@@thecumbriaflyfisher7704 absolutely. I fished various stretches of the Wansbeck last year. Deffo gonna wild camp the lakes more this year and smell that fresh fresh air
Great little vids. Love the Lake District scenery. I’m only an hours drive away myself. What size rod and line weight do you use ? Looks a bit like a cane rod.
I also sometimes use a 10foot 7 weight Snowbee rod that was part of a cheap Snowbee kit. Would be nice to be able to afford a cane rod but most of mine are fairly cheap ones.
Good to know. I think Guideline make excellent kit After Hardy my fave manufacturer (Savage Gear if sea fishing is your thing). #6/7 seem popular for still waters which is not a style of fishing I’m familiar with so good to know. I am impressed by your relaxed ‘sideway’ casting which seems to break all the rules but works a treat. Lovely straight turnover each time. Do you use a furled leader ?@@thecumbriaflyfisher7704
@@dmp2000uk hi. Yes I use furled leaders from Barrio fly lines. Excellent quality and not too expensive. They last a long time too. The sideways cast is needed to get round bushes that surround the tarn.
Cracking setting and stunning wild Brownies. Always look forward to your uploads. (You don't do enough!) I live in South Lakes and just started to fish again after around a 15 year hiatus! Looking at maybe trying out Kentmere for those gorgeous trout you catch there! Have you been recently at all or was the last time when you caught that huge one?
Hi, Thank for the comments. Yes I have been to Kentmere tarn a few times since the big one as I live at the bottom of Kentmere valley but not as many as I'd like. I still work full time and have family commitments which means I don't get as much time as I'd like. Also, I like to vary the videos rather than just upload ones of the same place. The Kent has also been very low until recently so not much doing on the river right now,
@@thecumbriaflyfisher7704 Thanks for the update. Yes of course, variety is the spice of life! I will definitely have a go at Kentmere as I love Brownies. Do you ever catch Sea Trout/Salmon from the Kent?
Hi May. For locals in Staveley it’s £50. For anyone outside a year’s membership for the river and tarn is £70. There is a reduced membership for just the river Kent but I can’t remember the price
@@thecumbriaflyfisher7704 It’s a lot cheaper than I thought it would be nowadays! I’m actually from Lancaster, I’ll have to see how feasible it is to get there by public transport. Thanks for getting back to me so soon.😁
Hi May. There are trains direct from Lancaster to Stavely but getting to the tarn would be more difficult as it’s a 3-4 mile trip up the valley with no bus service. The river is easily accessible from the village.
Hi Craig. Thanks. No, didn’t weigh it but I did measure my net to guess the Length. I had it at around 60cm. Was very worried it might come off as I use barbless hooks.
That looked like a beautiful wild fish going by the dark colourations on it.. A fish that'd make any angler's day...well done 👏 Oh btw, ditch that net 😂😂😂... She's letting you down there.. Get yourself a decent solid framed bad boy... Those triangle style nets just don't have the strength to support the bigger fish and you'll be able to net those next big ones with absolute ease I can promise you that.. All the best.. Ross 🍻
could you tell me who controls the fishing there please,, i am a member of wadaa ,,and would love a go at the river again ,,most of them were parr,,we always used to say if it had finger prints on the side its a parr ,,they eat anything ,,just seen staveley anglers
Hi Rob. Yes Staveley anglers. Tickets were available from the newsagents in Staveley but drop me a message if you struggle to get one and I’ll pass you the number of our membership secretary
Hi Tim This was my 9’ 4 weight maxcatch blackstar rod. Very cheap from the Maxcatch web site but quite a nice stiff rod. The reel is a Vision hero 4/6 weight with a scientific angler 4 weight river line. The landing net was a small snowbee rubber mesh one.
@@thecumbriaflyfisher7704 cheers. I’m a beginner but have a van near the Aln and was wondering what kit people use. It’s in my head - my goal - is to fish tarns in the lakes (from Lancs) and the River Aln! Just struggling to get sone tuition and advice on gear. Ido you think a 4 or 5 at? Was thinking 9’. Thanks for this
Hi Tim. For general river fishing I tend to use lighter gear as I’m usually on small streams and rivers. For still water I use a 9’ 9” 6 weight rod for the extra distance and larger fish. If you’re just starting a 9’ 5 weight would cover all the bases but you might want to change that later. I have some Shakespear rods. The current ones for river fishing are quite nice. I also buy from the max catch website. The rods and reels come straight from china and seem very good value to me. I do prefer branded fly lines though. They seem better than the very cheap ones.
Looks a fine natural place for top of the water /dry fishing for our native fish without interference by rainbows . Lovely setting Simon Artley Manchester
I can’t remember the exact fly but caddis patterns work well as do klinkhammers. I also have some suspender buzzers I tied myself that sit in the surface and these seem to attract fish.
Lovely looking river. Beautiful wee trout and then that was a cracker you got in that final section. The bow wave? Could it have been a salmon / sea trout perhaps? Maybe there’s a big brownie waiting…. 👍
Glad you enjoyed your time on the Aln. Such a lovely river with very close ties to Hardys (with it being on their doorstep). To think of the fishing innovations that were thought up and refined on its banks! The wild brown trout fishing has come on leaps and bounds since we stopped stocking in 2015. I’ve had a few in recent years just shy of 2lb and there have been fish of 3lb taken. It is a very wild river with a lot of bank cover but we feel this helps the fish especially in low flows (which are ever more common). If you ever have any questions about the river please get in touch!
I loved the river. Many more trout than in my local river in Cumbria, the upper Kent. I want to explore other places on the Aln when I’m back in Northumberland
Hi John. Thanks for commenting. I’m not sure about day tickets. The club web site for Brampton anglers May have details. However, it’s only £35 for an out of area membership for the club for a year. Total bargain. You can get the membership in Brampton post office. Tight lines. Perhaps il see you on one of their rivers sometime.
