Actuarial science student with a unique perspective.
Hi! My name is Bella Teal. On this channel, I post informative and interesting videos about the actuarial profession from a student's perspective!
About me: -Aspring FCAS -Recently graduated from UW-Madison with majors in "Actuarial Science" and "Risk Management and Insurance" -Passed exams FM, P
I decided to make this channel due to the limited amount of information about the actuarial science career online. I hope these videos help you decide if actuarial science is right for you! If you have any actuarial questions that you'd like to get answers to, comment on one of my videos so I can answer and maybe even dedicate a video to it!
Disclaimer: Bella is not a professional advisor. Any advice given is from personal experience and should not be followed without consideration of one’s own goals.
Can you do a video on how to land internships. I don’t have any I. My area so they have to be remote and I’m having a really hard time trying to track some down.
I actually already made a video about this! Here’s the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p3dIDRsP4Tg.html. Let me know if you have any specific questions!
Hi I am currently a 3rd year engineering student thinking of taking up actuarial science . Could you suggest what I should focus on first ? [I mean in terms of exams or excel or programming ]
Hi! I would recommend taking an exam first to see if you like the material and studying process, since you’ll have to take many exams as an actuary. If you take an exam and decide you do want to pursue actuarial science, then I’d suggest working on your coding and Excel skills. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching 😊
Hey Bella I’m a sophomore and switched my major to mathematics with a focus on actuarial science and a business administration minor. Like watching your videos, but I think it would be really beneficial to make a video critiquing the resume that got you your first internship. Thanks for reading.
Hi! I'm pondering on choosing actuarial science as a masters course in Hungary and your videos are very helpful. In your last video where you mentioned a few of your school projects, I think that was the most interesting one for me. To see what this field is really about. I would love more of that content (work or school projects)! Well, staying a subscriber anyway:)
Hi! Thank you so much for subscribing 🥰 I will definitely be posting about my work when I start my full-time job later this year! I can try to post more content about my school projects in the coming months, as well!
3 interviews is pretty good, actually! I could definitely make a video about interviews specifically in a future video. For now, you could take a look at this article about resume tips to make sure that it’s as optimized as possible: inspiringactuaries.com/actuarial-resume-tips/. Best of luck! 🤞🏼
So, learning coding like R, SQL, and Python, will help me understand AI better? I am working on these languages and believe that I am getting better each day.
I’d love to see her response to this question as well. From what I’ve heard from the majority of people is it use to be pass atleast 1 but now it’s preferred you have 2 passed. Most jobs want you to have 2 passed. But of course some don’t pass any while in college and still get a job
Hi! The minimum is usually one exam to be considered for an actuarial job, but the new “norm” is having passed two exams by graduation. Hope this helps!
Hey Bella! Can you please make a video of complete step by step process of actuarial science video. How many exams are there. What are the criteria to be fulfilled before giving the first exam. Also, books recommendations. I am very confused how to get started and prepare for it.
I follow you from Turkey as an actuarial student. Unfortunately, in my country, this department does not receive enough attention and value. Actually, in one sense, this is an advantage. In addition to English, I am learning German and studying for actuarial exams. However, I took a break from school for a few years for personal reasons. Do you think it is a problem in the eyes of the business world to graduate from a 4-year undergraduate program in 6-7 years? What do employers think about this situation? I wonder about this. Thanks for the videos<3
Hi! Thanks so much for watching all the way from Turkey 😃 I think it is better to graduate with a degree than to not graduate with a degree if you want to pursue actuarial science, no matter how long it takes. When applying to jobs, I'd probably leave off the date you started your degree on your resume and only put on your graduation date. Hope this helps!
Love the energy and occasional humor. A lot of actuary videos are very mundane (as expected lol). I know the vids are for knowledge not entertainment but its refreshing to see your unique style for this subject. it seems you have fun/enjoy making these videos which makes the viewing experience way better!
