Looks incredible. Amazing work done on such an old game. Can I just ask, the framerate looks a bit low in the large battle in the video. Is this due to the game engine struggling to keep up, or would a powerful PC/CPU/GPU result in a good FPS and smoother gameplay? Thanks.
An update to the graphics engine was introduced a few months ago, which takes advantage of the power of the GPU. The result is a very good level do FPS even in denser scenarios with more detailed objects. At the time of this video, the update was not yet available.
We added in the new options, controlled by the interface called "Babu Frik," the joystick emulator for keyboard, so you can play without joystick. We also had the mouse emulator, but we removed it because it is almost unplayable. I strongly recommend using a joystick.

don't get too excited guys, unless you have one of those Alienware PC's you will never be able to run this thing at anything that even resembles a framerate, 60FPS=smooth, 30FPS=playable, this runs at about 2 to 3 FPS(frames per second)i tried EVERYTHING that was suggested including XWAHACKER and NOTHING made this thing playable ! good idea for a mod, terrible execution. also good luck trying to post anything on their site, first you have to figure out how to get the registration process to work? most normal sites would just let you register without trying to solve some stupid ass puzzle just to begin your registration but not xwaupgrade! i have gone back to playing X-wing Alliance vanilla and am better for it!
So by the end of this vid we should admit : Legends is the only TRUE SW and they took a lesson from FS2 Open to actualy UPDATE the game to modern specs and have massive mod support
Now I have to try it. I still remember exiting the hangar in the original. It was just, "Wow this looks good." I'm really glad these guys did a redux. Looks great.
Yes it does. You may download it both from Gog and Steam. I prefer the GoG version because it is easier to handle, you can install it wherever you want and it is more like the original... but once XWAU is installed, the game is identical on both versions.
Most kids wanted to be Luke Skywalker. When I first played this at 19, even as an adult I wanted to be Ace Azameen. I haven't played this in close to 12 years. I think I need to revisit it again....
It's truly incredible what all the team has done with this engine. I've only played X-Wing vs TIE Fighter before and one thing I'd really like to do with my friends is to fight a Super Star Destroyer. Can we do that in XWAU?
Yes. XWA is the sequel of XvT. Every crafts present in the prequel game are in this game. XWAU has updated all 3d models: the Super Star Destroyer is one of them.
Thank God for the Upgrade. I loathed the Cockpit in X-wing alliance. I loved everything else, but the cockpit was its heart. The gameplay and the freedom its soule. And it broke my heart. I never came to accept it. Buy the XWAUP team sure did a grea jobb correcting this! And the game now looks better than the scinematics.
Good God. I remember downloading individual ships around 2008. So many things weren't done that it looked off with the mixture of new and old. This project has gone insane. TrackIR, VR, and I'm curious how VoiceAttack does with it (I'd love to find a way to rip Emkay's and R2's voices/beeps to respond to commands). The only thing that would make this project better is if Steam made this a free DLC or added the workshop so it could be downloaded directly from there.
The 23 year old game engine , the game story mod and now the game models and remastering addons.. fantastic teamwork. Its hard to believe the level of detail those ships have, that's far beyond what the rogue squadron / battle for naboo / SW starfighter have not to mention the UI overlays. It is just nuts!
Thats really nice. And it fixes (to some extend) the major flaw I had with this game: It was way too slow for an X-Wing-simulator! There just wasnt any feeling of speed in the original game, even the original X-Wing game from the 90s was better in that. This one looks way more powerfull now.
Oh man, I somehow never put together the fact that the Empire's cutting edge next-generation space superiority starfighters were controlled with basically-a-space!WiiU-controller, lol. This looks great!
It's so cool to see that people are still dedicated to this game. I fondly remember spending countless hours flying the campaign and custom missions pretending I was a character in the universe.
Diegetic joustick is a function that allows certain parts of the cockpit to move in sync with the player's joystick. We have the movement of the joystick, the throttle lever and the hyperspace levers. This feature is normal in modern simulators, but it is a new entry for xwa.
Sure looks amazing! Too bad installing the 2020 Mega and the V5 upgrade patch bricked the Fresh install of XWA on my rig. Every time I click play, the game shuts down. Sofa king bummed.
I suppose that you own the Steam version of the XWA game. Never start the game from Steam. Use the Desktop icon created with XWAU installation. If you have trouble with the installation of the patch, please use the www.xwaupgrade.com forum for help!
