Thank you for this. I figured out my tags were bringing people into my videos from the wrong kind of video suggestions and they would click off and thumbs down. Changed my titles and a bit better retention now and less thumbs down!
How does google measure UX? e.g I had a good desktop layout, but on mobile, even though it was responsive, single letters oddly scattered to the left of an image only on some devices., I was still ranking OK in most keywords, however I still went ahead and fixed this layout issue - Does google crawl the mobile version and analyze the content and how its layed out to detect anomalies like this? Have Google publically come out and said what they scan for on the Mobile layout ?
Google will never come out and tell you specifically what they scan because then everyone will only do those things. Also, their engineers work on different aspects of the algorithm and it's constantly being tweaked. Now that they've turned up the dial on machine learning, it feels like the results have gotten dumber, not smarter. To answer your one question, YES mobile is the default, they scan it with Googlebot, which replicates what it will look like in a browser. What they HAVE said is they have a way to track the entire search experience end to end, without Google Analytics, so I'm guessing that means anonymized data from Chrome and Android. I would imagine that they look at what people scroll to, and have general rules in place for good/bad layout that apply to every site. I would think the non-wrapping letters on mobile would be something you rightly cleaned up, don't know that Googlebot would find that, but users would, and they might scroll past that. I would suspect that conversions like contact form submissions, quick bounces, and links to the page also indicate low/high quality. Generally I see a big correlation between well designed sites and high ranking sites, so there is definitely something to that.
It makes the site GDPR compliant, but I don't think Google views a site with a cookie notice as more helpful to the user. Still it's a good idea to have.

I have a website and marketing plan not WordPress with go daddy . Is there any way I can delete the robot.txt file on here as its stopping google from crawling my pages ?
It depends on what your GoDaddy setup looks like - but if you have a link to the File Manager in your hosting the robots.txt would be right in the top level folders. You can delete it from there. If your plan looks different, there may be a setting that is preventing Googlebot from crawling if your site is hosted with GoDaddy. I would confirm you are hosted there first. I know GoDaddy offers a marketing plan called Get Found but this is just Citation listings, similar to Yext. I would need to know more but if you know where you’re hosted you can find where to either turn off the crawl blocking or delete robots.txt. Some sites will have a setting, Allow this site to be crawled by search engines. That’s robots.txt. What platform is your site built on? Not the hosting, but what type of tool did you use to build the site? I can find out where to change the crawl blocking from there if I know that.
Hey I own a small junk removal business. We were consistently #2 on the map pack for our entire city. We recently redid our website because it was old & our phone stopped ringing completely. We were bumped from the map pack & sales have been minimal. I understand what I need to do the get my ranking back, but why did it drop in the first place? We used the same domain & just renovated it
The map pack and your site might be unrelated. The Map is mostly proximity based, it's a directions tool. If you are a single location and don't have a physical office location on the map, it's going to be tougher if you care going against people with a location, especially if it is nearer the city or cities you are targeting. I have heard that if you request video verification with a Google rep this can help (I haven't confirmed this through experience yet). You'd have to find the "contact Google support" link on a Google Help page and request verification. If you search on RU-vid there are a few videos on how to do this. Aside from that, be sure to fill out your Google My Business profile completely and then have photos of your truck with your logo on it in photos, have photos of your team wearing work shirts with the logo on it. Show that you are real by having a Yelp, all the social media profiles and link them in your GMB listing, and build citation links. Any sites like Expertise or ThreeBest Rated where you can get listed for best junk removal in your metro area will help too. These can help. The reason why anything drops in Google these days is they are using machine learning to switch up rankings and businesses without a actual location are going to be at a disadvantage. If you kept all the same pages on your site that you had before and didn't switch the URLs of the individual pages, that would not have been the issue.
Hello, great video. I do websites in my spare time. Is that date important to Google? I honestly don't know how my own website is displaying a date in the search results? Could it be from the seo plug in I'm using? Seems most sites don't have a date and I'd like to remove it. Any suggestions?
You can likely remove the date from articles if you know where to take it out in the template files. This will vary depending on the blogging platform and the theme template files. Google doesn't really look at the date much these days. Years ago, people thought "fresh articles" were a sign of quality, but Google knows when they first discover a page. Why your site is displaying a date in search results is probably in the theme settings or theme template files.

