This is a highly valuable video for me, since I've always had the same thought that some teenagers at my age find the state of depression, mental illness romantic and magnetizing (I once found myself thinking the same thought two years ago, when this video was released and I first watch an anime that made me sad for months). The way you express the ideas with your own exprience and information from books is spotted-on. But above all, I appreciate the way you show your objective opinion and not blame anyone for this "desire to be sad thing". Thank you for this video
Normalise "boring" content. I click off videos now if they contain stock footage. (Of course there is relevant b-roll that genuinely assists the video, but I'm specifically talking about the random fast-changing videos that are added purely for the sake of adding videos). Thank you for making us smarter, not dumber <3
I see the relationship between the 'state of exception' to Achille Mbembe's ideas in Necropolitics. I just got Agamben's Omnibus, your video offers a great insight into the book. Thank you
When I first saw douyin makeup and how it puts emphasis on the fat under the eye and almond eyes I was so excited to try it out... then it became asian fishing for anyone but asian people to actually accentuate those features. Another harm in focusing on features. Something I've hated for all my life finally gets a spotlight but I'm too scared to embrace it because I don't want to be seen as a self-hating black girl that wants to be asian. My NATURAL features are not seen as something I'm allowed to accentuate and it's frustrating.
Why are people so convinced that there is right or wrong. It's like saying that there is meaning to our existence. There is none. We are animals. Cellular organism that live in order to procreate. Having a child is proof that our genes are successful genes, fit to continue their existence. That is why we are given time on this planet. Luckily we have free will. We are able to waste our time doing whatever we want. And that's all we we need to know.
Sure, we can justify our existence, but that would be a pointless personal pursuit. But the part that makes empathy so hard is that we are so insecure with it. Just when a child offers their attention without malice, we adults grow bitter about the world gaining control of our uncontrollable lives in the pursuit of validity. If we truly learn as adults that good people aren’t just there, they are made through their countless pursuits of why, and if the why isn’t helpful, at least being there to listen is as good as you can be as a human being. Sure, you may be troubled knowing that autonomy is what makes this world a great and painful one, be it friends, lovers, or something else.
This video made me feel really validated, in high school my philosophy teacher made us do some "laboratories" in groups of 4/5 discussing various moral dilemmas, one of them was about a dictator forcing you to choose between letting them kill 12 people or killing a single one yourself, and I remember that I answered "I'd try to convince the dictator to not kill anyone, as much as I could" which is a kinda naive answer, but at the same time I was trying to humanize the dictator and trying to think of reasons why he shouldn't muder all of those people. This isn't to say that the laboratories were bad, on the contrary I think moral dilemmas are very good "conversation starters" and, for me at least, it's very interesting hearing people's reasoning for their choises- but at the same time I felt bad that everyone teased me for picking a third option instead of the obvious binary. Once again I think moral dilemmas can be very fascinating but more for psychological/sociological aspects than for systematically coming up with perfect ethics
This comment section is dead, but I have to add my two cents. As a stereotypical chronically depressed “creative type” I’ve pondered about the link between these two pillars of my identity. For me personally, depression makes it impossible to experience or perceive things as meaningful. Life and everything in it is inherently and unalterably devoid of meaning. In the absence of a “why,” what compels someone to endure? There are only two things I can think of that need no “why” in order to be compelling/desirable: beauty and pleasure. Bam, you’ve got yourself an artist with a substance abuse problem whose favorite subject to portray is their own pain because the beauty of it makes up for its meaninglessness.
Olivia in her head: "im about to spit the most understandable analogy uve ever seen for a philosophical/academic concept full of jargon" Olivia speaking: "similaAAAIIIIRRRrly"
"Ali responded: "Man, I ain't got no quarrel with the Viet Cong." 1 Later, in an interview with Sports Illustrated, Ali expressed his solidarity with the Vietnamese people in racial, political, and religious terms: "Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go ten thousand miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs? . . .I either have to obey the laws of the land or the laws of Allah. I have nothing to lose by standing up and following my beliefs. We've been in jail for four hundred years." 2 For his refusal to don an American uniform, Ali was sentenced to five years in prison, received a ten thousand dollar fine--the maximum possible--and was banned from boxing. Later, the Supreme Court vindicated Ali, but not until three and a half years of his boxing career had already been lost to the ban."
If you watch “century of the self” and see the portion when they create “psychology of dress”. The portion where they broadcast to all civilians “you all look so much the same” which started the fashion for women And men to “accessorize” and feel the need to compete. I understand where you’re coming from, but I think it’s not from natural competition. As for men being able to “wear one formal attire to all formal events”. I think that’s because women just don’t see men as an equal to themselves, women value men very low. Ask ANY man how much COMPLIMENTS he gets from a woman. Women put this low standard on men. Women put themselves in the competition of attention of other women and to compete for men. Men compete for women too, just not in senseless fashion but what matters most, STRENGTH. Strength to build, to protect. Men have always had to protect, provide, and literally die for women and their family. Makes sense now, yeah?
No, when a mindset is heavily socialized it doesn’t put value into anything the brain can’t sense like gut instincts or loving beyond our self An don’t get me wrong I’m strapped finding a community mindset too, we’re all just walking eachother home 👍
I completely understand what you're saying but as someone that used to be extremely insecure and severe anxiety, the phrase that i dont owe anyone anything is what has helped me get out of toxic relationships. I used to be in this friend group that treated me very badly but my fear of being alone and my anxiety stopped me from leaving and making new friends. I would do stuff for and with them that i never wanted to do. Watching liz's videos helped me realise i did in fact did not owe them shit and being selfish was the best thing I've done with myself.
