This is an F key xiao 箫, but the chart on the right of the image is for a G xiao. All holes closed on an key of F xiao, according to the chart in your book, is a 6, not a 5. Please correct my understanding if necessary, I am a complete beginner...
Hello, I have no problem playing it but I have a problem understanding how did you simplify the registers? 5.,6. no problem, but then on original register which is on your Google drive as well there is diffrent fingering for 7 and also it doesn't shw the N2 hole covered most of the times. Also when I play 7. according to the simplified version you provided my tuner doesn't show F note but G flat. Could you please help me understand why the changes were made like that for the simple version?
Thanks a lot for sharing this lessons with us! I own xiao only couple of weeks and I'm really happy, that I found your channel. It helps a lot. Thank you!
Yes. The print and electronic version on available through Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B0BN21JHJ9 Though the electronic version is best read on a computer or a tablet.
Thank you for your wonderful and helpfull turturials🙏 Something else you could perhaps point out would be what you should pay attention to when buying. Also how much should you invest to get an instrument that is easy to play and sounds good? It would be nice if you also added a few links to dealers here
I do go into this here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MCBO2CfiLmk.html As for recommended xiao, I personally fill orders with good quality xiao. There are demonstration videos on my Discord Channel "The Ways of Wudang." Putting new demos up today!
Your explainations are very good and helpful. Thank you. I got a question: I have a Xiao in G and for example try also to do some popular western pieces. Often I need sharp notes, but don´t know how to produce them. Is it possible to play on the G Xiao for example a "c#" means "c sharp"? When yes, how? Covering a hole maybe just by half? Thank you
There are special fingerings which do sometimes require half covering holes. There is a chart for reference on my website www.waysofwudang.com/how-to-read-jian-pu
For me your the best teacher!❤ I have this flute for more then 5 years and i don't know how to play...and now I have the best teacher... thank you so much friend for sharing🙏🏼👍🏼👋❤❤❤❤❤❤
I fell in love with the sound of the Shakuhachi. After searching around, I found that those are a bit expensive for me at the moment. I am thinking of starting something beginner level. After searching around, I see the Xiao has a similar sound, and could get something under $100 to begin with. I'm subscribing to your channel for once I buy it. I also love that you give these lessons. Do you think It is ok starting with Xiao and then perhaps moving to Shakuhachi later? I might stay with Xiao in the end, but I don't know this at the moment, since I've never played them.
Thank you so much for this introductory video! I have a quick question. Do you have tips for breathe control when practicing the Xiao? I think I’m doing something incorrectly because I get lightheaded when practicing. Thank you! :)
I talk about some details in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c24rzfXrOmY.html This is part of an updated series of tutorials for the xiao.
You can either do this with the lowest position, the pinky finger of the right hand, or with the index finger on the fourth hole. I find that re-articulating with the right hand index finger is easier and faster.

Thanks for the tutorial!I am new to the flutes using Xiao G Key and don't know why but my Do sounds verry different from yours 🥺 keep in mind that I am the verry verry beginning 😁
Pitch bending? ...Thank you so much for teaching brother. Is pitch bending done by rolling fingers off the holes? Can emboucher bend notes too? Are there other pitch bending techniques for the xiao? I ordered an 8 hole F...
Bending the pitch can be done with the embouchure unless you are just moving a single pitch like a movement in glissando. If you are just "bending" and raising or lowering a single pitch, this is done by a slow shift of the fingers. Bending the shape of the pitch to jump octaves or too add other effects is done with the mouth shape though.
respected, I bought a xiao flute but I just realized that it has 6 holes and not 8. I'm beginner. how do I learn notes for a 6 hole flute? I'm trying to find a tutorial, do you have any advice? I really like the sound of this flute, please give me some advice for a 6 hole xiao.
There are some resources out there. 6 holed xiao is the traditional and older way of playing. Most all xiao are crafted with 8 holes today and that is the standard for most performances. I personally have never played a 6 hole xiao.
thank you very much for your reply. unfortunately, the number of holes is apparently irrelevant because I can't even make a sound in it. I've been struggling for a week but no progress. For a moment, a wonderful sound is heard from it, but it immediately disappears.
excuse me. I bought a xiao in the key of E and the last two holes are completely at the back and so separated from the others that it is impossible to play. is it anatomically possible to play like that? is such a flute correct? I'm new to this so I'm asking, I don't know what to do with such a flute and I'm very sad.
The bottom holes on the back of the flute are sound holes. They do not need to be covered. They are often in pairs with 2-6 total holes depending on the flute.
Hello, I just got my Xiao and it is a little below the standard tuning. Can you tell me if it is a matter of technique or a tuning problem, if so is there a way to fix it? The Xiao is in tune with itself but all the notes are a little low. Thanks.
It is hard to say. It could be either. If it is an introductory xiao, it may just be the quality of the xiao but there is also a bit of variance in the technique that may cause this. For example, if your angle is too low or if the lip placement incorrect, the pitch could be flat.
Finally! I've been looking for days for a good explanation of how to read this music. Every video and website I found left out half of the details you included. Thank you. I've never read music of any kind before so I need something for absolutely beginners for this kind of sheet music. Everything else I've found seems to assume the person already knows how to read regular western sheet music.
I am very glad that it was helpful. It is a simple enough system once you get the hang of it but I understand how difficult it is to get started. I also don't read staff notation and people tend to use the same jargon without making introductory level information available.
Im just amazed at how smoothly you switch between low and high notes and the sound comes out so clean as well. I find it very hard to maintain the sound of the high notes maybe because im not covering the holes properly or bad blowing technique 😅.
@@WuDaoMusic There is an effect called “side-chain” in many DAWs (digital audio workstations). You can use it to lower the volume of an audio track while there are sounds coming from another audio track (e.g. to avoid a muddy sound). The sound of the waterfall is rather loud as long as you aren’t playing but as soon as you play it becomes quieter. This reminds me of the side-chain effect.