Hi John, I have a couple of questions for you in this topic: I've researched that 404 pages do not hurt your seo rankings, is this true? Also, what if you are a retailer who has hundreds of pages for clothes and at some point these pages stop showing inventory and they are no longer relevant, what should we do with those pages, add a 301 redirect to our home page?
Hi David: An excessive amount of 404s could be seen as a site quality issue by Google, I would try to minimize those. Instead of redirecting to the home page on a retail site, I would redirect to the product category, as site visitors might find that more useful, and they can find a replacement for what they were looking for.
Thanks for John. I want to make a professional directory listing site for elder law attorneys in California. My idea is to title each page by their name and city and specialties (either estate planner, or trust litigator, or trust administration attorney). Then I want to write a short bio, and maybe link out to their LinkedIn and to their Yelp page and their Google review page, and of course to their website. Then if I do that 20,000 times maybe visitors will come to my site when they're looking for an attorney and then maybe I can sell display ads. I've never built a website before. But I've been reading that duplicate content is a problem and also AI writing/detection is a problem. I'm hoping I can just copy their bio from their website and paste in my directory site, and then link back to them. Some might get mad that I'm copying their info, but most will recognize I'm driving traffic back to them. But that might give me some duplicate content penalties (even though I'll be adding add'l info and will be using different titles). So, my other option is to learn to use AI and paraphrase their website bio and put it on my site, and link back to them. But then I've been reading that might give me an AI penalty and stop traffic from coming to my site. So finally, I could just rewrite 20,000 bios and I wouldn't have duplicate content problems or AI problems. And I also would never do more than 50 bios before I gave up. Any thoughts on which of my scenarios has the best chance of success?
I would not use AI to rewrite their bios. With attorneys, wording is very important, so I would cut-and-paste before I used AI to remix the content. Also, instead of running banner ads, it might be a better monetization strategy to get organic traffic, then sell premium profiles to law firms and lawyers. The titles are a good idea, the links to social profiles, also good. For a directory like this, I would not worry about the duplicate content issue at all. Your site will be graded for usefulness to people searching for elder law attorneys.

Each video on RU-vid is judged on how well it retains viewers and elicits viewer engagement, on top of the obvious things like keywords in the video title and spoken content. The best way to think about RU-vid videos is each one is going to stand on its own merit. So you could realistically have several videos that discuss the same topic, but all of them, or some of them, can do well. RU-vid's algorithm will push the videos that do best, and contribute to viewers staying on RU-vid longer. I would say creating as many videos as possible on a general topic is okay, and if you need to create an updated video on a specific keyword phrase, it won't hurt if you had similar videos in the past. Above all, DO NOT delete videos unless there's a very good reason. Deleting videos will reduce your total watch time and hurt your channel.

I think SEO is not only about tools and site speed, core web vitals... SEO is about connecting humans with humans it's about understanding content creation first. If you master and understand that, you'll crush it, without fancy paid tools.

If you change your domain, that's a brand new site. If you redesign your existing website with the same domain name, then Google will re-evaluate it--both the content and how users react to it. If you change your hosting, it can have some effect, if you have had slow hosting and you move to fast hosting, that can help a little. Moving from fast hosting to poor hosting can hurt a little too.
@LockedownSEO now almost a year after the Helpful Content update, i've seen Google Search appearances on desktop and mobile have decreased significantly, but "interactions" stayed the same for the most part. For context, i looked at Google Search and Google Maps traffic on Desktop and Mobile across multiple restaurants and retail stores, and searches dropped, but interactions stayed the same. Thoughts on why that might be?
I'm going to presume when you say "appearances" you mean impressions, and by "interactions" you mean visits or sessions. I'd need more information to know what you're really asking here, but it sounds like you are saying, in general that the sites you are observing have more pages per session? You'd have to clarify exactly if you're looking at an SEO tool (not actual data) or Search Console/Google Analytics (actual data).
Do a pop-up--this is the one time you should use a pop-up, for age verrification. Otherwise it can mess with your SEO. If you are on Squarespace, you can buy a plugin from a third-party developer that will work to make sure the main page content and pop-up are on the same page.