Asians are model minorities they live longer than white people they earn more money and have more wealth than the average white person I am African American Asians are blending with white people and true racism real true white supremacy is fading. The new definition of white supremacy and racism are nonsensical because it creates a racism without need of hate or believe in racial superiority Racism without racist. All groups can be racist or bigoted colonists colonialism is practiced by all empires in history Asians Hispanics and mixed race people are destroying white supremacy the real white supremacy there are less white people in the world everyday I am interracially married with children. Ask yourself is true racism decreasing are white suprimacist winning. No they are not Nobody has ever argued that racism is gone but racism is fading unless you want to redefine racism. I don’t like fd the signifier he is a slick beautiful communicator but he is anti colorblind. All minorities should strive for respectability period. Most of our problems in the black community is self destruction. Most people black white or Asian is self destruction. Black men are not forced to impregnate and not take care of their children anyways thank you for addressing the topic. Things are not perfect but today is the least racist time in America And the world. White supremacy once enslaved and sent Jews to concentration camps. I have children Teaching that black people cannot be racist is dead wrong really think about it. To end racism the races must mix interracial power Interracial families are the quickest road to less and less racism thank you
Most carbon offset companies that promote tree planting are either being incompetent or insincere. It's acknowledged as one of the worst ways to offset carbon
Women are free to do what I tell them, which gives me something in common with the United States government and people in general, whose nature is to be fascist.
Re: Losing Face "In Japan, the concept of shame is deeply tied to the samurai moral code of Bushido, which emphasized loyalty, honor, and self-discipline. A samurai who failed to live up to these ideals often chose to commit ritual suicide, known as seppuku or hara-kiri, as a way to atone for their shame and restore their honor."
This is the very first time I'm commenting on a RU-vid Video. I feel so connected with you because this is also a topic I have struggled so much with because I can't come to an ultimate conclusion for myself (esp. bc the majority of us are the benefited stakeholders, but at the same time I can't fathom if I were the legislator, under the circumstances, the pressure and the urgency to come up with an answer, what would I say to the citizens and what reasons would I use to justify my answer) I'm actually studying for my law exam, jurisprudence, so it was such a delight to come across your video. You could also look up Austin's view of what constitute a legal system, ie. sovereign commands backed by threats. There is a Chinese saying that goes 誰大 誰惡 誰正確 which basically means whoever is more powerful, whoever possesses more force, he is then the right one. I still find it so hard to accept that this is the unfortunate truth (nobody talks about the lives of the natives when the Americans stepped foot on the lands of the indigenous tribes). I guess it's just really sad to see whoever dominates dictates morality, perhaps it might just be coincidental that most of our moral views align when our morality might not be the most "moral", but subconsciously, this works for all of us, so why not. This is why I prefer Aristotle's Virtue Ethics more, it's not a formula nor it is certain, but it is very clear that virtue is the final answer for us. It is only by exercising virtues, we flourish in humanity. Still, this is just my temporary conclusion for now, I know it is optimistically impracticable but I guess by spreading kindness, love, and awareness, we can then make a change. I hope you get this message because I also want to thank you for putting so much effort into your videos, it really helps to make the world a bit better <3 stay pessimistically optimistic haha, don't give up!
Thank you for your time and effort for making this very important message. I really appreciate you and your commitment to truth. It takes alot of courage, keep it up!
Havent watching the complete video yet so you might refute my point later but this slow movement towards an increasing no. of men being written by a woman to become a better commodity in this market is in my opinion better because if the inherent initial idea of a "masculine man" is overall detrimental then isnt it good if there is change? isnt it better that there are more men written by a woman? of course the part where they change to be a better commodity is concerning but then again that is a perspective.
Applied ethics means applying ethical theories to real-life problems. Since you're talking about a thought experiment, it can't be applied ethics. Not only is a thought experiment not a real-life problem, it lives in the realm of theory. It's a construct used to make a point or ask a question. The distinction isn't applied ethics/metaethics, it's applied ethics/ethics/metaethics. So if you tried to answer the question in the thought experiment, you'd be doing ethics. Not to be a pedant, but I'm a philosopher. It's my literal job to be pedantic.
I just don't get why people don't get abortions earlier. If you're not planning on keeping the baby, then end it as quickly as possible. Waiting 7-8 months to abort a baby is a long fucking time. Maybe they didn't notice they were pregnant, but 5 months in and still not knowing? I'm not buying that. The only time I can justify an abortion that late is if the baby have something that has no cure. But by then it's euthanasia, not abortion.
For me, I found the solution to this in my Christian worldview. I believe that all human beings are made in the image of God and are thus worthy of dignity and kindness, including yourself. However I also believe that all human beings have sinned and are responsible for their sins, including yourself. It is only God's job to judge what is right and wrong. It is my job to embody God’s love and grace for all people, even when they do wrong. To always put yourself first is to make yourself into an idol of worship rather than worship in God. But to always put others first is an act of idolatry for others' approval, and can still be wrong. By externalizing both the reason for loving others and for caring for yourself, you remove any personal opinions and feelings from they justification for doing what is best both for yourself AND your community.
