50 years ago, my father took my brother and I, and a dozen of his employees to a fish camp on Lake Mistassini in Quebec Canada. The guides were all Cree Indians. Two things about this camp I found very unique. First one, the generator was buried deep in the ground. Unless you listened for it, you couldn't hear it. The second amazing things I was show was the ice house. Built into the side of a hill, buried in 4-5ft. of earth was a structure looked like a short Quasit hut. It was very deep from front to back. Stacked inside were hundreds of ice blocks cut from the river at the base of the camp. Tons and tons of saw dust covered the ice blocks from floor to ceiling. We were there in early July and I bet is was 40 degrees in there. On the front of the ice house a very large and thick log door that sealed like a vault. This was pretty large camp. I'm sure they stored fresh veggies, fruits, milk, and large amounts cryovac packed meats. Buy beef in large bulk would save the owners big bucks. However, you need to staff trained butchers to cut the meat properly and not waste any money. The experience was but amazing. We caught so many fish. All of the meals, even the shore lunches very amazing. The guides, their children, their wives, were all very friendly. Love the place. I am kind of shocked that a bear, racoons, squirrel's, something has not tore into that bag of dog food. It is so sad to see the place in this condition, but it is more concerning to me to see how those batteries, fuel tanks, gas cans and other environmentally hazardous items are just left abandoned. From the looks of the place I am pretty sure that not all of those fuel tanks and cans were probably not totally drained, and given time those batteries will eventually leak. Maybe its just me but I think it is disgusting that the owner is allowed to let the property be in such condition from a trash standpoint, the buildings falling apart is one thing but the literal trash laying everywhere that wind and time will eventually move out into the environment beyond the camp is just wrong, do they have a permit for a dump on that property?
What lake is this and what will be the name of the camp when you are ready to open, definitely would consider a trip here before my wife and I get too old, we do take a flyin trip every other year to the very northwest part of Ontario. Do you have a web site already? What time do you think you will be ready for opening for fishing?
You two have done the first thing right taking this endevor on at a young age. My husband and I started 25 years late. One getting Married after us both having two failed marriage. Known each other as friends over the years , realized we were reading out the same book just needed to read it together. Life too short lost him to cancer on my own now trying to finish the dream.
beautiful lake, not sure what would cost more though, clearing the land or restoring it.. probably why it's still abandoned today bc somebody must own the land. absolutely gorgeous lake though, would make a beautiful spot for a time share for outdoorsmen who like to hunt and fish. would definitely need some new accommodations though
Got one....yep put some gas treatment in starter fluid started right up after sitting for a year. The knocking valve self cleaned oil jet stopped knocking.
It'd be awesome to see a survival show here. As if you stumbled upon this when you were lost. There are so many useful supplies. Great video though I really enjoyed it
Looking good! One suggestion is to make sure those spark plug wires stay away from those exhaust manifolds. I had an old Dodge and that was an ongoing problem at first…
Found your posting about the Twomey camp and wondered why the camp was abandoned…great seeing your progress from that beginning. Will be looking forward to seeing these camps and adventures in future, particularly the winter adventures…great work keep it up.
This a cool series. You do great work and you are thoughtful in your design decisions. The little details really speak to how much you care about your client’s experience. Give me a year; I am bringing my family up for a trip.
The problem with this one is it was only accessible by fly in or boat. This would have ended its life a little sooner than many others that had road access.. BUT the number one reason is hunting and fishing is dying off where the big population areas are. For people that live in the Near North like Parry Sound or Huntsville and up it is still a real way of life and entertainment. The Toronto International Sportsman Show was a 10 day show for almost 40 years. (First show was in 1948) . Now it is a 3 day show. The youth in the cities don’t leave the house or put down their video games. A horrible reality to where we have gone.

season that wood stove like a cast iron skillet. take it outside , wire brush it pretty clean, hose it off, let it dry, fire it up, rub it with vegetable oil or salt free animal fat