Hi Andrew, it might be a big in Chrome, but I suspect that it is most likely something to do with a big in your phone with Chrome. I couldn't replicate this bug.
Hey John. I recreated an html website in WordPress and my search console currently shows 3,068 (404) Not found pages. I see that these pages are from the old html site. Some are easy enough to identify where to redirect but others I have no idea where they should be redirected. Is there any way to just delete these urls or is there a way to do a bulk redirect? I've got the same issue with excluded by no-index tag. Again, these items are from the old html site. Please HELP!
This warning seems to worry a lot of people lately. Just because the pages are Not Found (404) isn't reason to panic. It literally means they are pages that used to be there, they are in Googlebot's memory, but they aren't there anymore. You can 301 redirect the HTML pages, but that doesn't mean the Not Found warnings in GSC will disappear. Repeat: You can redirect the old pages, the 440 Not Found messages will likely still appear in GSC. You ~should~ redirect the old pages as best you can, because Googlebot will still try to crawl them occasionally, and there may possibly be some old links somewhere. But do not pay it attention in GSC if you see Page Not Found, but you know those pages are redirected. They still won't be "found". They may appear under "Pages with Redirect", but the warnings won't clear. This seems to be something that is happening in GSC in 2023/24 .
And no you can't delete URLs from Googlebot's memory. Just redirect them and ignore the warnings once you know everything is redirected. The Not Found warnings will still be there. It doesn't mean anything bad. Archive dot org may be useful for finding some of the old pages. Just redirect to where you think the best matches are.
Great helpful video. I got two questions if you get time please: 1. Is this change of address tool suitable also for moving not an entire site, but just a small batch of content from your primary site to a new domain? I want to do this, but I don't want to damage the other pages on my main site that aren't being redirected. 2. GSC tells me that both properties must be on the same Google account to do this, but I set them up separately on different accounts. How can we get around this? Can I just add the new domain also to my primary account temporarily just to get this done, without if affecting the standalone account the new domain it also set up on? Thanks
1. The tool is only for full domains. It tells Google the domain has moved from the old to the new. It is not for redirecting select pieces of content.If that's what you need to do, doing 301 redirects from the old URLs to the URLs on the new site is what you'd want to do. 2. Search Console needs you to have both domains in your account. Go into Settings on your GSC on the second account and go to Users and Permissions, and add your original GSC as a owner, then you should be able to do this Change of Website Address. Also, it's not going to hurt anything if your original account has permanent access to the new site in GSC.

It can help solve the issue IF you drastically reduced the amount of text content on the home page. 2 weeks is probably a short amount of time to make changes though. Googlebot has been crawling very slow for the last year and a half. It might take time for them to properly evaluate the user behavior on the redesigned home page.
@@LockedownSEO yes I notice that when doing link building it takes time for Googlebot to notice that, also do you find its good idea to make redirection for some pages exp :redirect my old page to my new page and like that will not lose my ranking by changing directly my old design content and structure and thanks a lot for your quick responses ❤️❤️
@@amirabouzianeerrahmani8614 If you replaced an old page with a new page, yes, you should 301 redirect that old page to the new one. Google will still need to evaluate the new page so it might take time to adjust, when it stabilizes in it's final general position.
@@jamesgregotski I searched your name on Google Images and I couldn't get his picture to show up, though I'm sure you saw it. Most likely, there might be a page somewhere that both of your names appear on, like a scraper page. It's unlikely you could get Google to disassociate these two images, though it does not appear that they appear together very often, as I could not make Mr. Browlee's image appear in a search for your name.

I think HTML is best, whenever you can use it. Google can understand that information much easier, and in many ways, it is more adaptable for different devices as well.

Whenever you change your site, if it’s already doing good, leave the content on the pages as intact as possible. Changing the layout and appearance is okay, but leave the words and number of images the same. Redesigning a site that is doing well always has some risk involved, though sometimes it is necessary to evolve.
