From a sustainability perspective, the sheer amount of resources that went into making these and the amount of waste electric appliances cause (not to mention that you KNOW most people aren’t following local electric disposal laws) really infuriates me. Don’t get me wrong, I think consumers need to play a part in reducing consumption and being more sustainable-for example, following local guidelines for disposing your useless Car Thing. But properly recycling things takes hours in a lot of American cities and towns, and it feels like a slap in the face when you have to waste your one day off waiting in line at the recycling plant because Spotify decided to throw away hundreds of appliances because they weren’t feeling it. I use the headphones I bought four years ago instead of buying new ones to reduce consumption and waste, but that doesn’t matter if it’s near impossible to find a pair of headphones that will last that long. There’s only so much consumer awareness will do when companies will brick their own products in the name of the bottom line.
Also fun fact, back in the day directtv did have a remote you could purchase in stores (this was before the days that you could just connect your phone) and it was expensive (I wanna say it was like $60 or 70) but that thing was worth it, it was the only remote until that phone thing I mentioned that I ever found that would work under the blanket or even from other rooms
Spotify: People can use this in their car! That way they avoid Sirius and radio stuff. People: So I use this in my house because it’s got a big screen and I can use it for Spotify at home.
Crude oil joke and Spotify being the middlean line are absolute gold. Your overall delivery, pacing, and writing are also all fantastic, keep up the work bro
Thank god i found this video because i got to talk to support and say “pls dont make it non-operational!!!” And she said she’ll get it to the right people - LOVE THE SUPPORT TEAM!!! And because i have had a family plan, they might actually give me a refund 😎
it's all because spotify is actually worth barely anything, despite their success/market dominance/billions in revenue, for a number of reasons this year was actually the first year the company was actually profitable since its founding, and i think trying to brick the car thing may have come from an out of touch executive trying to cut all "excess" spending thinking customers wouldn't care
I still use the personalized radio frequency thing in my car (the exact one you showed, actually), and it works better, faster and more reliably than any car I've ever been in with built in bluetooth. Everyone else in my family has bluetooth in their car and the controls are laggy and unresponsive, the initial connecting is a pain, pairing to the car always involves pressing something in both the car and phone, they have issues staying connected and want access to your calls, messages and contacts. My little radio thing just connects when I start the car and plays music/handles calls with no issues.
"Surely it can't cost that much to maintain the service!" Well, considering Spotify has been actively losing money for years (they don't actually turn a profit, ever) and is desperately trying to make money by gating every feature behind premium, it probably costs them enough for them to see it as completely useless
I love how you casually reference Jenny's recent 4+ video as if it's a popular movie that we've all seen. Because yes, I absolutely know what you're talking about, since I've already watched it several times.
I don’t even know what’s the point of the smart player, You can just use your phone, there’s some great phone mounts, I personally love the one that’s able to be put in the cupholder , Mine cost about $15 when I went to get at Walmart.
This is just what every product is now. You don't own anything you buy. You buy the privilege of using it for however long the company decides to let you before arbitrarily cutting off service. These companies should not be ALLOWED to do this. If you launch a product or service which requires the company to verify it, run servers or do anything to keep it operational there should be a law that says you have to offer that service in perpetuity or for at least ten years, at the end of which time you must make the tools to operate it from the client side publicly available for free.
Since the Car Thing came out I've used it everytime I drive. I love it and I'm pissed as fuck they're discontinuing it. Granted I only paid 8 bucks for it, but it came out when I was thinking about getting an aftermarket carplay screen so it was a no brainer. I continued using Spotify because of the car thing.
most people making videos about the car thing do not own a car thing so they are not privy to a very funny thing that happened very early on. I got my "throw your car thing away" email and then the next day I got an email saying "Regarding the Car Thing". The email just said "yeah we know you guys are upset, we're still doing it no refunds"
You can't even mail it back they literally just tell you "throw it away" I'm dying laughing! Worst part is as a heavy music listener I like the computer pairing they figured out.
