pieces of a conversation. I want to improve that but I don't know how. So when I want to write it down, I can't write the full conversations I had with someone or group of people because I forget it all. And third, when I want to write a lot, my writing gets so sloppy and rushed because I feel anxious to write it all down. These are things I realized while watching this video. Any advice? 🤔? I'm happy to see you again. I hope all is good with you and your family. ❤😊
Hi! I think my advice would be to not worry about it being so perfect. Doesn't matter if the writing is sloppy (mine is sometimes too when I'm in a rush to get all my thoughts out), or if it all makes sense or if you don't remember exactly all the details. Just focus on the things that may be bothering you, or having a negative impact, or the things you would like to grow or evolve into. You don't have to journal about every single aspect of your life, just the parts that you want to pour energy into. Remember to also give yourself grace and know that none of this has to be perfect, and it's meant to be helpful. So if any part of it feels like a chore or it's not fun then shift gears and try some other form, like art journaling.
Wonderful ideas! 🎨🖌️📖💗 I get overwhelmed and anxious about journaling and find it much easier to do collage or art journaling instead. Journaling really can be whatever works for the individual.
I really enjoyed this video. It was very informative, I really liked your presentation style and I’m in love with your book shelves 🥰 thank you so much xx
Thank you so much for sharing tips on annotating a book for beginners. I will definitely try your tips on my next book. Also, I would love for you to delve deeper by reading and annotating. It brought the passages of the book to come alive with your inner thoughts and comments.
Delighted to come across your channel. Just celebrated my 55th birthday and as a single lady I struggle to journal. Every day seems to be the same thing, working for retirement. 😂 I do read a lot for my work so reading afterwards has been hard this last decade. Lately I’ve really wanted to get back into reading like I did in my teens through my 30s. I’ve started to Bible journal but am also drawn to journaling about books. I like this idea of annotating. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos. Glad YT brought me to your channel. So happy to subscribe. 😊
I will say the purpose of your annotations is really important. For example, if you were annotating for an academic purpose what you were looking for is going to be different than if you were annotating simply for your own enjoyment. Informer you are most likely looking for important information while in the latter it is information you want to go back to. For the latter this information could very well be important but it also could simply just be a quote that you enjoyed reading would you want to refer back to in the future even if that quoteis not vital for the novel. Hope this can help