1:06 1. Most actuaries work in the insurance field 2. 3 main fields actuaries work in: life, health, property/casualties 3. Actuaries on a quarterly basis & life insurance is repetitive while health insurance is heavily regulated while consultant actuaries often work long hours 4. Should learn coding to manipulate data & Excel 5. Finance, business law, accounting, advanced mathematics (calculus) all are a part of actuaries’ jobs 6. Actuaries work more with insurance rather than the technical/mathematical aspects of the field 7. Must take 10 actuarial exams 8. 2 organizations (SOA for life/health insurance and CAS for property/casualty) actuaries must choose from after taking 2 exams 9. Actuarial exams have very low pass rates :( 10. Actuarial science is a very narrow, niche field. 11. Actuarial science is a creative field in the way that new insurance product/calculation innovations can be discovered
Hi Bella. It's nice to meet you. I recently graduated from York University in Actuarial Science and love your videos! Congratulations on obtaining employment at Allstate. I recently obtained an offer from RBC as an Actuarial Analyst. I was wondering why you chose Allstate? Can you make a video explaining why? Thank you.
Hi Andrew! Thanks so much for watching ☺ Congrats on your offer from RBC!! 🎉🎉 My reasoning to why I chose Allstate is pretty short - they are P&C (which is what I want to go into), they offer remote work options, have exam support, are a big company with a good reputation, and the people have been great. I also felt like the interviewers saw what I can bring to the table, and I appreciate that.
Hii I'm a student of +1 commerce from india, can u please help me Can i do CA and Acturial science both. Is there any benefit of it. I don't know what to do I'm confused 😵💫
Great info! Kinda off topic but wondering if you have an opinion on taking FAM or SRM first? I have heard both sides and I'm not sure which one I'm gonna want to start preparing for next after I pass P in September.
Hi Jack! I haven't taken either of these exams, so I can't say for sure. But I usually like to start taking exams with topics I am more familiar with/whose content seems easier to learn. There's probably not one right answer - it all comes down to personal preference 😊
Just came across this post that could help you decide! www.linkedin.com/posts/jeff-yang-fsa_actuary-actuaries-examsrm-activity-7206345323470876672-eoN7?
Moreover, Can u explain difference between the roles of Data Scientist and An Actuary ? (Including Salary & Work Life balance) And is there any similarities in both carrers ?
UEC stands for "University Earned Credit," which means that the credit you get for completing the class counts as passing the exam. Thanks for watching! 😊
Hi Bella, I'm currently an undergrad finance major working as a finance and accounting intern, but I was recently exposed to a workshop hosted by the actuarial club I recently joined, and tbh it caught my attention. I want to explore more opportunities. Is there any advice you can give me on how to pursue actuarial science internships or something along those lines. I will be a senior this upcoming fall, so idk if it's too late to switch interests. Any advice would help!
Hello! Let me start off by saying that plenty of actuaries didn't find out about the career path or start taking exams until after college, so it is not too late to switch. It's really great that you found the actuarial club - I'd recommend you keep attending! I would suggest applying for an actuarial internship the summer after you graduate, and tailoring your resume to show your actuarial skills (coding, classes, projects, etc). I would also highly recommend taking your first actuarial exam - either exam FM or exam P. Let me know if you have any other questions! 😊 Best of luck! 🍀
Hey bella i am avika from india i really wannt become an actuary can you just explain your experience of yours so that i can be more affirm in my self as in india it os not discused carrer not much ppl know about it
Hi Avika! I've made a few videos about my experience as an actuary, including a day in the life of an actuarial intern. You can watch it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-loT4TDU7P_4.html&lc=UgwMCgARH4E4VLZOcEV4AaABAg.A3lFScTevX5A3vgW-X7tmG
Math was fun for me until they replaced all the numbers with letters. I have a hard time remembering names. Numbers work great though, they never fail me.
im not good at anything i do and always manage to mess things up i cant even do simple tasks right so thats why i dont like math in fact i dont like anything really
Hi i am right now in 11th and i am interested in being an actuarial. I am from india and i really want you to make a video on difference between IAI and IFOA.
Hi! Thank you so much for watching 🙂 Because I am in the US, I don’t know much about the IAI and IFOA. Perhaps you could try reaching out to a professor/teacher/actuary in India!
